i'm no gun nut, so is there any way someone can shoot themselves without ending up with traces on his hands?
I'm not a scientist™, but It seems extremely unlikely to me. I never bring white/nice clothes to the range because powder residue can cause tiny burns and stains, and I generally use a .22lr competition pistol, which doesn't have a big muzzle flash nor anything like that.
Edit: It looks like he was shot with a Bersa Thunder 22.
I don't think it's possible such a small pistol wouldn't leave traces of gun powder on his hands, specially if fired at point blank.
