ARMS |OT| (’-‘)-------------

Spectator mode already, didn't expect that.... Awesome. 🙃

Wait so how does this work? It's called Arena mode and you have to fight and then watch other people's fights?

I can't just... spectate stuff generally?

So I accidentally did a No Continue run of GP7 with Byte & Barq and got my first Perfect on Hedlok.

Yeah, double Dragons makes getting single player done a lot easier.

Trying out the spectator mode.

It's not perfect but I'm glad we have it now.

It's great for setting up tourneys and streaming it, that's the important feature being available now.

Would be nice to have 10 ppl in lobby and have 2 ppl play 1vs1 with 8 ppl spectate, but this is likely due to 4 player in a match limitation.

Just got a handful of friend requests from you guys. Awesome.

Psst a great GAF community is quietly forming here

Spam lasers continously so nobody can move or react? Lol

Nah, spamming will just make them block it. You want to basically play just outside their range so that they are forced to move forward, and that's when you throw a Dragon out to hit them from the side.

Hitting from the side is important, because it means it can bypass their own ARM defenses. It's how I perfected Hedlok even though he was trying to throw his own punches out.

And, obviously, you want the Dragons constantly charged because the fire knockdown helps a ton.

Wish I could join you guys, but the lag would be unbearable. I'm stuck fighting against Japanese players and they're just not giving me the challenge I need.

A good way to host GAF lobbies is this: ideally someone who can stream and is willing to can host/start the match, and we can form queues here/discord for the other 3 to rotate in, or do winner fights, or whatever. Could just have a list from top to bottom and start over when get to the bottom. Everyone will be able to watch streams now so actually being in the lobby for spectator mode is cool but in the interest of forming bigger GAF lobbies not that necessary.

This format also obviously lends itself easily to tournaments when we want to get into all that jazz.

I should get into more ARMSGAF lobbies once I make it to the point I'm actually playing the game more consistently, even if it does probably mean getting double-perfected in every game. So far I've just been tooling around with stuff and the occasional party match things with some of my fellow SplatGAF folks who also have the game.
I'm feeling semi-motivated to learn more B&B. Their play can be fun but man, when people know how to approach it and knock Barq out consistently it's like why even bother, lol.

He can be a force in V-ball, at least. Easiest way to harass from over the net!

Shout out to the post a couple pages back (I think it was Magala's) that talked about just sitting through versus matches practicing the basics. Not only have I actually gotten pretty good with Spring Man, but I'm also consistently pulling off my parries.

I've started doing this as well (Spring Man with Toaster/Buff/Bubb, just to get a grip on the minor differences that will inform glove choice later on, against random opponents/stages on level 5). It pays off quickly in getting you to focus on movement, reading, rush timing, the works.

One other note about Spring Man—when his perma-charge ability activates on your last bar of health, the short-hop works wonders for keeping nearly full uptime on your charge.

wait, why do you need it? Doesn't the short hop charge have no effect during that permacharge?

Just got this game and am kinda amazed at how bad I am lol, could only beat Grand Prix on level 2. Fighting with computers is a lot more fun in this than in most fighting games, though, which is nice. I could see myself getting better.

Having a lot of trouble getting mentally around the traditional controls, though, just because I feel like I should be able to move my arms without moving my character but obviously can't, so I have trouble aiming and moving interchangeably in that scheme. Not sure how to rectify this, or even if I should? Motion controls give more options, right?

Just tested it in training against the Min Min punching stage to be sure: I let her take my Spring Man down to 25%, then did a short hop, then just strafed back and forth to see if the charge would stick. It does. Short hop gives you the perma-charge.

To clarify, if you're already charged, the short hop obviously has no effect. But if you go down to 25% without your charge up, the short hop will get you charged.

Wait, I think I get you- the charge doesn't automatically activate when you cross the 25% threshold. You actiavte it, then it sticks.

I've literally spent the least time with Spring Man of any of them. Going through GP4 with him now, double toasters all the way across the sky.

I wouldn't say more options; neither control scheme gives you a distinct outright advantage in my opinion, though motion has a steeper learning curve. Check out the first question in this post if you like: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=241267668&postcount=3801

Actually, testing this further, I'm not completely sure about this either. I thought Spring Man had to activate his charge to get it started, but looking at it again I may be wrong—there's just a bit of a delay when it powers up.

Not sure why I thought all this time that Spring Man (and Max Brass) had to initiate the charge in order to keep it. It was probably because the matches were always fast-paced enough that neither character had enough time to just stand around and charge automatically with a one-second delay after the recovery.

Ooh, nice post, thanks for the link! I wasn't aware that wide grabs could be done on traditional controls - that's good to know if I decide to go back and try to focus on them. I might just stick with motion, though... if I can iron out accidentally throwing two quick punches instead of grabbing and figuring out how to consistently throw the Chakrams in the right directions, they might work just fine.

This game frustrates me like no other. The worst possible opponent for me is someone who just throws straight punches. I just cant deal with that. A constant stream of incoming straight punches. The equivalent of a button masher you could say, no understanding of the game whatsoever.

As someone who plays in handheld mode only, I never block. Refuse to use that fckn "button". So what do I do? Have been dangerously close to split the thing in half over my knee several times.

i tried motion controls for a hot second during the test punch immediately went for the traditional controls and never looked back. Now that I've gotten to rank 7-8 currently, I'm finding traditional controls are starting to lack. Especially when it comes to curving both arms in different directions at the same time. So I started on low difficulty GP and started working my way up. Im not super good with them, but I can see their value.

One good exercise I've found with the double-glove setup (that is, the Toaster/Buff/etc. glove class): run the training stages, particularly the Ninjara anti-grab stage and the Twintelle anti-counter stage, but keep your finger off the jump button at all times, weaving in and out with the dash alone. I know I have a bad habit of spending far too much time in the air, especially with characters whose movement abilities are aerial (Ribbon, Mechanica, Twintelle), and from what I've seen online, I'm not the only one to make this mistake. It's a good idea to just force yourself to stay on the ground with basic gloves and work entirely on a rhythm of punches and sidesteps.

Play the Min Min training stage (it's just constant incoming punches, although they're slow and wide, since she uses the Megawatt here exclusively). Learn to sidestep and poke.

The main thing you have to worry about in a live match that the training stage won't teach you is that many of these opponents are spamming punches not only to zone you out, but to build their rush faster than you build yours. You'll need to learn how to block at some point to deal with that, in order to have a full range of options for defending against all kinds of rushes.

Get a curved arm and go around them, ram ram slapamanders or boomerangs. Or get a heavy arm and push through them. Megaton, whammer, parasol.

Also, side dash.

Spend less on candles Use the block button.

Dodge or use Twintelle's aura

So after playing online with GAF for quite a couple of nights, and having noticable lag, I played locally with my brother - each on our own Switches. I don't know if it was because he was docked and therefore the Switches were a bit apart, but there was a lot of lag, maybe even moreso than there usually is online :/

Just faced a Min Min online that was very good at abusing the dragon arm, dragon Popper was very hard for me to face... Too fast for parasol, too long range for Seekie, and double Cracker put me at disadvantage due to dragon arm.

I finally managed to get to +4 in Party Mode and actually maintain it for a bit. Some notes:

-I somehow won a 3-for-all. My opponents just ignored me for some reason even though I only had 25% health. I then won a 1-on-1 fight without getting hit.
-Spring Man gets powered up in the pre-game screen because his health is already at 25%, so you see a close-up of each character and Spring Man is just glowing lol.
-Winning twice does not give you a +5 handicap (I don't even know what that would be), but losing after doing so will still have you remain at +4.
-You only get 4 extra coins for winning... wait, so that's what +2/+3/+4 are supposed to mean. O_O

So yeah, Party Mode is alright if you are pretty good at the game when it comes to racking up coins. Most of the players you fight against are pretty bad so it's easy pickings, really.

Finaly got some confidence and beat GP lv. 4, there's a hard match up but overall it just feels normal

time to hop in party / ranked match later

Edit: I'm using Twintelle, her abilty to float + slow down time + charging is OP

I haven't it up yet, but I thought it was kinda interesting that, even with that short of a distance and being on the same network, the game still had quite a bit of lag. Maybe it's the netcode, maybe it's just my Switch, who knows

Played this at a friend's house for a few hours yesterday. Really fun multiplayer game, I'd not really paid attention to it before now.

I want a Switch now...
