Given the way things went between Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz and the network that canceled his beloved comedy, the following news may come as a bit of a shock--but that's Hollywood for ya.

Fox has ordered a "table read" for Hurwitz's next project, Sit Down, Shut Up, says The Hollywood Reporter. The potential show is an adaptation of the Australian comedy of the same name that aired earlier this decade, but Hurwitz's version would be animated.

Sit Down, Shut Up is about seven people who work at a high school. The group all has other aspirations and desires, leaving the education of the students a nonpriority. If Fox likes the table read--which is a potential cast simply reading lines from a script--the network will order the project straight to series. There have been no announcements on potential cast members.

Fox canceled Arrested Development, Hurwitz's critically praised comedy starring Jason Bateman, in 2006 after a three-year run. The show built a strong following and won six Emmys, but never impressed in the ratings.

Hurwitz has gone abroad for inspiration before. In 2006, he tried to import the British sitcom The Thick of It. The show never made it past its pilot episode.

kinda interested, Lets hope this wont end with the famous words: "i've made a huge mistake" :lol

Did he not learn his lesson? He's pitching it to the WRONG network. Comedy Central, at this rate, would be a much better choice. Or NBC. Hell, anyone else.

Fox kept the show going for three seasons, despite terrible ratings. I think you need to blame your friends and neighbors for ADs cancellation.

No one really knew about the show... when it was airing. The reason was poor advertising and changing showtimes...

It was fox's fault.

Its first season was advertised to hell. The show's just not very accessible to the average person.

I love the show now, but when it was on, I wouldn't watch it for anything. I'd run for the remote after family guy ended, and I don't really know why

I've never seen this Arrested Development.

I hear it's good.
Better get on it. Some of the funniest stuff ever. Make sure you get the DVDs for the bonus features. It's well worth your money.

I bet right now there's some alternate reality where Dancing with the Stars gets the worst ratings on TV while Arrested Development is in it's 5th season with continuing critical acclaim and 50 million viewers on average every week. Don't you guys wish you lived there?

:(

Interesting. He seems intent on adapting his next tv show from an existing work.

Whatever. He's earned a lifetime pass for creating AD so hopefully it will get picked up although I really see him at a network like HBO, Showtime, or FX rather than the traditional networks.

On a borderline related note, I'm still pissed the Thick of It pilot never leaked. Christopher Fucking Guest directed it. It had to be gold.

You're missing nothing. OT's equivalent to Gaming-side overhype.
You can't be serious. I can understand you not liking it, but you should at least appreciate it for what it is.

It's a great show, dude.

You have to discount bjork on this one. GAF often does obsessively group think around shows, movies, and politicians but this is one of the rare cases of them getting it completely right. One of the best, if not the best sitcom of all time.

WTF.

Why is he making the same mistake again? Go with any other network. FOX is the devil.
FOX is the only major network that has a record of greenlighting animated projects, and overall FOX will support anything, from anyone. There is a reason why "interesting" stuff like
Firefly
OC
24
Futurama

and other projects that are not the norm started on Fox.

No one knew about it, even though the number of people pirating it rival Lost. I don't think so.

I've watched probably half of the entire series, and it's just... there. But people are like OH MAN HE IS DRIVING THAT TRUCK THING WITH THE STAIRS LOLS OH MAN BLUE MAN GROUP etc.

yawn guys, seriously. There's a reason why that shit got canned.

I'm one of the few who actually watched it starting from day one, and hate all the new fans after it ended.

All that layered shit is extra. I think its a phenomenal sitcom even without that. The inside and deeper layered jokes are only what take it from good to absolutely brilliant.

Different strokes, I guess. No biggie. :p

To each his own, I guess. Like Stoney said, that stuff didn't really make the show. It was the hillarious undertones the show had. It's not you're average comedy, and not everyone will like it, but you should at least appreciate it.

To use an analogy AD is like The Wire but for comedy. It raises the bar so far that you can't ever quite enjoy regular sitcoms the same way you did before. It always feels like something is missing...

The show ranges from pure slapstick physical comedy to stuff you actually feel smart for laughing at. Very few comedies if any have that range.

Examples of regular sitcoms?

Why is The Wire supposedly so good? I haven't seen any episodes but it looks like a standard cop drama to me....why should I watch it?

Pretty much all of them although of course there are other sitcoms I like very much such as 30 rock, Curb, Sunny in Philadelphia.

What AD does though which very few do with that deeper layer is provide almost infinite re-watchability.

It's the closest thing to a plotted novel you will find on television. It's about the furthest possible from a standard cop drama is all I can say. Watch 1 season of it and if you don't agree, I'll eat my kangol hat I constantly wear.

You better.

BTW, I took your recommendation in the Hulu thread. I'm watching Journeyman for the first time right now. I can't believe I missed out on this show. I'm interested in seeing how they handle alternate time lines, and altering the space time continuum.
