Arthur Gies Leaves IGN

That's the thing, where would you leave IGN for?
Especially if you've been working your way up and getting respected an audience.

Still Games Press and in the area?

Well, what games press is in San Fran? I know Giant Bomb is, is GameSpot?

I don't even know anymore who are on IGN anymore. Or at 1up. Or at Gamespot. Well at least I sort of know who are doing Giant Bomb.

I stopped caring about individual game writers(GB aside) the day The 1UP Show died.

This hardly even matters. IGN will continue to suck, I'll read Arthur's opinions elsewhere.

What really matters is: Will Rebel FM continue?

Haha. A touch harsh, but kinda true.
Not to get sidetracked, but I honestly wonder what the Tested guys do. Wesley Fenlon isn't employed by Whiskey Media, right? He's the only one posting content. Seems like a nice, lax place to work. Create a video once a week, get paid.

He won't go to GiantBomb. First of all, I think GB is quite happy with the staff they have (and they've said that fairly clearly), and secondly, has he ever had any connection to the GB crew?

I find it somewhat amusing that any time a gaming journalist leaves a company or a site someone says "What if they go to GiantBomb?"
Giant Bomb is a shelter for battered games journalists.

Oh cool, it's not true because you said it is.

lol, I am suppose to take you seriously? Some troglodyte on NeoGAF thinks so n so doesn't work at their job.

EDIT: Maybe you can PM monsterdunk or something. (He should be free, right?)

Mr. Gies is a sexual force to be reckoned with. Hoping RebelFM won't be impacted by whatever he's doing -- the stable cast of four they have now are awesome to listen to.

Name calling? How very mature of you. I think you have a subscription to renew somewhere. Sorry if I feel bad that some journalists work their ass off and others don't while getting paid not to, but this topic isn't about your idol in life. It's about a journalist who actually puts out reviews and editorials.

Didn't this guy only get popular because he was on a podcast when 1up collapsed? Talk about riding the wave.

I'm not saying he's a bad guy, I had just never heard of him until I think the night 1up collapsed and he was on RebelFM with the actual former employees.

Someone there has to actually do real work and write more than 1 review per month other than Brad.
If you go to Giant Bomb for reviews, you are missing the point of Giant Bomb.

The core of Giant Bomb is their video and podcast discussion content, which I find way more useful for making decisions about games than any review.

I'd like him at GB, but professionally, I think that would be a step down.
Professionally it would be a step up but arthur is one of the worst personalities in podcasts so I hope he stays far away from giant bomb, I can barely stand him on rebel fm.

He is on RebelFM.

In this case, it is possible. He says he's not leaving the area, and he's staying in the games press. He says he's leaving for "an opportunity too good to pass up," and for Arthur the first thing I think of is Giant Bomb, as he has constantly talked about that site and his creepy stalker tendencies towards Gerstmann. Moreover, this is happening right before the big games rush season; if Giant Bomb were to want to hire a new editor, it would make total sense for them to make the move now so that they could alleviate the pains of the mass-reviewing season. Lastly, as much as I dislike Arthur, he is incredibly well-informed, and would probably be a real good fit for Giant Bomb, as he gets along with the guys there fairly well, it seems.

However, I don't think they should make a move like that before their annual subscriber-push, which hasn't happened yet. Doesn't make sense to me to hire another body when you don't have any idea what your financials are going to look like yet. Also, they just hired Klepek a few months ago, and Navarro sort of works for Giant Bomb too these days, so the timing doesn't quite add up.

So, maybe he's doing something with Hilary Goldstein now that he's left IGN? Maybe a new startup? Or it could just be as simple as a little bit higher position than what he had at IGN over at Gamespot.

What other gaming "press" (magazines too) exist in the SF area?

You're kinda wrong...on both counts, but okay.

Didn't he JUST move out of the apartment with Anthony to somewhere else in SF? You gotta figure he's gonna stay local if he signed a lease. So the question is where is he going?

I don't get the Giant Bomb talk, though I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to it.

Game studios in SF local other than Double Fine that you guys can think of?

His article says he is staying in San Fran, and working in games journalism still, so not a developer.

Giantbomb would sort of make sense, but it'd be a weird fit. Those guys are all jokers, and Gies seems more of the pretentious (not in a negative way) type. I see Gies fitting in more with Kill Screen or Edge than Giantbomb.

Hah, I can guarantee you Will and Norm work harder than I do. Naturally they're filming/testing stuff ahead of when it goes live on the site.

Pretentious is a pejorative.

It's been a while since someone took a community manager job, so I'm banking on that.
Still in the games press.

Also, and I should preface this with saying I love Arthur and value his opinions and the work he does, he doesn't really have the personality for a community manager.

Pretentiousness is always a negative, like "stupid". Maybe you mean serious?

He is on RebelFM.
RebelFM is called that because it was an offshoot of fired members of 1UPFM. Gies was a friend/roommate of Gallegos and essentially got a free ticket into the spot light.
