As a gamer, what is something that non gamers say/do that gets under your skin?

"aren't you too old for video games?"
"Gaming is for kids."
"You've grown and you still play games like a kid."

You can also sometimes see some friends who are not avid gamers as yourself seeing you as immature because you play video games.
Yeah, my whole family feels that gaming is a waste of time at best.
"You're wasting your life playing these games"
I just... what?
Yeah, that's the quote I was looking for

"I wish I had time for video games"

Seriously, its so insulting. There's a final bosman on it. So condescending to my hobby.

This is the major one. Sorry that I don't drink every night, smoke 2 packs a day, watch porn on a regular basis, and watch sports/sitcoms every day/night. You know, all the acceptable ways to waste time.

Not like I'm a married, educated man that spends more time on his education, family, and health than most of those who make that comment do.

And as for all the LoL, DOTA, CoD, mobile game players aren't gamers/playing games comments that I'm seeing here and/or expect to see at some point: really? As much as people who don't play games making ignorant comments/statements annoys me, a see much more insulting shit here considering there is a bit of an expectation that people who actively play games and claim to love them would know better than that.

Shit, I don't even play MOBAs or COD and it gets under my skin...sorry, this is supposed to be a thread about people who don't play games.

Parents, girlfriends and non-gaming friends have all used this one on me before while in a car when somebody crosses the road and we have to stop for them: "you want me to hit the ped? 100 POINTS HAHAHAAA"

You know, thinking that you gain points in all video games.

My boss regularly calls us "geeks" when we talk about constructing things in Minecraft.

The joke of it is his kids are probably playing it more than we do.

Here was the big whopper that I got hit with a lot by my dad when I was growing up, in middle/high school.

"You know if you put even a tenth of the effort you put into videogames into studying, you'd be on the honor roll!"

Thanks Dad. Thanks for that.

Ugh, it pisses me off to no end when non-gamers makes fun of adult gamers. My mother and I stayed at my grandparents' house for a week during the holidays. My grandparents (and my mom, too) would sit in front of the TV for hours watching intellectually stimulating programming such as Maury, The Wendy Williams Show, The Steve Wilkos Show, and the myriad court TV shows that air throughout the day. At some point, the subject of adult gamers comes up (because two of my uncles are men in their 30s who still play games), and they immediately start making fun of them and claiming they're wasting their lives and going on about how pathetic the hobby is (and just for the record, my gamer-uncles are two successful, socially well-adjusted guys). Don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna sit here and say that video games are inherently more valuable and meaningful than the trash TV that they spend hours watching (let's be honest - most are just mindless entertainment), and I hate to be so judgmental towards the way my family members use their free time, but the sheer hypocrisy is just so infuriating.

"I dont play videogames, but this new generic game in a old and boring franchise is obviously the best game ever made in the history of mankind and nothing will ever top it"

This makes me mad as well. There are so many different scoring systems!

He: You're a gamer? So you play like 20 hours a week right?
Me: Ehm no, i study / work a lot and have almost no time to play but it's a hobby yeah.
He: Huh? Don't you need to play like everday.

I've met many people like this who think you can't play unless you play like a madman and imply anyone who plays games has no life.

Well, depends on how much time you were spending and how you naturally perform in school.

Just reading this as it is could make your dad somewhat in the right, even though it does match the thread criteria of it getting under your skin.

Calling me a "gamer".

I came here to say this.

I personally can't stand it. In the past, I've put in my twitter description that I'm a gamer, but after reading it out loud, it just made me feel like a giant dork. It just feels embarrassing to tell people, "Yeah, I'm a gamer.".

I don't understand people being embarassed about being "a gamer". Would you be embarassed calling yourself a "reader"? Or a "golfer"?

Meh, I may just be weird though... I tend to not care what people think about me and most people accept that pretty fast if they are my friend or relative... and if you're not either of those, why the hell would I care what you think of me or my hobbies?

When I'm on the internet or watching movies on my game console and people still think I'm playing games.

Game consoles these days have so much more use than just playing videogames now.

I just don't like the idea of labeling yourself after a hobby you enjoy. It just feels gross to me.

Oh my god this reminds me of when my mum was teaching me how to drive.

"Just remember you don't get points for hitting people in real life."

....like seriously?!

Having a parent buying their small child an M rated game say "They are all for kids anyways". Or something to insinuate that games are for children only.

"aren't you too old for video games?"
I'm in my early 30's.

I hate those old fashioned people who think games are for kids.

I hate this as well. I'm still in my early/mid-twenties and some people still think that video games are for elementary school kids.

I also hate when they say that video games causes violence and aggression.

Also this:

If the kid is mature enough, then it is fine allowing him to play mature rated games, but when the parents just blindly hands over a game that is rated mature and then blame the video game industry for their kids behaving a certain way is really unjust.

He is crying and clutching a game to his chest. I would hazard a guess that he isn't mature enough.
Whilst looking about 10 years old.

Nothing anyone who doesn't really know what he is talking about anyway could ever be so annoying as the PC Master Race bullshit you have to deal with here on GAF ;)

A friends Facebook post a couple days ago:

"I volunteer at my son's school on Wednesdays and read through each student's written weekend reports. It blows my mind how many of these kids write about nothing except video games. I always feel better about how [wife's name] and I are doing as parents after I leave."

This is a person who usually talks about NOTHING else except sports. I wanted to drive to his house and smack him.

Heh, I've done this myself while driving.
The points part. Not actually hitting someone.

Haha, yeah that's why I posted it cause you clearly can tell the kid isn't mature enough to play GTA V. This also how multiplayer games get ruined cause you have an annoying nine year old in there.

Pretty much any casual, thoughtless, negative remark from people that just don't understand video games:

* They're just time wasters
* Lazy people play them
* Too much violence (true in some cases, but you don't know what games I play!)

Come on, there's nothing like being called a ****ing **** **** **** by a 9-year-old when playing online.

"Wow you play video games? I never would have expected that!"

Thanks for the complement I guess? Way to generalize everyone who plays games as socially inept beings.

And like some of you have mentioned, it's like if you say you play games many people assume that's all you do and you just sit in your room all day playing Call of Duty.

The "Oh you play video games?" in a condescending tone.......and then 2 minutes later hear them talk about sitting down and watching 6 hours of (insert tv show here) marathon.

"You're wasting your life playing these games" always pisses me off. Because the same people who say that usually spend all their free time watching trashy reality tv on TLC.
How is that any different?

One of those is passive entertainment, that probably makes people dumber. And the other one is active entertainment, which can have psychological and physical benefits [1].

I hear stuff like this occasionally...

"Oh, I'm a gamer! I used to play [Mario Kart 64] all the time!"

Nevermind that game is almost 20 years old.

The age thing is a common one, that gets wheeled out from when you grow your first pube.

The other is the time aspect. I have time to play because I choose an interactive hobby over watching endless reality TV shows and soap operas. Easy. I even read, exercise and socialise. Must be miraculous.

I hate to bring it up and it probably has been mentioned before, but when people (mostly politics and newspaper guys) blame a game, if somebody killed someone.

They often don't care about the background of the person and just blame it solely on the games and that's really sad.

"It's just a game."

Do you want videogames to be taken seriously only when it suits you?

EDIT: Whoops thought this is what gamers say that gets under your skin. My bad.

It bugs me when people who do nothing but watch TV for 4 hours every night imply that I'm wasting my life by spending a lesser amount of time playing games.

Both of those are something no one who doesn't play games would say.

On that note, dudebro is another stupid, negative term that needs to go.

I don't think non gamers know what dudebro is either. Hell I had to explain it to my friend and he's been playing games forever.

Is this annoyance at being called a gamer new? I don't recall it being so prevalent but now I see it all the time on GAF. I don't see it any different than calling yourself a reader or a listener (in the case of music or radio or whatever).

Pertaining to the thread, my dad about a year ago (I'm just about 28):

"Don't you think you're a little old for Mario?" You know, because age has anything to do with enjoying a well designed game or any other type of medium.
