As a gamer, what is something that non gamers say/do that gets under your skin?

My Dad always used to ask "when are you going to grow out of playing games?" Why would I grow out of something that's fun? Do people grow out of watching TV or reading books?

"I wish I had time for video games"

Seriously, its so insulting. There's a final bosman on it. So condescending to my hobby.

Holy shit, this ... SO MUCH. I own a house, I do shit all day, full time job, kid ... I still find time to game. It's a hobby so I prioritize higher than watching shit TV (although I do watch some of that, too)

"aren't you too old for video games?"
I'm in my early 30's.

I hate those old fashioned people who think games are for kids.

My mom still says this. I'm 38.

It's usually gamers that get under my skin. Being all elitist about stupid stuff.

But this, this is the #1 thing. Non-gamers have stereotypical views and honestly, it's fine. We all have perceptions. It's when they don't change their view once you show them the contrary that bugs me ... but "hardcore gamers"? They constantly belittle and berate others. In just this thread we have people calling out "Farmville" or "LOL" or "Just COD/Halo" players ... They are still gamers! Just because they don't play others doesn't make them "non gamers".

It just doesn't make sense. It would be like calling out somebody who JUST owned an XB1 or something ... "Oh, you're not a fucking gamer, you ONLY have ONE system!"

I was hanging with my friend and notice she bought the game Mario Galaxy. I was like "oh cool, I didn't know you played this game" and she was like "yea I got it when it came out, I like that game, its really fun". So I decided to play her account, and she was only beat the first level.

Boy the disappointment in my face when I saw that.

I never really had a person that said anything bad about gaming in front of me. Everyone that I know either play games, or don't mind people playing games.

couldnt have said it better myself. played games all my life but now circulate on shooters and sports games because it's what i enjoy. doesnt make me any less of a "gamer"

Silly rabbit... games are for kids!!!... or something like that. Oh!!! and my mom used to get upset and said that "The Nintendo" is going to mess up the TV!!!

A lot of these are rehashes but nonetheless...

-People assuming that for every free waking minute of the day you must be playing games because "that's what you do" or some other kind of condescending rationale because obviously people who play games must not have lives right?

-Because you play games that must mean you play "insert big AAA title here"

-People thinking all games boil down to shooting and killing

-Being faced with a lot less criticism if you talk about playing sports games (madden, fifa, nba2k) cuz "lol sports right?"

-Although not as rage inducing as the others, it really bugs the hell out of me (especially pre-wii) when people flail the controller around when they're playing games. It's the worst in platformers and racers. People will typically physically lean their body and controller as they try to make a turn or make this kind of "jump-get-over-there" motion with their arms and controller when they're playing platforms. There is no bigger indication that said person does not play video games

That sense your being looked down on for "wasting time" playing games...usually said by people who watch 5 hours of TV and movies every day. Does my head in.

I have been called a "loser" and a "juvenile" for playing video games, which is ironic because not only i am much more successful than who said this to me, i live a much better life. People can be judgemental bastards, its not just video games, it can be anything. The best thing you can do is to ignore them and live and act the way you want to.

One of my cousins saw me playing Xbox and she said "gosh you're such a boy".

Kinda pissed me off. And it's not like she doesn't have a Nintendo Wii in her living room.

Not sure if this is related, but I actually strafe better in shooters if I sway my body a bit, lol.

My sister won't let my nephew play his 3DS with the 3D turned on. I was playing with him one day and I turned up the slider and he freaked out and yelled at me because he's not allowed. He told me that it would hurt my eyes and make me blind.

How great the graphics are in Call of Duty games.
My friend told me that he read that Battlefield 4 had the best graphics of any PS4 game, and it's still the only one he owns. He also paid $500 on Amazon, not knowing it was a 3rd party seller, and said that Amazon raised prices because of supply and demand. lol...

*This may come off a bit immature and angry--know that this isn't meant to offend anyone directly. You've been warned:*

To all the people who say "ignore it" to people who speak in a condenscending manner about gamers: NO.

Why should we? Why should we be treated as sub-humans because we like to do something? Why should we have to take that bullshit? It is a hobby/lifestyle we have chosen -- same as anyone else.

If I were to say something about someone's sexual orientation, WEW LAWD. You would NEVER hear the end of it. If I were to stereotype someone based on how they dress themselves and how it depicts class (sneakers, jeweler, short skirts, baggy pants, hairstyles like dreads and spiky hair) WEW LAWD!

No. FUCK. THAT. I tell people who try that bullshit with the gamer stereotypes some shit they can't even comprehend. It ends the conversation immediately. They never try to talk about video games anymore.

I demand we be respected like everyone else. Why no gamer's movements? Where is our parade?

I was slightly sarcastic about that last line. Slightly.

Where are you treated like a "sub-human" for playing games? and how?

I'm 6'6 and a former basketball player and they just assume I only play 2k when I haven't played one of those regularly since 2k 7. And only that was because it was a launch title for ps3. So it was that and resistance until Warhawk came out lol.

Nothing. I mean the usual stuff...not signalling, driving slow in the fast lane, taking too long to order food, bad body odor, loud kids, walking their untrained dogs off leash, but I'm sure there are plenty of gamers guilty of all the same things.

I dunno, but here are some things that annoy me:

- being called a "gamer"

- people who judge others because they don't like or play video games

We should call people who like to watch movies "Filmies" :p

Just the general ignorance between brands, Nintendo, Playstation, and Xbox are 3 different systems. "OMG I can't wait to play Mario Kart on my PS4!"

Um no...*SLAP*

-People assuming that for every free waking minute of the day you must be playing games because "that's what you do" or some other kind of condescending rationale because obviously people who play games must not have lives right?

This times a million, just because I buy games all the time doesn't mean I'm playing them all the time. You like to buy movies, I like to buy games, stfu and enjoy your shit and I'll enjoy mine you jerk.

Being called a "gamer", I don't like labels. But if I was given one it would probably be Rockabilly/Psychobilly/Punk. But I don't even like being called those.

Also "to get a life and go out to the bar or something". I hate people enough when they are sober, I don't really want to deal with them while they are drunk.

Why? It makes complete sense to me

It's something you do, not something you are.

You also, eat and breath and go to work and school and walk and run and drive and fish and fuck...do you really call yourself, or do others refer to you as, an eater, a breather, a worker, a student, a walker, a runner, a driver, a fisher, a fucker?! Why would you? Wouldn't you be bothered if, when introducing you, people said "this is CaptainGyro...he's a breather"? I mean, yeah, you breathe in oxygen, but if that's how your friends see you, maybe they don't know you very well. Maybe all of these things combined help define your personality, but none of these things individually can sum up a human being.

If you all know or care about is Call of Duty, don't feign interest.

Seems like a perfect opportunity to educate someone instead of being elitist about it.

Honestly, the only thing that bothers me about non-gamers is when they suggest gaming is a kids only activate.

If someone who doesn't know anything about gaming says something silly but shows genuine interest I will take that as an opportunity to educate them.

Yes I'd be bothered if somebody called me a breather...because it's completely superfluous and not even the same thing as calling someone a gamer. Everybody is a breather... so there's no point in being called a breather. Not everybody is a gamer. That was a horrible example. Would I be bothered if somebody called me a student? No, I wouldn't. Why should I be? I am a student. Being called a student doesn't mean it defines exactly what my personality is. It just means,,,, gasp... I am a student

Not mention half of his examples are "titles" given to people who do them. Runners, fishers, drivers, swimmers, students, smokers, drinkers. Bad examples where bad. Lol

"I wish I had time for video games"

Seriously, its so insulting. There's a final bosman on it. So condescending to my hobby.

Alright this is the only one I don't get. I love video games and playing them but I rarely have time to do so, so if friends ask why I don't play as much as I used to, this is what I say. It's no different than saying "I have no time to watch movies at the theatre" or "I have no time to work out". Gaming isn't exempt from falling to more important life matters, nothing entertainment-wise does.

It's not like they're trying to insult your life style. Fuck, gaming shouldn't even be considered a lifestyle, that's what a lot of people here are complaining about with labels and such. It's a hobby and activity that people do for fun and it's in no way offensive to say you don't have time for them.

That games are "easy to make" and all we do is "play games all day".

Yeah, I'll bet having to deal with the former is awful for you.

Video game likely take some of the longest hours of any medium to make, in part because they mix so many mediums together. A lot of hard, stressful work. Some of us appreciate it though. :)

I honestly can't think of much. #1 it takes a lot to get under my skin and #2 my friends and people that I'd talk to about games all play games. Really, post-high school I haven't really come across folk that are big into shaming people if their hobbies aren't "cool".
