An asexual woman has discussed her unlikely relationship with a “recovered porn and sex addict” on Channel 4's new digital series Love Against the Odds.
Alice, who identifies as asexual, revealed she’s been dating Harvey for five years and insisted that the pair aren’t “mismatched” despite her not being able to experience “sexual attraction”.
Speaking about their relationship, Alice began: “I identify as heteroromantic asexual. I don't experience any sexual attraction or desire.
“Being with me could mean that I won't ever be able to have sex. It means I fall in love like anyone else, but I don't experience any sexual attraction.”
But despite their obvious differences, Harvey insisted: "We're not mismatched - we're just different."
Harvey is a “recovered porn addict” who used to spend up to 20 hours a day “going to the gym, eating, gaming and masturbating.”
He explained: “I had a pornography addiction and a sex addiction. I think I'd become quite numb and desensitized to pornography.
“… I would have spent upwards of 20 hours a day either eating, going to the gym, and the rest of that time was spent gaming, masturbating...
“It was the intensity, the duration, the quantity of it [pornography] that I was doing that was not good for my mental health. And that's what a lot of my rehabilitation focused on.”
The couple, who are now engaged, met through a mutual friend at a party and instantly 'connected'.
Although Alice was upfront about identifying as asexual, Harvey confessed that he experienced a 'sinking feeling' when she first mentioned it and still struggles to understand how Alice feels.
He shared: “My understanding was sexless. I'm not going to pretend, even five years on, I even understand it.
“There's sex positive, sex neutral, sex repulsed. For Alice, she is generally sex neutral or sex repulsed.”
The couple revealed they do 'sometimes' have sex but Alice admitted she’s 'effectively faking it' which is difficult for Harvey to understand.
Alice said: “We have sex but maybe not as much as other people. When we are doing the deed, I am effectively faking it.
“He knows that, and that's difficult for him to get his head around.”
At one point, the couple had even considered experimenting with non-monogamy but said they 'knew that wasn't going to work'.
The pair are planning on walking up the aisle next year and no one is more surprised than Alice, who said: “I didn't think I'd ever get engaged, let alone to a recovering sex and porn addict.”
And marriage isn’t the only thing on the cards for the couple as Alice admitted that she hopes to become a mum one day.
“I've always wanted to have kids, I've always wanted to be a mother,” she shared. “I think that confuses a lot of people because there's a certain thing that has to happen to have kids.
“Harvey and I are so happy, so engaged, and getting married next year. My life has taken a turn for the better.”
