Asians to overtake Hispanics as largest US immigrant group over the next 50 years

i can relate and im brown, too

generally when people hear "asian" they think AZN

we brown bros need our own thing, not just "well technically i'm asian hrm hrmm"

Growing up in the SF Bay Area/California in the 80s and 90s, we all just considered ourselves asian - Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Malay, Thai, whatever...most people here had no issues with it. We never associated it with skin color or whether we looked the same, just that we're all from (or drew heritage from)...well, Asia.

Then again, there's a pretty long history of Asians/Asian-Americans on the US west coast, alongisde some pretty strong discrimination issues in the past regardless of whether you were light skinned or not, so it may also just be that a lot more people are used to it here.

Half white-half asian is the best combination. This is only bettering female prospects for the future of America.

Good job, asian immigrants. Damn good job.

I dunno why people can't just use 'brown'.

Like all the other brown people I know use it fine, as do the black people I know, but white people especially seem super squeamish and use 'asian' instead and it's 100% more annoying.

It's like they're so scared of not being PC they have to use a more generalizing term.

Use desi or south asian if this bothers you so much

I really hate that all asians are grouped up together like that.

I mean, whites, blacks and hispanics all look the same, so it makes sense, but compare Chinese and indians. Why they gotta be grouped up together?

Just a big pet peeve of mine.

I'd rather just be classified as 'brown' than 'asian' all the time.

Asian is just so fucking vague and unhelpful.

Like if I tell a guy over the phone I'm asian like how the fuck does that help? You can't even get a decent image in your head, tell him your brown or white and it works, bam instant picture.

I fucking hate asian.

Hispanics really don't look the same, but I get what you mean. There's hispanics of all races, but for most people an asian hispanic would just be asian. Hispanic seems to be the term in the US to refer to those brown or not quite white looking people.

Here in the UK Asian = Indian Subcontinent. Then you have East Asian, SE Asian, Arab/Middle Eastern and Central Asian when generally describing a persons origin.

You know what I mean, generally people from the same race have similar looking characteristics, it's not hard to picture a white, black or hispanic person in your head.

Not really no. If by black race you mean people with dark skin, sub-saharan africa spans like 50 countries and they definitely don't all have similar looking characteristics. "Black" is about as broad a term as "asians".

Yep. Same with "hispanic," as there's plenty of both white and black hispanics.

I don't, there are brown people (sri lankans for example) that can be a lot darker than a lot of black people i know. While I as a brown person (north indian origin I think), am on par with or lighter than a lot of white people I know. But that doesn't make my any less 'brown'.

Black is about as broad as brown, which imo is much less broad than asian, but still broad enough that you can get a general picture. I mean, indians and saudis might have some very different features, but I think they're both similar enough that you can categorize them as 'brown' imo.

Yeah, it's only ever been a thing to me since I moved here, I've had people both use asian, and brown, and I much prefer the latter.

Yeah I get that, it was probably the worst example on my part.

Honestly most of these posts of full of dumbness on my part.

I just don't want to be classified as asian.

Columbus didn't get it wrong when he called the people he found in the Americas "Indians," he was just wearing future goggles.

Seriously, though, that term is not cool to use anymore.

Then what's the proper term? That's what my family called ourselves when not specifying the country.

Call yourself whatever you want.

I'm fine with Asian or East Asian. I don't like oriental (makes me think of food and objects).

Wait until the Great African Wave in 2030

And then in 2050 it will roll back to the Irish and Italians with an interesting spurt of Germans and English. And then in 2086 President Renee Meagan will grant amnesty to a bunch of hispanics and then

I agree. The term makes little sense since it's lumping disparate groups together.

I dunno why people can't just use 'brown'.

I personally use "brown" to describe South Asians too (since it's the term of choice for my brown friends), but it has no set meaning either. Loads of people from Middle Easterners to Hispanics to South Asians are referred to as brown.

It's gonna be a while but politically people have already been buzzing for years about how to win the Asian American vote. Right now Asian Americans vote dependably democratic but some republicans see high participation in religion, culturally inherited conservatism on some issues, and higher income (leading to supporting lower taxes) as ways to win the Asian voting bloc. I'm pretty sure they're wrong and republicans will continue to lose the Asian vote as spectacularly as they lose all minority voting blocs.

I think it's still PC in Germany. I'm not sure though.

Different languages... eh. But it's quite interesting to look at the differences what is PC in different countries and culture. Trying talking about races in Germany the same way with thr somplified white, black, asiabs etc. as in the USA and it wouldn't be PC.

Honestly, making any prediction for something 50 years in the future seems dumb. Way to much can happen in the time period I'm sure what they see is immigration of Asia have been increasing at a faster rate than Hispanics over the past few years and are just extrapolating that over the next 50 years.

all according to keikaku

(im asian)

but seriously im surprised at this news.

i didn't think we could do that i thought the hispanic population was many times more than us
