Asians to overtake Hispanics as largest US immigrant group over the next 50 years

Whats it going to cost to build a wall around the Pacific ocean?

Seems feasible.

Next we're gonna be takin' yer jerbs, yer wife, yer kids, yer government! Slowly but surely!!

I wonder if Asians are coming over here for jobs, what the job situations will be like. Robots are still in the infant stages right? Starting in labor intensive jobs first, possibly moving into retail, IT, and then the tech industry?

Anyone else played the original Black and White game? When I read this thread title, I immediately heard "Japaneeeese power" in my head, that god voice that comes up when you do a culture specific miracle in that game.

At least some, I think. There's a line of thought that doesn't see whites becoming a minority in the US because the definition of white will expand to include East Asians. Which seems a little far-fetched for me, but then again classifying white Jews and Irish as non-white seems mind-boggling, and certainly from an economic and education standpoint white Americans and Asian Americans share many traits... so who knows.

It's certainly going to get worse before it gets better. I don't see global migration slowing, at any rate. The global birth rate is slowing fairly steadily but if the estimates of 11 billion people by 2100 are accurate there's going to be a lot of pain involved.

Strangely enough, I was having this conversation last night with my wife. I agree that the concept is far-fetched, but as you noted, it's mind-boggling that Jews and Irish were seen as not-white. Jews are still given a second look (white-ish?), but the Irish were folded in completely. A far cry from modestly proposing how to handle the Irish huh? Whiteness exists by its boundaries: whiteness is whatever's left after you've erected walls and established everything else as not-white. That's what lets the definition expand (from WAPs to Germans, Irish, Italians, Jews) or contract. Stranger things have happened.

Still think the hard-cap is on some white-adjace status though, which I suggest only half-jokingly.

Its too difficult to predict what will happen in the next 50 years.

As more countries develop the more immigration there will be. For example, what will happen as Latin America as a whole becomes more developed? What about Africa? Traditionally immigration increases once a country hits developed world status as those who are out of poverty in their country and want to still attain a better life move to first world nations as they offer them better support to obtain the life they want.

It's too late. We've already infiltrated the upper management of like 60% of Taco Bells nationwide. In 50 years, we'll have Chipotle too.

You take over the food supply and we'll continue to gain the white mans trust and be let into their homes. Then when the time is right we strike together.

ay gents

This bodes very well for my taste.

Will eagerly await 18 years to see the end result of this racial mix on my favourite adult websites.

I predict that Trump will build a wall that will eventually ring fence the entire country.

How do you build an entire Great Wall like that in Civ 5? I rush the Great Wall purely for the aesthetics but it usually only covers about 3-4 of my settlements.

Those prediction always fail though. In 10-15 years, asia economical situation will be much better and migration won't grow as much. At the same time, a lot of african countries will become rich enough to start their immigration toward the USA in mass, probably toward europe more if we don't completely collapse before that.

I really hate that all asians are grouped up together like that.

I mean, whites, blacks and hispanics all look the same, so it makes sense, but compare Chinese and indians. Why they gotta be grouped up together?

Just a big pet peeve of mine.

I'd rather just be classified as 'brown' than 'asian' all the time.

Asian is just so fucking vague and unhelpful.

Like if I tell a guy over the phone I'm asian like how the fuck does that help? You can't even get a decent image in your head, tell him your brown or white and it works, bam instant picture.

I fucking hate asian.

Serious question: How long until we see countries permanently shutting down their borders to immigrants because the country simply doesn't have enough resources (water, food, energy, etc) available for everyone? Many countries will run out water soon or in the coming decades, right? Are we going to see more 1 Child Policies like China? Something has to give. It's kind of frightening to think about. Or is this something that is so far out that I won't even see it in my lifetime?

Most developed countries already have shrinking native populations. Even in the US, the population is shrinking if you disregard immigration. Implementing any sort of population control is unnecessary. To a certain degree, immigration is a good thing for these countries, since it helps avoid the serious social and economic problems caused by a population that is lopsided towards older people.

It is very likely that in the long term, the world population will stabilize as it becomes ever more developed. The old Malthusian idea of overpopulation, where people would eventually reproduce and outstrip the ability to increase the food supply, has proven to be incorrect. Human populations are actually pretty good at adjusting their birth rates based on environmental and social factors. Large birth rates tend to correspond with high death rates. When the death rate falls, there is a lag time, followed by a drop in birth rates. Population increases mostly happen during that lag time, and are thus a temporary phenomenon.

The big threat doesn't come from numbers of people. As a whole, feeding people is a matter of economics more than supply. The real big risk comes from unsustainable consumption of resources and global warming. That happens even in places where the population is stable or shrinking. We don't need to worry about any specific number of people, instead we need to worry about the larger picture of how we are using energy and resources.

Immigration is only ever a scapegoat to distract away from actual serious problems. For the most part, it helps the countries that receive immigration, so long as the natives are willing to accept the social friction that occurs as a result. The big problem is native populations being unwilling to accept the inevitable social and cultural change brought about by immigration, and that is the largest source of resistance to immigration.

Now, as for the problems of food and resources, remember that we live in a global economy. The food you ate yesterday might very well have originated in a foreign country, or even on a different continent. Any lack of resources in an individual region is an economic problem, not an absolute one.

The article says most of the Asians would be temporary residents, mostly for school, not actual migrants.

Really?

Can you Yanks explain to me why the article groups 'whites' as distinct from 'Hispanics'?

Is it just an attempt at 'racially' framing separate language groups?

Wait, are they counting middle-easterners and Indians and such in this?

Mostly because Hispanics don't look like whites?

Plus they don't have the same privilege as whites. In the US we use Hispanic to mean anybody of "spanish" cultural descent, and is generally used interchangeably with "Latino."

i can relate and im brown, too

generally when people hear "asian" they think AZN

we brown bros need our own thing, not just "well technically i'm asian hrm hrmm"

You know what I mean, generally people from the same race have similar looking characteristics, it's not hard to picture a white, black or hispanic person in your head.

As an indian I want to be grouped in with other people that look like me, be it in a brown or indo category or w/e.

Like you guys are privileged enough to be.

Is it really so much to ask?

Exactly, when I think/hear asian I always think east asian (chinese/korean/japanese).

I dunno why people can't just use 'brown'.

Like all the other brown people I know use it fine, as do the black people I know, but white people especially seem super squeamish and use 'asian' instead and it's 100% more annoying.

It's like they're so scared of not being PC they have to use a more generalizing term.

In the US? Overpopulation's only a thing in California, really, and you could argue that it's due to agriculture more than the size of the populace. Other than that, most parts of the US don't exactly suffer from resource scarcity other than potential overexploitation of land. But if we have can afford to feed China's cities, we can afford to feed more people.

I didn't hear the word Asian used to describe brown people / South Asians until at least college.

Perks of growing up in a suburb that had sizable enough Asian and Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi populations to separate, I guess.

I heard in England white man calls people from Pakistan and India etc. "Asians", but in America they mean Chinese, Korean, Japan, who is right?

Honestly, making any prediction for something 50 years in the future seems dumb. Way to much can happen in the time period I'm sure what they see is immigration of Asia have been increasing at a faster rate than Hispanics over the past few years and are just extrapolating that over the next 50 years.

I didn't hear it that often until I perma moved to the UK tbh.

I hear Desi / East Asian used for those groups.

There's also Southeast Asian for the places like Thailand, Burma, Indonesia.

I've never heard anyone not brown use desi in my life I think.
