Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

Finally, here is the video of the glitch I ran into 3 times yesterday:

One thing that may be unique to my situation is I'm still playing with 1.1. It seems as long as you launch the game from the game specific shortcut, it doesn't prompt you to update or go offline. If I launch it from Uplay it prompts me to update, play offline or cancel. I'm still afraid that 1.2 will hurt more than help since I'm getting decent performance as is.

Update:

After posting this, I started playing and immediately had the issue again, so I updated to the latest version. I played for a couple hours without issue. My guess is, when I launched the game from the game specific shortcut, it didn't trigger the Update or Offline prompt so it was allowing me to be online with an earlier client version. I can only assume that was the cause and why no one else seemed to be experiencing it. Good news is, I have no noticeable degradation after updating.

Geforce Experience is a software I don't need, I tried it for a few weeks and couldn't find any use to it whatsoever. I know how to tweak my games and the streaming feature is equally useless as I don't have a shield device.

I wish I could just get Shadowplay.

use msi afterburner and your HDxxxx included in your CoreI7 to compress the video. It is there doing nothing ...

I think OBS can use the same hardware that ShadowPlay uses to record video.

It's not just for streaming. You can use it to record locally as well. I don't think it has the DVR like functionality of ShadowPlay though.
 
I had access again to a PC with Unity and I can report that the completely horrible LOD is mostly due to very bad texture configuration.

So: bad PC port.

What I noticed is that, while PS4 version has textures that overall are lower than PC on "high", when it comes to textures on distant buildings the PS4 has the same quality that the PC has on textures at max.

Whereas PC set on high textures has TERRIBLE texture quality on that distant LOD.

It's really a matter of bad configuration. Those distant texture are so small that probably make very little impact.

So on PC it's badly tuned. If you set textures on high you see that horrible LOD. But if you set them to max then ALL the texture are much higher, and so you need more than 2Gb.

It would be easy to add an intermediate setting that has the high textures along with PS4 quality of distant textures.
 
New nvidia drivers are out today, heard someone mention they got a nice PFS boost after updating, can anyone confirm?

Also was tessellation ever added in?

So either TXAA is flat out broken in this game or it is far too demanding for the visual payoff.

Either way the guide is inaccurate as there are certainly moments it drops below 40fps with those settings.

Oh, they come with MFAA. For me, that will be the interesting part. Curious on performance and image quality in Unity of that new AA :D

The PC version really isn't all that bad on weaker hardware. I mean, I'm getting a relatively stable 30 FPS at 1080p with ultra high textures, very high environment detail, high shadows, and FXAA with only a 4 GB 760, i5 2500k (stock clock), 8 GB RAM, and a SSD. I haven't had any crashes so far, but there have been a few instances of temporary frame drops.
 
I haven't played it since the new patch..... loaded it up last night. SLI scaling is now fantastic. 90%+ at all times when I need it.......drops when I'm already at 60. The game looks and runs like a fucking dream now at 1600p with two 970s. Game is beautiful.
 
What exactly does Environmental Detail change since textures are a different setting entirely. Is it just changing things like less grass or plants on the ground? Stuff like that?
 
Shadowplay is magic, barely any performance hit for me usually (780ti), would love if they worked on its video recording features to flesh it out some but it's what I use now despite having bought fraps (which sucks for video recording now in comparison, huge hit). Never felt the need to try OBS.

You can see the differences disappear/appear when you change the setting in game - from what I noticed it was extra modelling and bits and bobs on the environment. I'd guess grass is probably affected too yes.

Alright that's what I thought. I'd like to keep everything on Ultra, but it just dips a bit too much for my tastes into the 20s during cutscenes. It's actually not bad that during gameplay (averages around 30-33 fps). My PC is decent, but not super amazing, so I'm going to have to sacrifice something unless I want drops. I'm using i5 3570k (@4.2GHz), 16gb RAM, and a Radeon HD 7870 card.

Shadowplay uses your 780Ti for recording, so loss of fps at full charge. I find better to use the IntelHD card to do the same thing using msi afterburner + quicksync.
 
Anyone with a 9xx card tried the 344.75 drivers ?

MFAA is supported and it's supposed to give a quality-like MSAA x4 at a lesser performance cost.

Just enabled mfaa and it seems legit.

I tried msaa x4 when I started the game and didn't like the way it looked or performed, but I just enabled mfaa and combined it with msaa x2 ingame and it looks really clean and sharp. The hit seems quite minimal too compared to msaa x4.

I actually was quite happy with FXAA but think I'm going to keep this.

AMD USERS: Install the newest drivers (14.11.2) ASAP, Improves FPS! Released 11/18.

New drivers were released tonight (11/18) in anticipation of the FC4 release. However, I've noticed that they greatly improve Unity FPS or at least they did for me.

Make absolutely sure you remove your old drivers before installing them. I've included a step by step guide to help.

These are newer than the 14.11.1 drivers that were released last week in anticipation of Unity. The drivers have improved my experience greatly. From regular single player to co-op.

- Check what drivers you currently have installed. The easiest way to do that is if you have the Raptr app installed (you should get it regardless). You just open that up and look on the upper left and it will tell you what drivers are installed. The other way to check is in Catalyst Control Center.

- Download the 14.11.2 Beta Drivers for your OS from here

- Driver uninstallation can be tricky as you want to be sure you clean it out fully. The easiest way to do this is with a third party app as they tend to be more comprehensive. I used "Display Driver Uninstaller". It's freeware. Download the latest version, unzip it and fire it up. When you open it, it will ask if you want to boot into Safe Mode. I suggest doing this. Safe Mode will start as well as DDU. All you have to do is select the first button "Clean & Restart". It will then clear out your old drivers and reboot.

- The screen will be funky upon re-entering Windows. This is normal. The resolution will be wrong and things like that just like when you first installed a new GPU. Go to where you downloaded the new 14.11.2 drivers and install them. It will reinstall CCC and all of that and then when the process is finished restart the computer and then check to see if you have 14.11.2 installed via the first step listed.

I'm really curious about that anti-aliasing method, too. I have a GTX 970 on the way, but it isn't here yet.

Anandtech did an analysis of this new method and generally was pretty positive about it. Here are a few quotes from that article:

"There does appear to be a small hit from enabling MFAA, though it's small enough that in most cases it wouldn't be noticeable without running benchmarks. Using 2xMFAA to deliver the equivalent of 4xMSAA looks to be viable, at least from the performance figures in our testing."

"One cool aspect of MFAA is that similar to TXAA, it has the ability to help remove jaggies on transparent textures and not just on polygon edges."

"Getting rid of jaggies is always a good thing in my book, and if you can do it better/faster then that's great. While there's definitely going to be some debate on whether 2xMFAA actually looks as good as 4xMSAA, for the most part I think it's close enough that it's the way to go unless you're already hitting sufficiently high frame rates. The performance aspect on the other hand is a clear win, at least in the games we tested."

"One nice thing with MFAA is that it currently ties into the existing MSAA support in games, so there's no need for extra programming work on the part of the developers (unlike TXAA)."

"Considering the performance benefit of MFAA over MSAA and the fact that it can be enabled in the control panel and will automatically work on supported games, I don't see much problem in simply leaving it enabled for most users."

I just tried it for a few minutes. The new driver really seems to improve performance. I get 30fps locked with my settings (Ultra detail, high textures and FXAA, AA, triple buffer via Radeon Pro). In the previous driver version, I had frequent dips into the mid 20s.

My specs:
i5 4670k @ 4,3 Ghz
16GB DDR3
R9 280X

I get these when using MSAA or TXAA. It's a problem in doors and especially in the cafe basement, in the club hall. White lines everywhere.

I stick to FXAA and use DSR instead.

I tried this last night. Unfortunately i installed AC U after i installed the newest AMD drivers, so i dont have a basis of comparison. Indoors , it runs a perfect 60fps, and when running outdoors, it feels like 30 40ish. Im only at the part where grown up anno gets chased for the first time in the streets. I was expecting a disaster after reading the impressions here, but performance is decent all things considered.

My GPU is a R290x

Can you test the mission assassination at Notre Dame, the first big open assassination ?
I have older betas and framerate there dips into 20 when running around the cathedral in the crowds. Similar setup as yours.

You need a Core Ix Intel CPU. They have integrated IntelHD card inside doing nothing if you have a Radeon/Geforce card. just switch it on in your bios, install Intel drivers and either

- msi afterburner (my choice)
- OBS (quite obtuse)
- Action ! (not free, but very easy to setup)

Force your IntelHd to address a second monitor (you have to force it since there is no second monitor) (not necessary on window 8)
Then copy the Geforce monitor to the second monitor

Then select Quicksync in your program of choice

Performance Optimizations Currently Being Tested

We’ve received a lot of feedback on the performance of ACU over the past week and we’re taking it very seriously. Ensuring that you get the best gaming experience is part of the reason we make games in the first place, so hearing that the game isn’t performing as expected for some of you is cause for serious concern. We know this is a very important issue to you and we want to see it resolved as much as you do.

We’ve been investigating this since launch, because this type of issue requires a great deal of attention and care in both finding the root causes and resolving them. It’s taken us some time to make progress on this front, but we’ve got some promising findings to share.

We can tell you that we have detected a distinct discrepancy between what we observed in the pre-launch versus post-launch environment. In spite of our testing, it looks like the instruction queue is becoming overloaded and impacting performance. We have several fixes we are exploring right now and will continue to update you with our progress of what is working and how quickly we can implement these fixes in the game in the weeks ahead.

Meanwhile, we are looking at the following revisions that should improve framerate stability for all players:

  • Streamlining some technical aspects of navigation: We’ve fixed a number of edge cases with our detection system to smooth certain behaviors during parkour. We’ve fixed a few objects which were improperly tagged to smooth navigation.
  • Improving task scheduling: We’ve tuned the way the computing tasks are prioritized and parallelized by the processor cores to improve framerate in certain edge cases.
  • Tweaking performance for Reach High Points: We’ve optimized the reach high points, during the camera swooping sequence to improve framerate a little bit.

Though crowd size was something we looked at extensively pre-launch, it is something we continue to keep a close eye on. We have just finished a new round of tests on crowd size but have found it is not linked to this problem and does not improve frame rate, so we will be leaving crowds as they are.

We’re working very hard to see these changes rolled out in Patch 3, but as we’re still testing our fixes we need to be conservative with any estimates as far as ETA is concerned. We hope to have further updates on this topic before the end of the week.

The current list of improvements seem to address isolated situations based on their description, so I don't expect any significant changes to the typical framerate with the initial performance update. I'm not too surprised by the crowd size results. Large crowds vs small crowds don't seem to impact my framerate in any meaningful way.
 
Man I gotta tip my hat to amd, those new beta drivers have completely transformed the performance on this game for me. I'm using a freakin 7850 2 gb and am playing at 1080 with ultra environment, high texture and shadow. Certainly not a high fps, but I'm getting zero freezing now, definitely playable. Was thinking I was going to have to upgrade to brute force this sonofabitch but not now :)

Update on the “No Face” Bug

There are a number of images circulating online of character models from Assassin’s Creed Unity missing textures, dubbed the “no face” bug.

In order to find how players are encountering this issue we tested it rigorously and have discovered that this only occurs on PCs with one of two specific graphics cards, and in both cases the issue is resolved with the application of the Day 1 patch (as well as all future patches).

This should not be affecting any players who are allowing their game to be automatically patched as recommended with updates as they are released. If you believe you are seeing this issue under any other circumstance, contact our support team and let us know!

When they add tesselation to the game I fear for performance since I have a 970. I hope the performance hit isn't too big.

I attempted to use a 1440p DSR the other day, and the game ran okay, but when I opened the weapon customization screen my computer unexpectedly shut off and restarted itself. I don't know if was due to an instability with my CPU overclock or what, but I'm a little scared to try it again.
 
That pic would be far more convincing if the game ran good on anything.(Im not talking about only fps here)

Edit: Just to be clear, i really have no idea on what the fuck is going on with game studios. But aside from Yves comments, it seems like the usual negative stuff that i hear about development.

Yup. I think im getting an average of 30fps now, with hardly any dips below that on my 290x. This is on 1080p everything max
 
What are the preferred specs for this game? Was the whole offline thing ever proven true/false?

I just got my PC up and running and want to give this a try.

I5 2500k @ 4.5
MSI 770 4gb
8gb Ram

I dont expect TXAA or MSAA or any of that, I assume PCSS is still a hog and not worth it also?

Bullshit fearmongering/trolling at a time when people are most likely to believe whatever bad news they hear.

The PC version of Unity isn't even horrible technically, its just the game in general, on all platforms.

If this isn't old well then he still thinks we're all pirates which isn't surprising considering the love/hate relationship ubi has always had with pc gamers. Anyways that post is interesting especially about the Q&A. The game was tested because we saw someone leak footage a few months ago remember? I'm not sure what happened after that but Q&A may have suffered from that as well. Also that post reads like what I pretty much expected happend with this game. Lots of stress on deve to push this one out to meet a deadline set by people in charge. Its all about making that holiday money.
