Assetto Corsa -- New racing sim from the developer of netKar Pro

F3 @ Mugello

Track is not Vallelunga, it is Mugello.

It says "@Vallelunga" because of the Kunos HQ location.

So we can add Mugello to the circuit list.

Nice to see they've used the 2012 colour scheme for the kerbs (Italian Tricolori). Until last year it was Mugello's traditional red-yellow combinaton. I have to say I liked the old one more because it was more recognisable, but Tricolori also looks great.

Track is not Vallelunga, it is Mugello.
Indeed it is! If they layout and curbs don't the buildings on the main straight confirm it's Mugello. The circuit is named "Scarperia" which you can see at the 25 second mark of the video.

I thought the track looked fantastic in FVA, they've really stepped things up in Assetto Corsa.

Looks fantastic, I especially loved the little 1M drift video which looked really natural. Kunos' have done fantastic work with such a little team and I like the idea of focusing details rather than creating huge amounts of content with little polish.

Assetto Corsa now has licensing for the full Lotus Cars brand so this means we could see any number of cars in the game.

Lotus is a great addition to a game already looking really promising. I bought NetKar Pro quite recently to support Kunos and it's already tied with FVA as my favourite racing simulation.

I know I keep posting the same thing - Assetto Corsa is shaping up to be a fanastic racing simulation.

What a time to be a PC gamer 8)

Great interviews, especially second one where he higlights development-challenges in the introduction.

Everybody on community boards wants realistic damage and rain but once they get it, they just don't use it. Exactly.

looks incredible, seems they even have the render each screen seperately from iracing so there's no fisheye in triple screen, although the angle/bezels don't look to have been compensated for. those graphics and netkars physics is a mouth watering prospect for me, this could/should blow all the other sims away

Aristotelis from Kunos Simulazioni posted the following on RaceDepartment:

"I'm the one drifting guys and I can confirm that nobody has yet managed to actually drift the car in gamescon. Some power drifts have been able, but no actual drifts. Also Marco and Stefano do not manage to drift like that at all. You need to know the technique. If you know what you're doing, it's easy and natural. If you don't know, it just won't work.

The car is also setup for drift like this:
- Normal physics, no "special mode"
- street normal tyre, NO "special" tyres at all.

- Stiffer suspension and a bit oversteery (not too much)
- 200kg less weight from the street car
- drift car steering rack with around 50-55 degrees

That's all."

"I forgot to say. For Gamescon the grass grip has been raised a bit, so that's why you can see me not totally spin when I touched the grass. That won't be the case on the final release, it's only for the show.

Another thing I'd like to say. I think it's clear now that we are 100% honest with what AC is. You can see from the videos, we never did any photoshopping on the screenshots, we didn't said anything more than what the sim is, we never promise features we won't be able to deliver and heck we even talk openly about our "problems" like the sound department and 3 screens monitor ecc... I know you guys know that now and I hope the rest of the community starts to understand it.

Finally, I'd like to really thank all the nice guys from RD forums and BSimracing that visited us. Also sorrry for all the people that have send me and the rest of the KS team, emails, PMs, FB messages ecc. We haven't yet replied because we have very limited internet access here and very little time to spare. We will reply to all of you, after Gamescon, big big thanks for the support.

Cheers guys."

Hmm. I think that's probably an updated version of the NKP track.

Kunos probably doesn't have the funds to laser-scan the Nurburgring so I wonder what the plan is for the final version.

I thought they planned to laser-scan all the tracks, but have a small list of them?

I really like the less is more approach though and luckily pretty much all of the content they've announced so far are something I'd like the game to have.

I'm OK with this because of AC's moddable openness to user-generated content. If pCARS had such a meagre track list with its locked-down approach I'd be a little more concerned.

It may be a meagre track list right now compared to other sims however it's just the beginning for AC. I expect tracks as part of the DLC strategy plus user generated content will hopefully produce many quality tracks. The closed wall approach by SMS has been decided primarily by those with the greatest financial investment.

"A couple of things for the new guys reading the forum and reminders for the our old friends with which we talk here.

First of all, I think that by now it should be clear that we try to be as honest as possible. You saw the screenshots until now and you saw the videos and actually played the game at Gamescom. I think it's obvious that what you see is what you get, we don't do "nasty" things to promote AC.

Answers from me.
Here's how and why I say things in this forum, or elsewhere.
When I can say something, I'm glad to discuss it with you.
When I'm not able to discuss something, it is for the following reasons:

  • Too early in the development stage so I don't know how it will end up
  • Feature works but no real testing yet so who knows in "real life"
  • Licensing issues and contracts that prevent me to tell
  • Little secret I don't want the competition to know or ruin the surprise (we don't have many of those though)

Regarding post Gamescom reviews.
We've had some amazing reviews from gamescom, really way over our expectations and we are very happy about it. Nevertheless, please keep in mind a couple of things.

Gamescom is hell. Noise, lights, crowd, confusion.

Linguistic barriers. After travelling 1500kms, assembling the stand and supporting all those great folks that visited our stand to try the game, it could be very possible that either we don't understand a question or we didn't expressed well the answer. So some reviews and posts might have inaccuracies, can happen and does happen.
As an example I heard that it won't be possible to disable the moving arms... I heard it for the first time myself after gamescom too. Classic example of misunderstanding I suppose. :)

Spy shots, hidden content ecc.
We do not talk about not officially announced content, because as you can understand there are NDA's, contracts and professional ethics to respect. If you saw something that is not announced, it might be an error, a placeholder or simply just a test but NOT the actual content visualised. We kindly ask you to not create hype where there's none to be created and just wait and see how things evolve. Thank you for your understanding and for spreading the word about Assetto Corsa.

We love you guys and hope to not disappoint you.

I must say, I find Kunos's openness and honesty very refreshing, and very endearing. I don't know too much about them as a dev team but they've already earned my respect and admiration.

Kunos have made two sublime games: NetKar Pro and Ferrari Virtual Academy. I'm not a Ferrari fan (always been a McLaren fan) but I adore FVA! Based on what I've read Ferrari commissioned Kunos to make FVA as a result of how fantastic NKP is 8). Both Kunos simulations are held in very high regard and can be bought for under 15 Euros right now. FVA is 7 Euros with a 30% discount code 8) All proceeds go directly to Kunos too.

The communication between Kunos and their users is fantastic and a nice change to the usual silence from most other developers. The difference I guess is that Kunos is tiny developer with just 6 full time staff and completely self funded. Great community interaction hopefully leads to big sales numbers.

Kunos's attitude and humility contrasts sharply with, for example, Turn 10's rather tiresome bombastic "best at this, best at that" approach. Their honesty about future content and features is refreshing too. I can't see Kunos nodding and winking their way through questions about weather and night racing, dropping prick-teasing hints along the way, without being pretty damn sure that those features would actually make it into the final game. I know where I am with Kunos, yet never had that feeling with Turn 10.

so these guys, a small team compared to someone like polyphony and they can get these results. how is that?

Game is made for PC at this point so it is not really comparable with console development-environment.

We have no idea how either GT or Forza look like/perform like on non-closed hardware or their high-end development tools (AKA modern PC).

Smaller team means more focus and more attention to detail.

Their overall scope of the project is not as broad as either one respected console counterparts.

Just few basic reasons..

so these guys, a small team compared to someone like polyphony and they can get these results. how is that?

By maintaing sharp focus, concentrating on what's important and not getting distracted by pointless guff like drag racing, soccer and bowling...?

(Not that Polyphony did those, but you get my drift).

Kunos have been upfront about every aspect of Assetto Corsa. We know what features version 1.0 will ship with (ie no dynamic weather or night racing although it's already built into the engine), pretty much know the majority of tracks and many of the cars. I hope SimBin start releasing more info about RR-RE very soon too.

Why does Assetto Corsa look so great and will have fantastic physics (based on the Gamescom videos plus what we know from NetKar Pro and FVA)? A modern CPU and DX11 videocards sure help as does a small but hungry and highly focused dev team. By contrast, both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have ancient hardware compared to a even modest gaming PC so outside of the bullshot generators they'll never look as great as a modern PC racing sim. I'm amazed at what PD and Turn10 have squeezed from both consoles but it's time for new console hardware.

Hello Ferrari licence?

We will just have to wait and see. They were in Maranello "officially" because of this >

Before to complete our journey coming back from Cologne, we spent some hours at Evotek Engineering, an innovative company specialized in Automotive Design & Research near Maranello. Evotek has developed an innovative motion simulator, powered since 2011 by a prototyped version of Assetto Corsa. We visited our partners, who showed us some upgrades of their system and the new pedal set that will equip the cockpit. We really like their attention for minimum details, we definitely like how it the cockpit is designed around the driver, really ergonomic and comfortable, really close to the real ones. This motion platform features Assetto Corsa at its best, it worths a chance. Last but not least, we spent a couple of hours at Pasticcino's restaurant, definetely our first absolute choice near Maranello..

One can only hope for a ferrari licence in a sim like this :D

Subbed!
Wow I thought pcars for simness and the new nfs game for arcade goodness would be it for the year.
This is going on the list for sure! Any confirmation on release date?
