Assetto Corsa -- New racing sim from the developer of netKar Pro

I didn't follow any guidelines for the T500 and just set it to 50% strength in the game and it feels great. That's using the standard T500 settings of 60% overall strength and everything else at zero.

For P&G3 I have it about 68% strength in the game, also feels good.

Very different FFB. AC has a lovely understeer vibration that I've always felt was totally absent from P&G. There isn't a car like the Elise in P&G though, so it's hard to make a direct comparison.

Will download the new build and test those settings tomorrow.

Well I'm finally gonna build my permanent cockpit setup next weekend. It's been kind of a pain to pull the T500 out for short periods (especially since it takes so long for the awful fan to stop). Once that happens, I'll start racing a lot more again.

I did wonder about the differing opinions. Some of the settings people use on the T500 did seem pretty awful. So I probably should have been more careful about jumping to conclusions.

Are you using the suggested settings from Kunos?

I'm using a G27 and AC feels fantastic with the lastest build so I don't understand the complaints of fellow Logitech users. FFB is a very subjective area in sim racing; I always use the settings supplied by the people who made the game whenever I can.

I'm just following their forums. As I've said, I caught a nasty bug that had me laid up for a bit. And that coupled with just getting tired of hauling my T500 out, has made me wait until I get my new setup built. The reason I've been worried a bit is because they've stated on their forums they didn't have anyone with a T500. And some users have reported the car literally steers itself unless they enabled v-sync (and the input lag that comes with that).

I'm not really worried about it anymore. I'm sure things will be just fine when I download the official beta.

Just unplug it if you want the fan to stop?

No bizarre steering behaviour here with or without v-sync. I play everything with with v-sync though - I can't stand tearing and inconsistent framerates look particularly juddery on my monitor. Shame there is more input lag than other sims. iRacing, PCARS, nKPro, etc... all don't have quite as much lag. It's not awful, but hopefully it can be improved.

I'll unplug it after it's clearly cooled down, but it's still new and I'm in that babying stage. User manual I downloaded seems to indicate it can run quite a long time. But I will unplug it after 30 or 40 minutes if it's still running but cool air is coming out.

I don't think it's necessary. If it was essential that the fan stayed on after use, there would be warning stickers everywhere and they'd have made the fan stay on if you pulled the USB and it was still connected to the mains.

The way I see it, the motor is only under stress when it is spinning really fast or fighting against your inputs. As soon as it stops, the motor isn't going to generate more heat. So the fan is keeping it below a certain temperature... as soon as it is not exerting a force, the temperature will start to drop. With the fan on, the temperature will drop faster. But with the fan off, the temperature is still gonna drop. It's like when you turn off a PC or console... the fans stop immediately, and those are cooling way more sensitive components than an industrial motor.

Thanks to this thread, I spent 5 Euros on NKP to get this demo and support Kunos, and loving it so far!!

Graphics - Not bad, but shaders are a little old skool, so it feels a little dated.
Sound - Passably OK.. No major issues from me
Physics - Excellent and what really matters.. It feels a little 'safe' but that just means it's approachable and you can really feel the tyre phsyics, it feels like all the best bits of FM4/GT5 and some iRacing thrown together..
FFB - The best so far of any game I've tried.. Lets you feel the tyres and suspension, nice effects, loving it on an old Fanatec PWTS

I also like the menus and love the fact Fanatec wheels are so supported out the box, I know they are sponsored by them so that's probably not a surprise, but having the wheel display all integrated into the software from the get-go is nice.. The only odd thing was having to invert the pedals which are plugged in to the wheel at the moment..

in 30 mins I'm still miles off learning teh track, so only 1:25.4xx, and watching a youtube video of someone in the 1:22's, there are clearly a lot of interesting lines and almost the entire car on grass moments, so not sure I'll be venturing that low, I aim for a nice and tidy 1:23 would be good.. so probably need 1-2 hours to dial in the car/track..

Can't wait for the full game..

Good point. Although I'm going to have to recheck an old thread. When I bought it, I found the thread since I was worried since I got V2. I'm not so sure I don't have to worry about keeping a circuit board cooled.

Welp, tried the new build, tried a few T500 settings. Nothing interesting to report really. Was good before, still good now. The T500 settings don't make any drastic difference to the overall feel compared to the default for me. Performance has improved slightly. No difference when driving - was 60fps before, still 60fps. But in replays it used to drop a bit below, particularly on the close cameras with DOF. Now it's pretty much 60fps with these too.

In case anyone is wondering, they've stated the open beta has been moved back till the 10th. I'm good with that. I'm totally hooked on Kingdom of Amalur and I'll be lucky to be done by even then.

I think you mean... you can still buy nKPro at €4.99 until March 10th? There's no limit on the tech preview. It only requires a nKP code, so surely you'd be able to activate the tech preview after nKP has gone back up to full price? I'm not 100% sure, they might be restricting it to people who bought nKP before this date, but that seems rather silly...

Um...

Somebody asked about their previous statement that they'd release an open version beginning in March. A developer on their forum stated it'd been pushed back to the 10th. Not sure what any of that means. Just that, if you haven't purchased anything, the 10th is the tentative date you can begin trying AC without buying nKP.

Oh right. I had no idea the tech preview would ever become an open beta. I thought they'd pushed the €4.99 nKPro deal back to the 10th so that more people could get on the tech preview for a lower price.

This sim just keeps on getting better....

Kunos have announced a licence agreement with McLaren 8) The The McLaren MP4-12c and the MP4-12c GT3 are being added to AC.

From the Assetto Corsa FB page:

Kunos Simulazioni are delighted to announce a new milestone for Assetto Corsa’s licenced content: We are pleased to welcome McLaren!

This agreement allows the Kunos development team to enrich Assetto Corsa’s virtual garage with two of the most desirable GT cars: The McLaren MP4-12c and the MP4-12c GT3. We hope this agreement can satisfy both the street car enthusiasts, and the simracing drivers who, with this addition, will get an amazing line-up for their GTR races in Assetto Corsa.

Marco Massarutto, Assetto Corsa's Project & Licensing Manager, commented:

"This addition proves our intention to continue to re-invest our earnings from netKar PRO with officially licensed content, and to bring the most desirable cars to Assetto Corsa. This licensing agreement is for all the motorsports enthusiasts and simracers enjoying the AC Technology Preview demo, and also for all our new followers who decide to support us buying netKar PRO in order to get the AC Technology Preview for free.

This is our way to thank all of you so much for the great response and feedback that gamers and simracers have provided to us from the AC Technology preview, which has exceeded our best expectations."

McLaren models will be provided as future additional contents, after the first release of Assetto Corsa. Stay tuned on Assetto Corsa's channels to check out details on the making of McLaren car models!

yeah AC is shaping up as one of the best race games ever. If they combine their fantastic physic model with good amount of licensed cars then we will have racing haven.

AC is fully moddable too so whatever Kunos can't get licences for modding teams will most likely create. If the rumours/mumblings are indeed true many modding teams will be changing from ISI sims to AC.

Wait. So am I reading it right that people who buy nKP right now will get that DLC for free? If so, I might need to reconsider:)

I told you something like this might happen thanks to people buying NKP ;) . It's not totally clear from that whether it's free or not though.

From the Steam page comments....

Regarding Assetto Corsa's pricing:

Kunos Simulazioni [author] Feb 26, 2013 @ 4:21pm AC will have a single price for a great selection of cars and tracks. There will never be a subscription model. It will also be supported with additional content and features. Some of them will be free, some of them under a small fee depending of the costs of the license and the success AC will have on the market. We will soon give you a full official list of the cars & tracks as well as more details on pricing.

Regarding Assetto Corsa's career:

Kunos Simulazioni [author] Feb 26, 2013 @ 1:08am There is no career planed for now. All cars will be unlocked from start. You will be able to do championships offline and race weekends, but there is no career. Maybe we will add career scenarios later if everything goes according to plan.

Regarding Assetto Corsa's licences:

Kunos Simulazioni [author] Feb 26, 2013 @ 12:35am @[DDPH]chunkapie We got the licenses working very hard with great passion. I can assure you the car manufacturers at first didn't even wanted to talk with us, but we insisted and slowly, showing them demo after demo of the game they all started to be interested. We get all our money from old projects, invested on official content. We don't try to be rich, we just love this work and we just want to keep doing what we do. The only way to achieve this is by creating a quality project that people love and buy. No other way around it.

How can one not like these guys?

You can buy it on their webpage if you have a paypal account (they mail you the serial key after purchase).

Okay, Assetto Corsa has just become the second PC driving game I am officially funding :)

And I still haven't invested in my gaming PC :D

With my pCARS Senior Account, GTR Legacy pack from Steam, RBR disc in sealed-mint condition, GT Legends in sealed-mint condition and now NkP and access to AC beta, I have a nice backlog once I decide to buy a damn rig. Because of that I donated my 6-months iRacing code to save it from rotting.

Damn, I should really invest that money soon, but I am honestly strangled by thinking about time to play everything, not even to speak about next-gen incoming in less then 9 months, damn..

Porsche. Please have Porsche.

Wasted money. RUF is more then enough for godlike boxter-RR configuration.

EA prices its exclusivity too much, all the money spent on such licensing would be better spent elsewhere - for modeling 10 new tracks for instance.

Really.

So EA still controls the license? So stupid of Porshe. Yeah, license your car to the one company who only makes arcade games. RUF has to love it though.

Does anyone have any recommendations for steering wheels? I definitely don't mind spending a couple hundred dollars but would like to get the most bang for my buck.

The best option will depend if you want 360 compatibility. Fanatec is currently the only wheel manufacturer that sells decent sim racing wheels for the 360. They are also the only wheel on consoles that can use different components (wheels rims, pedals, etc) on consoles. For the purposes of this post I will assume you are only interested in PC sim racing. In which case you can mix and match wheels and pedals from different manufacturers.

<$300
#1 Logitech G27 (~$230) (Pedals and shifter)
#2 Fanatec Forza Motorsport CSR wheel value pac ($250) (Pedals and shifter) (360 compatible)
#3 Fanatec Porsche 911 GT3 RS V2 Value Pack XL (Pedals and shifter) ($260)

$600-$850
#1 Thrustmaster T500RS ($600) (comes with pedals)
#2 Fanatec CSR Elite wheel (w/o pedals $600) (W/ pedals $680-$850)

$850+
#1 Fanatec ClubSport Wheel ($450 for the base. 2 wheel rim choices [1 is required]: Formula $180 or BMW GT $250. Pedals $80-$250. Total price min-max $710-$1130)
#2 Fanatec T500RS ($600) w/Fanatec CSPv2 pedals ($250)

The G27 is by far the best bang for the buck. It is also the most reliable. This really is the go to choice. The G27 is also relatively mod friendly. If you just starting sim racing, or are on a budget, this is what you should get

Fanatecs have the advantage of being able to interchange certain parts such as the pedals, wheel rims and shifters. This makes it easy to interchange to scale up your equipment as you get more into sim racing. On the low end they are a good value but the high end products can be expensive. All of their products perform well. Their reliability is not as good as Logitech's. Considering Fanatec sells you different components it is logical that they are not very mod friendly.

The Thurstmaster has has two optional accessories, a shifter (TH8RS) and a Ferrari F1 style wheel rim. The wheel performs very well and comes with everything you need. The price is pretty high and some (me) find the pedals to be lacking in feel for a wheel at this price. That being said you can just buy a pair of Fanatec pedals or try your hand at modding the stock ones. It is also easy to attach modded (non factory) wheel rims to the T500RS. This is usually not cost effective, but it is none the less useful.

Hopefully that helps.

I meant official confirmation of being included as part of the upcoming full release or as DLC - my message was posted half way through typing it out.

Marco Massarutto, production manager at Kunos gave a big interview for Italian gamemag.it.
Here is the interview (google translated to english) > http://translate.google.com/transla...ovita-su-feature-e-prezzi-da-kunos_index.html

Some info:

- a team of 15 people is working on the game at the moment. They are finalizing the collision system, the AI and the multiplayer.
- The sound is to be improved compared to the TP's Lotus Elise.
- A making of the 4 years of production will be published shortly after Assetto Corsa's release
- AC 1.0 will contain 26 cars, 10 more will be available through DLCs within a year
- Nordschleife ... They want to scan it really bad, but the recent turn of events (the track has become for sale) is interfering with this project. They can't really find someone to talk at the moment. They don't lose hope though.
