Assetto Corsa -- New racing sim from the developer of netKar Pro

Marco Massarutto said:
Ok, some flash news. The inclusion of Pagani Huayra in Assetto Corsa hasn't been officially published but is not a secret anymore, we have collected all data we need to reproduce this 'hypercar' at the best. The AC Tech Preview has had an unexpected impact on our activities, adding a massive interest about our software technology. This is creating a lot of opportunities for our team, and meanwhile, we are supporting some big-name companies that already take advantage of our software for professional purposes This requires time and is one of the reasons of the lack of information released in April. Also, we have received a lot of feedback and suggestions not only by gamers but also by a lot of videogaming journalists and by other people involved in this business, that helped us to reconsider some features and options that should be included in Assetto Corsa (who said "career" mode?). We had already scheduled to include some of these features in additional packages, but we believe that the potential of Assetto Corsa has become so high that we must take the right decisions at the right time, also in relation of distribution channels we'll use to sell and distribute our game.
Soon, we'll have the answer to the most frequently asked question related to Assetto Corsa: "when?", cos' we have a precise date in mind. Also we'll reveal all main features and contents included in the game, starting to show&talk about gameplay.

Career mode? Nice! :)

Yeah. Seems optimistic now. Interesting they're talking about distribution and such. I'd bet they'd have an easier time getting on Steam if they used Steamworks. Wonder exactly what they're talking about with regards to that. Racing sims would be so much simpler if you could just download everything from Steam Workshop.

That comment sounded awfully nextgen too me.

I think it's a forgone conclusion that the barrier of entry is coming down on consoles, and it will be up to them to create something cohesive and appealing to a broader audience -read career mode.

You could make the argument that the same could be said for Steam too, and I'd buy that as a reasonable explanation.

Since nextbox will continue with Xinput I will not mention it, but...

...PS4 version should really happen ASAP.

I've heard the controller support in tech demo is quite good (not that you or I would much care), so Xinput or not, it still makes sense on Durango too.

Who knows if the current PS3 peripherals will still work on the PS4.

Those are USB HID universal standard peripherals and I think we can be 99% sure they will work on PS6 in 2025.

@BigTakeover - great to hear, then I agree

Nextgen consoles and DD delivery of content could make wonders for complete dedicated "PC" sim-racing genre from perspecitve of revenue and creating new users for developers

Unless Sony decide to do a dick move and block them on PS4...

I mean, sure I too think that they will most probably still be supported but in the end nobody knows for sure right now.

What Kunos is currently working on...

So, buying NetKar Pro do i get access to all the content in AC so far?

I'm very, very tempted to get it, now that i'm cleaning my PC and trying some of the games that are on my list...

So the question is, how good is the beta in terms of content?

it's only 1 track and 1 car, but i believe thats the case. definitely worth the purchase though. netkar pro is still a great sim

It's not a beta. It's a very limited tech demo to help them fix some of the bugs. A proper demo that will be free for everyone will be released at a later point in time. It's still amazing though and to me has the best physics by far of any race sim I've ever played.

Quoted for truth. The Assetto Corsa tech demo is fantastic and has me the most excited out of all the sims on PC.

Yes indeed! nKP is a fantastic sim and well worth the purchase price. Lots of tracks to download from websites such as radiators-champ.com who have 50+ tracks available. Online racing is a little sparse but if you sign up to one of the many leagues running nKP (look at the online servers in-game), you'll have a lot of fun at lots of different tracks. Also take a look at Ferrari Virtual Academy - the full package costs about the same as a car in iRacing (or two tracks in RR-RE) and is a hot-lappers dream. F1 cars are sublime whilst the 458 is very nice although a little too prone to understeer (at Ferrari's request).

Thanks, i'll try to do that next week. One car and one track is not a problem. I had a blast with GT academy once it was just two cars one track, so it shouldn't be a problem. Plus, netKar Pro is one of the very few sims i'm yet to try.

I have to do this at least to have a better opinion on racing sims in general.

I only hear good things about those two.

I just got another beta key from Fanatec. Does anybody want to trade (Steam gift?) for a NetKar Pro and Assetto Corsa license?

After seeing Paskowitz's post about still having an extra beta, I went to Kuno's site to see if it was still available there. Then I reread the Steam Greenlight section:

VOTE ON STEAM GREENLIGHT

It really does seem they're detailing all the benefits of getting on Steam (and why you should vote). So if that's true, this isn't some iracing type of deal. It implies to me they'd be incorporating Steam Workshop for easy mod management. I kind of missed that before. I really hope this is part of the reason for the delay. It's be such a blessing to have something like Workshop in a racing game.

More pictures, this time from Fecalbook...

Hmm - first picture of Silverstone!

Very nice.

Do you still have it? What do you want for it? I passed cause I obviously assumed it was going to be for a couple weeks (squashing bugs), then a public beta, followed quickly by the game. Had I known it was going to be another six months, I probably would have acted differently. I'm assuming the tech preview is still playable and they didn't shut it down?

A not so happy person posted on fecalbook about Assetto Corsa's delay resulted in this being posted:

Marco Massarutto: Believe me, I understand what you mean and we know that if you guys are so impatient to try it, this suggests that we are trying to deliver something good.

I'm pretty sure you also understand that it's our primary interest to offer to you guys what you ask for, of course is not our intention to make our potential customers bored or annoyed, so if we haven't been able yet to deliver AC, necessarily we must have more than one good reason. The development and the commercial strategies behind a product like this are much more complicated not only than fans might imagine or understand, but also more than we expected too. Managing a product like this is a real challenge from a technical and commercial side. This happen when you try to do something special, even if nothing can assure you will be able to reach your aim. We can only do our best. I can also say that today, Assetto Corsa might be considered a totally different product in comparison with the one we imagined and designed at the beginning. This is the good: the bad is that it requires more time than how was scheduled.

Of course we are not happy about it, just like you . But since when is a delay a news, in the videogaming industry? Anyway, when the release announcement will come, all of you will understand what I mean. Said that, I can only thank you for your patience and support.

Some people just need to learn to not give out dates when you are not sure you can get it done in time. It is understandable to be exited when you work on something and you see things coming together, but add the words "when its done" to your vocabulary.

And some more Ferrari pictures on their Facebook page

[edit]ninjad by Travis ;)

They really ought to use pngs for those shots, especially with Red cars since Jpeg compression MURDERS the colour red.

The interiors look great

Great news: the fourth Ferrari is the 599XX EVO!

"KUNOS Simulazioni is glad to introduce the 599XX EVO, the fourth Ferrari revealed for Assetto Corsa. This car represents the extreme, racing evolution of Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, with the same transaxle layout end engine type, and it is conceived for exclusive track use. It comes with 19” slick tyres , specifically developed to maximise stability in cornering and increase lateral acceleration. The Kunos devteam has decided to include this Ferrari in Assetto Corsa after seeing this extreme car in action at Vallelunga race circuit on many occasions"

I don't really care for the looks at all (at the bottom of my Ferrari list), but watching videos of it yesterday, it has great engine sounds. Even by Ferrari standards, that engine is something special. And given you race in the cockpit anyways, should be a good addition.

The best thing that can happen to AC is that Kunos decide to self-publish the game on PS4 during the launch period (Q4 2012/Q1 2013) as PSN indie-title.

It needs cars, tracks, multiplayer, chat and FFB support and revenues would just pour from all FFB wheel-owners awaiting proper simulation on their new consoles.

Make it happen Kunos.

That's what I would do, and I suspect that's what their plan is. It's a good plan too, it's just going to take a while.

Too bad no self-pubbing on the XO. That's a mistake. Hopefully the PS4 can soak up some PC sims looking to expand outwards.

Very nice looking 599, specially inside!

About PS4, would they not have to add a lot of "content", as on PC a large part of that will be filled by the ability to add custom mods. Not familiar with PSN Indies, so maybe the lesser amount of content is OK there? Would be nice though.

Is this game really coming to Ps4? because its a great news, in terms of cars have enough to make it very interesting, im just hopping some Lamborghinis. Looks quite good, if things works i hope we can get it in Xbox One too.

I think there's probably a baseline amount of content you should bring if you're going to go console (even if it's indie and digital-only). Let's say 30 cars, 8 tracks, AI, campaign, online, stat tracking. There are a lot of work-in-progress PC sims out there right now, and they'd be smart not to bring that mentality with them to the PS4. I think it will really pay for them to put their best foot forward, and deliver a complete product.

Just speculating :) They are delaying it (probably by quite a bit) to flesh it out and make it more complete. It makes you wonder why, right? Especially when they say this: "We had already scheduled to include some of these features in additional packages, but we believe that the potential of Assetto Corsa has become so high that we must take the right decisions at the right time, also in relation of distribution channels we'll use to sell and distribute our game."

Hard to really speculate. After the alpha, the lead programmer made the comment about starting on ai. So I doubt it ever had a chance at a Spring release.

This is their reply when asked about a PS4 version:

We haven't finished AC on PC yet and PS4 isn't out either… nothing to see here, move along :)

I thought Kunos was delaying the release of Assetto Corsa based on the feedback of journos and others who've played the sim behind closed doors; they are and adding features based on their feedback.

Bringing any PC only sim to a wider audience would be a great idea but the flipside is most console only gamers familar with the two biggest franchises would look at AC and laugh at the small number of cars and tracks. Plus how would community made mods work on console? The ardent 'console sims are for kiddies' PC sim racers would be apoplectic with the 'dumbing down' of their once only PC sim. Interesting to see what happens in the future.

That's the thing. Nobody really knows. It could have just been a bunch of FUD for all we know. I just know that on the official forums, somebody posted a tweet (or whatever) of the main programmer stating he was going to really start working on the AI now. And a couple astute posters brought up the points: "start" and a single-guy doing everything? This was after the alpha ended. So it seems impossible to think March was ever realistic in hindsight.

We all know how these things go with small sim teams. Maybe they just felt this was a flowery way of having another major delay without anyone raising eyebrows. Or maybe there really are additions.

Either way, a lot of these games seem to always be releasing soon. And we keep saying the same thing year after year :lol. rfactor 2 is in the same boat (although you can at least buy your way into the process... for better or worse.)

I eagerly anticipate it, but I keep my hype level low because it's impossible to really know when it's going to see release.

Sure, there maybe some truth to that, but what they said ("we believe that the potential of Assetto Corsa has become so high that we must take the right decisions at the right time, also in relation of distribution channels we'll use to sell and distribute our game") seems pretty clear that they've changed their aim to something higher. Steamworks integration seems very likely, but it's possible that they'll shoot for even more - console. To me "career mode"= console. It doesn't have to be that way of course, but it has been.

That's last gen thinking, man. With no publisher to appease, and no boxed copies to line store shelves, there's no need to compete with GT's content, there's no need to dumb it down. You don't have to sell to the masses anymore.

Regarding AC on PS4:

Me:Can you self-publish the AC on PS4 during the launch period as PSN indie-title. Revenue would be very big + DLC, any chance
Stefano:ya just need to recode the entire graphics engine, GUI, input, force feedback and who knows what else.. easy :D :D :D
Me:but the reward would be great :-). To bad it's that hard to port it to PS4. Nontheless looking forward for PC version :-)
Stefano:will definitely look into PS4.. after v1.0 and a looooooong vacation :P

The whole problem with Steamworks, you need to be on Steam for that to work. Correct? So unless Valve gave them the greenlight, and they're just holding the info till a predetermined point, I don't think that's a commitment you can make without assurances from Valve. I'm hoping this is what happened, but we'll see.
