Assetto Corsa -- New racing sim from the developer of netKar Pro

A demo on Steam would be good using the same track but with a couple of different cars plus a limited number of AI cars would be ace. A loyalty discount for people who bought nKP and FVA would be awesome too.

It's direct feed... so it's definitely a step up from the other videos we've seen in the last week or so.

PS. Damn, that interior looks *insane*. I'm guessing they're still tweaking things like mirrors and that LCD camera thing (neither were dynamic... or at least, the mirror wasn't and the camera was buggy) but overall, it looks tasty and detailed as hell.

Looks f**king stunning...how long must we wait for a firm release date?

I can't wait to see what talented modding teams create for Assetto Corsa 8)

Just browsing RD and Stefano Casillo has confirmed via a Tweet that AC will be a Steam only release.

As good as pCARS looks, I think AC will take the photo realistic crown (which IMO is still held by GT5). Kunos really gets lighting.

Imagine if Reiza pulled a rabbit out of the hat and flipped their Senna production from rF2 to the AC engine. I don't know how interchangeable anything is between the two (I doubt there's much difference) but that would be AMAZING.

Hopefully AC gets the "next-gen sim" support that the rF2 engine seems to have missed out on.

It would indeed be a massive shake-up in the sim marketplace as ISImotor2 has been the backbone of many sims since 2005 and I doubt ISI thought the future was any less rosy with the ISImotor2.5 found in rF2. I'd suggest they'd actually be a huge amount of difference between game engines; certainly AC has the better graphics engine and Kunos have crowed about their fantastic creation tools while over on at ISI, it's only now that ISI are actually helping modders get to grips with the nuances of ISImotor2.5! Have a look in the Rf2 thread for the well known FIA GT3 mod that currently on hiatus due to a lack of support from ISI.

What will be interesting to watch is if Kunos licence their tech to other sim developers or keep it to themselves plus how easy the AC development tools are for modding teams.

That rF2 mod might be the thing I was thinking of (knew I read something about lack of support somewhere, but couldn't remember anything specific). Honestly, I thought it might've been a little far-fetched to suggest such a thing, but Kunos seem to be far more engaged with on the community/publicity side of things (as far as I can tell, I'm far from deeply embedded into the race sim community at large) than ISI.

I mean, are they actually planning on releasing a full, finished version of rF2 ever? Because I was under the impression that they were, and at that date we all start our year-long (or lifetime) online memberships... but there's no sign of a date to be seen. On the flipside, both pCARS and AC which I believe were both announced around the same time as rF2 (I seem to remember them all being announced within a month or so of each other) have somewhat solid timeframes, with AC being toward the end of this year and pCARS early next quarter afaik.

Doesn't look direct-feed to me...

I haven't seen anything in the AC footage (in respect to lighting/material shaders) so far that looks as photorealistic as GT5, although it naturally has much cleaner IQ being on PC (higher-res everything). If GT5 had a PC version it would be in a league of its own visually. It's only let down by the memory limitations of PS3.

For me it is not at the same level as the overall graphical quality that pCARS is offering at its more finished car/track combo. Tech demo looked good to me at some points, less "noise" in the image quality (smoother), but overall not at the same level (detail/shaders) what SMS is pulling off.

The Steam only announcement will no doubt have a few "cave men" going nuts, but they will, once they actually used the service, get used to it.

You have to remember the size of these companies. rF2 and AC are both being developed by very small teams. ISI is less than 10 people, and netKar was essentially made by one guy (not sure how big Kunos is now, but it's definitely tiny). SMS are small too, but comparatively huge.

I didn't think Reiza was planning on using the rfactor 2 engine. I thought they were developing their own tech for the Senna game? I could be wrong though.

[EN] We have just came back from our journey to Maranello where, working with Evotek Engineering we have delivered a new software build for the motion simulators used at the Ferrari Museum. We have also paid a visit to the Ferrari factory, in order to define some last details related to our partnership, and for something else. Assetto Corsa also benefits of this kind of activities, as we'll explain in the next days.

Meanwhile, we are working to organize all we need to launch the pre-orders for Assetto Corsa. This campaign requires different steps in terms of e-commerce assets, communication, licensing, considering that with the pre-order, we'll also announce the definitive release date of the game and the contents and features that will be included at launch.

We wish to thank all of you for the great support and encouragement you are giving us. We are working our best to deliver the best simulation with the best contents we are able to deliver.

Thank you

Safe to assume that this was the simulator they were updating?

Edit: Just saw that the entire FRC is only ~10 Euro. Worth it?

If you are asking about the Ferrari Virtual Academy? Yes it's worth every cent to drive two F1 cars and a understeering 458 plus 3 laser scanned tracks. Kunos stated they hit the limits of their physics engine with FVA and Ferrari asked for a safe handling 458 so it understeers per the factory request.

I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not :(

PS. That screen... holy shit.

ok, time to test assetto corsa tech preview then.
is netkar pro worth the time to setup? any add-on (track editor?) tracks worth mentioning?

edit: assetto corsa feels very good. 8)

Ferrari Racing Academy?

Shut up.
You little bitch 8) It's very much worth buying whatever you want to call it. Bare in mind you are getting 3 cars and 3 laser scanned tracks for time trial mode only. No changing weather, no night racing and no AI cars. It is a sublime sim though.

netKar Pro is f**king brilliant and well worth the time to set-up. I play nKP daily just for a fix of what physics and FFB should feel like. If you love open wheel cars then nKP is heavenly. Head over to http://www.radiators-champ.com/index.php?option=com_jdownloads&Itemid=5&view=viewcategory&catid=4 for 40+ tracks including the usuals like Nurburgring, Brands Hatch, Spa, Suzuka, Zolda, Road America, Imola, Magione, Macau, Zandvoort, Mantorp, Mugello & A1 Ring plus loads more. I'd join their forums just to say thanks for the tracks and other titbits.

That it is and looks very good too 8)

Bought netkar pro for the tech demo. Its pretty great, the performance with everything maxed out at 1080p doesn't come close to dropping below 60 on my PC.

Guess I will have to try out netkar too though, since you say it's great for open wheel.

Have done so many laps with the Lotus in the tech. Please give me the game! Have saved £30 from my steam sale fund since stuff I wanted never got a sale. Hopefully that is enough or a little more is fine and pre purchases go up soon so I don't spend it.

Wow! I hope Kunos obtain a licence for this monster. Anyone who watches the Niels Heusinkveld YouTube channel would have seen him drive a rFactor version of this under the guise of a "Group C" car and I'd love to see it replicated in Assetto Corsa.

Turn 10's legal team are watching developments closely.

Sorry - couldn't resist :P

can't believe i'm agreeing with youtube comments but the physics did seem dodgy in that 458 vid

having said that, stop with the endless previews and let us preorder :(

The braking distances are half of what they should be.

http://youtu.be/O_NNuCIP53I

EDIT: That's a Challenge car not a GT2, but the braking distances still look super short to me.

I'm not sure what happened with this video, but it's the first time I've really had to pause for a second.

I'm glad they found a PC capture tool lets hope they will use it for some gameplay vids ;)

I can understand some of the scepticism from that onboard video. But at the same time I know from previous discussions on other (older) games, that without knowing what (camera) settings someone uses and without having played it (the reference to it), it is almost impossible to judge a games physics based on a video.

I agree with you.

Not only the distances, also the way car slows down, engine braking, etc.

Count me.. surprised.

A lot of racing games struggle to synchronise the gear shifting animation with the actual shift itself. I guess it must be hard to achieve, but it really ruins the immersion. The game needs to anticipate the shift and get the driver's hand ready in position so there's less delay. Doesn't GT5 do this?

A setup with Oculus Rift and some sort of Kinect that can track your arms would be incredible.
