Asura's Wrath |OT|

I am so glad I gave in and bought the game. The demo didn't leave me with much of a good impression beyond being wowed by some of the scenes, and I was more-or-less going to pass this by...but something kept bothering me in the back of my head. "If the scenes in the demo were neat to watch, what else could the full game offer...."

So I finally cracked and bought the damn thing. Wow. Just...Wow. I have to parrot what others have said: this game is an experience. Absolutely a game that deserves to be played at least once just to see what it has to offer.

There was also a lot more gameplay than I expected, to be quite honest, and hard mode was challenging enough that it felt like there was more to it than there really is. Makes everything much more exciting too than if it was all just a stream of videos.

What a neat game. Shame it sold so poorly.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Perhaps I've missed it somewhere in the topic, you know, the outrage after people realise this game has no True Ending and that its actually going to be DLC...

http://andriasang.com/con07q/asuras_wrath_dlc3/
Round three includes four chapters, chapter 19 through 22, and is basically the game's fourth part, telling the story of what happens after the third part.

This appears to be more substantial than the first two DLC episodes, which were priced ¥200/160MSP, and its price reflects that, at ¥700/560MSP.

oh my god Capcom I cannot believe you want people to hate you this much. I can't... WHAT. Thank god I've only rented this. My heart goes out to anyone that bought this new.

As if you couldn't hurt the sales of the game enough already.

This doesn't make me rage, it makes me chuckle.

Weeelll, the normal ending was a fine enough ending for me.

But that still sucks :\

Getting the stupid special True Chapter 18 after playing through the final boss again right after I had just done it and it is exactly the same, the added cutscene concludes and I think OH GEE, OH BOY, HERE COMES THE REAL FINAL BOSS.

Except it doesn't. To be continued...

Then up comes a cryptic "unlock all the content by getting more S ranks, and do Hard Mode!" so I look up on GameFAQ's to see exactly what I need to do to now unlock the fucking end of the game.

I DIDN'T EXPECT I'D HAVE TO BUY IT IN A FEW MONTHS. YOU FUCKS. And now it probably won't even see release over here?! I am quite fucking glad it sold appallingly. I feel like the devs need their faces shoved into the shit they've left on the carpet. NO. BAD DEVS. DO NOT DO THIS AGAIN.

The normal ending was fine. It wraps up basically everything aside from a few things that are totally unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

It's only the true ending that leaves questions, and that's intentional with the DLC in mind. If you don't want the DLC, then the normal ending ties up the story perfectly fine.

Anyway, I love this. Pretty close to 1000/1000 on it, I've just gotta go through a few more episodes on hard (and S-Rank them) and then I'm done. That it's massively influenced by anime is obvious, but I think it'd suffer if it was an anime and they've got the form basically perfect. It's just better as a game than it would be as a TV series.

It's good that you love it (I like it as well), but there is no defense for this kind of content locking, regardless of the quality of the endings. Theres no need to try and justify the opposite.

Content locking? I'm not seeing where you're getting this information from. If it's 4 chapters its going to be a considerable amount of content and it can't be stuff we've already seen due to how the game "ended" in the first place. They can't exactly reuse any of the battles because you know
most of the guardians are dead
.

The joke is, the ending is probably on the disc, its just not enough people actually care about this game to unlock it.

It's probably not on the disc too....not that it matters to anyone these days. From Ashes for ME3 was a 600MB download that was "on the disc" as far as people are concerned.

Seeing this thread popping up again makes me happy. I hope that this becomes something more and more folks get around to trying as the price drops.

It also gets me thinking about the story and how good it was. The scene with Asura and Kalrow as the player realizes the demigods had become
gods of death
was incredibly savage, very affecting. And the end of Part 2... fuck. I didn't think I was going to ever play through this again, but I'm starting to feel like it's bound to happen sooner or later.

It's not really any different to, I dunno, Borderlands having DLC, is it? Or GTAIV? Or any game with a story, really. I certainly don't see the content as "locked." If you don't want the DLC the game ties up in the normal ending. If they'd released the true ending as the first piece of DLC (for free) would it still be an issue then? Because without it, the game feels totally complete. It's only that bonus episode that leaves it open.

I think for a lot of people it's a psychological thing with DLC. They see that there's going to be new levels to continue a story as DLC and instantly they feel ripped off because they feel if it's part of this game, it should be in the game. If Capcom announced that the ending had been left open because Asura's Wrath 2 was in development, people would be totally fine with that, like they are with things like Mass Effect 2 flowing into 3. Even though the actual cost would be about 10 times more!

Count me in as one of those who loved every moment of the game. I'm glad I bought it at launch, and I WILL be buying every DLC.

The combat might be simpler than your average brawler, but it suits the situation perfectly. The 'QTEs' are also some of the best I've encountered. They make sense and don't rely on luck much. And my god at the music!

Not since Bayonetta and Demon's Souls has a game made my heart pound. The way they set up every fight is just brilliant. And Asura is really an awesome character.

It's really one of those games vastly enjoyed by the people who got to play them.
Too bad that those people are apparently pretty limited in numbers. :(

Whilst I initially enjoyed my time with the title, nothing very special at all gameplay wise, being given the run around of playing TRUE CHAPTER 18 after just finishing 18 normal, it being the exact goddam same with a cutscene tagged on and then finding out the game's actual definitive 'true ending' is scheduled for dumbshit DLC completely spoiled any positivity I had for the whole thing and replaced it with white hot rage.

Asura's Wrath is the best combination of game and anime i've ever experienced, and I'm more than eager to pay for the awesomeness.

20 years ago I had to pay an arm and a leg to experience movies like Ninja Scroll and other hype mangeas as well as sell other organs to import JRPGs or action games.
If I end up payer 70€ for the whole Asura's package, it's O SO FINE.

Fromthe illustrations I have, I can tell the real ending chapters will be fun, touching and pretty big.

Come on people, we're talking 20€ worth of DLC, in 2012. that's not horrible.
And I think having post game chapters is great, and will give closure to a great game that won't get a sequel (although I very much hope Asura stays around in one form or another).

Blame Capcom. It was pretty obvious that the game was going to bomb, yet they released it as a 60$ disc game. Only a few people would think that the game is worth so much. AW needed a different business model.

I loved every moment of this game.

Just like long running anime series have story arcs, I'm taking the "True Ending" as the ending for the first arc of the story. If people are willing to make so many parallelisms with anime, they shouldn't mind making this one too.
I will buy the next episodes in DLC, but even though the game's art direction is outstanding I can't recommend it at full price.

So they are gonna sell for 20 Euros? Does the game have a fake ending? Real one via DLC? What? Wait, what?

So far we have news of a mix of 2/3 DLC at 2€ and one at 10€ DLC.

No sane publisher is ready yet to make direct to episodic games on consoles.
I would have LOVED a monthly (bi-monthly !!!) episode for a year.

They clearly enjoyed doing the game and made it so their would be continual hooks.
The ending of Asura is good. And many TV series don't even get to finish their arcs, which the game did. Of course they paved the way to show there could be more outside of the game's main events, not only to sell post ending DLC but tease gamers with potential bigger things to come in sequels. it's called world building, and most of the time it implies a lot of teasinng from the produces and a lot more patience from the fans.

I will say it a last time : compared to how many mangas are now soft-core porn or teenager stories, I'm fucking happy to pay for a stylish game with stuff more to my liking than I can start to explain.

This game is dope. Thanks.

Some of AW's episodes are really short, so i'm not sure that it would've been a good idea to do that. Capcom also experimented with what you talked about back with the Dreamcast. Remember El Dorado Gate? It was a 7 episode RPG that was released bi-monthly.

Siren's model would've been perfect for AW. Sony released the game in 4 episode bundles with each bundle priced at $15. If you bought the full game bundle it was priced at $40 (so you'd save $5). AW has 3 parts to it, so they could priced each bundle at $15.

Not saying Capcom could not.
But they had to release at retailers. or get Sony or MS to push the game like crazy on their digital stores.

I'm satisfied with price, content and DLC thus I can barely measure why people get angry.

My only reservation is the future of the IP, I wish Capcom had marketed the game to show how it could shine even though it's full of QTE, and I'll be sad once I've madly raged through all the incoming DLCs.

A downloadable episodic release in bundles just like theyre doing with the games ending chapters 19-22 or perhaps a season subscription would have made an infinite more amount of sense for this title. This game gains nothing from being at retail other than quickly reaching super bomba price levels due to it being single player only and with very little replay value and still not even being a complete package until later.

Realistically I think BOMBA at RETAIL >>>> BOMBA at DIGITAL in terms of money made.

I do believe Capcpom should have gone gluns blazing and made it digital only, but to do so they would have needed support and put just as much money in advertising as in making the game which is not fine.

Capcom did its job, they had the game produced, found a good match with Cyberconnect, created an iconic character and showed an old gamer QTE could be ok.

These days, I'd rather prefer to pay 100€ for games I love, rather than 50€ for disposable ones. I'm not th only one but I'm not the majority. I'm happy to ride on the poor sales and that Capcom was ballsy enough to get the game done.

I'll probably get to pay for Asura DLC on other (fighting!,) games in the coming years, that will be fine too.

just finished it (burrowed it from a friend)
this game is so bad mechanically, even the QTE are shit compared to games like GOW.
not dissapointed though, because i wanted to play it as an over the top batshit crazy anime and i got what i want.
the ending was a joke too.

I also just got through the game and loved every minute. The fighting, though relatively simple, is so visceral and presented in such an itnense way that it's insanely enjoyable. The responsiveness of the controls makes it a pleasure. The QTE segments were all quite fair, and generally forgiving in their timing. Presentation is top-notch, with gorgeous cinematography, great soundtrack and lovely illustrated story segments.

I will definitely be going through this one a few more times to try different guages and get my ranks up. Overall, a refreshing, well produced game that boldly tries something new and in my view succeeds admirably.

The store gave me a reshipment since the first one appeared to be lost. Played through part 1 yesterday evening and part 2 just now.

AWESOME. This is such pure and delicious fun. I haven't had such a perpetual shit-eating grin on my face in a very long time.

Saving part 3 for tonight when things should be 100% quiet. I don't think I want to be disturbed at all when enjoying that.

Oh yeah, and that Olga general is one of the hottest female characters I've seen in a game in a while.

---

:edit: Finished it, including the hidden chapter. Now I really hope for a sequel with regard to that true end... Wonderful game from start to finish.

Finally got around to playing it this weekend and I LOVED EVERY MOMENT. I was kept on the edge of my seat practically the entire time and the music, my god the music...

I felt the combat suited the experience. The practically regular use of Burst and Ultimate attacks kept everything fresh for me, that and the fact everything was spaced out and paced so well. Also some of the best QTE's Ive ever encountered. I could almost feel the impacts of some of those punches and kicks to the face. I also havent yelled "Holy Shit!" at the TV several times within minutes in a very long time.

I finished on Normal with an A average. I also scored 5 S's (the final being on the final stage) so I was able to see the true ending as soon as the false one concluded. I will be buying any and all DLC for this absolutley.

I have a question about the game. I understand that as you complete episodes in the game, you unlock movies in the Extras menu. Can someone tell me if these unlockables actually allow you to watch the entire episodes without playing, and more importantly without the UI and QTE elements onscreen? Also, when you beat the DLC episode, does it also unlock a movie in the Extras menu, and does this allow you to watch the entire anime episode without the UI elements and QTE elements on screen? Thanks.

Is there something wrong with the voices in the game? They're all so low for me. I cant hear most of what being said coz it's lost behind the sound FX and you can't adjust the sound and voice volumes separately.
Just want to know if it's me or the game. I seriously haven't heard one word that Deus has said in the game.
I might as well just use the Japanese voices coz I'm using the subs to understand what's going on anyways :/

The movies you unlock are basically the interludes with the different pieces of art and such. I'd have to check but I'm 99% sure you can't watch the episodes excluding the gameplay of it. I'll make sure when I get home tonight if no one else vouches for it.
