No Pricing announced, but I wonder whether anyone will actually use this as a standard to compare to consoles such as the PS4.

It doesnt sound like they are upgradable. Anandtech speculates the bigger one is using the case as a heatsink.

In that case, I retract my obviously out of place comment (though the title of the thread still says "gaming PC/console" as though they're the same thing :) ).

Look like Asus is the only G-sync Partner that actually care about releasing G-Sync monitors.

Sadly PG278Q is still a TN one so I'm not getting it.

Damn..that laptop is thin as hell. Nice to see ASUS stepping up their game even further. Always liked the ROG line the best in this category.

We won't be seeing IPS G-Sync monitors for a looooong time, they just can't keep up with the refresh rate.

I'm personally going to wait on the reviews for this monitor, but I'm hoping it lives up to its price tag.

How would 1080p look on that 4k laptop screen? I'm betting it can't handle 4k games

1080p would look better than a 1080p panel without any upscaling artifacts due to exactly 4x the pixels. For comparison Apple sets their 2560x1600 rMBP to default to 1280x800 (one fourth the pixels) because it still looks nice without upscaling artifacts and the OS and programs would have problems with native res.

I need a gsync monitor. I'm dying. I might get this if it looks to be the only option for some time.

The lack of IPS Gsync monitors is disconcerting. Are these "gaming device producers" reading any PC gaming message boards?

Pretty much everyone dislikes that they are only available as TN panels.

Don't VA monitors have issues from gray to gray response times? I'm not sure, but thought I remember reading about them having those kinds of issues. Then again that was awhile ago.

Well there is the "240Hz" (120Hz + back light strobing) Ezio Foris FG2421 that uses a VA panel.

Well, I do remember one of the ASUS techs mentioning that the TN panels they're using in these monitors were custom 8 bit panels designed to offer an experience comparable or superior to that of an eIPS panel, specifically in the areas of color accuracy and black levels. They went on to mention that TN afforded them greater flexibility as the otherwise superior panel technologies had to be overdriven to achieve acceptable response times, which led to unacceptable input lag and ghosting.

This was a few months ago, though, so things may have changed.

It would look very good on the 4K screen. That's because 1080p is exactly 1/4 of 4K so it scales perfectly. Each 1080p pixel will be composed of four 4K pixels (arranged in a 2x2 square).

I've been using a G72GX laptop for a few years now, and I still absolutely adore it. I wouldn't ordinarily pay for a gaming laptop, but it was a steal on Craigslist at $300.

Wish I could justify the price to upgrade.

Yep. For gaming laptops it's cruicial that the resolution isn't some weird one, but one that is 4x the most common resoltions of games, so 1366x, 1920x etc

The only people I'd trust to do TN colors would be Samsung, but hey, who knows.

KB and Mouse who cares, you can't out CoolerMaster CoolerMaster.

More SFF and ITX is always good. ASUS can actually piece together something good.
Oh god I need that G-Sync monitor

Please don't be ridiculously expensive in Australia

How would 1080p content look on that monitor? (ps4 /xboxone)
I have a 27 1080p monitor now and I don't really like how less sharp everything is then my 24

I've been waiting for that Rog Swift monitor since they announced it in January. mid Q2 my ass.

Anyway, while it is a TN, they also claim it is an 8-bit TN (as opposed to 6) and that there are improvements over cheap TNs that we are used to. It of course remains to be seen.

That being said, nobody seems to be making a monitor of that resolution, frame rate and response time with any kind of panel. I'd rather have a TN one than wait for someone to invent something else.

Also, I got a 1440 VA monitor already to use as a secondary screen. The input lag that thing gets compared to my 1080/TN/120hz monitor is so awful that all the color vibrancy and viewing angles in the world couldn't convince me to game on it.

Unfortunatly they also added matte coating to it because obviously every gamer goes to lan parties with sun directly shining on their screens.

Yep, people asking for IPS panels at 144Hz are going to be disappointed. They aren't fast enough and need overdrive (aka input lag) to look decent there. Not sure about VA panels but I'm pretty sure Asus went for the best choice for this monitor. I don't mind my BenQ TN at all, the framerate and response time is worth it.

This monitor just might be my replacement down the line, looks amazing.

Sure if you like looking at shitty screens because you can't control lightning conditions in your room properly.
Not everyone turns their gaming room into cave. And most of all, the laptop is supposed to be used in many rooms instead of being tied to one. That's what desktops are for.

For IQ no. Which is what I'm guessing people who don't want matte finish care about.

IQ doesn't matter when you can barely see what's going on the screen though. It's one thing in homes, where you can nicely set up a deskop to avoid any problems, but laptops are made to be mobile and glossy laptop will always suck compared to matte one.

Yeah, a laptop with a glossy display makes no sense. If you don't move it (and that's the only situation where you might want glossy) then get a desktop and a monitor.
