My dad is a low-carb looney, but he had a valid reason. He was, and is, at risk for diabetes. If he hadn't gone Atkins he would have diabetes right now. Even so, he drives me nuts. Just give me some fucking sugar/pasta, God damn it, while I'm still young!

I have type 1 diabetes, and I eat very limited carbs. To type 1 people, I think it should be medically required or at least strongly recommended (though the medical profession is so complacent and stupid, it will take a long time to realize the harm their current starchfest diet is doing), for other people it can be a good diet, though it's probably not what I would do if it weren't for the diabetes.

My dad has a good doctor who pointed out the risk to him well before he was going to contract the disease. He then put 2 and 2 together himself, went on Atkins and took up bike riding. I took up the bike riding as well, but I could never warm to the food. At least now that Splenda is becoming more common, I can drink coffee in the morning, drop in two packets and can't even tell the difference. I still hate Atkins pasta, though. It's too coarse for my taste.

Are they saying he is at risk for type 1 or 2 (I'm guessing 2 since I don't think anyone gets 1 after around age 30). They obviously have some different needs (for me the low carbs is a matter of keeping my sugars perfect and being able to match up my insulin properly), but I know type 2 people who've found great success in low-carb. If he hasn't, you should tell your dad to check out Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. It's way more strict than Atkins, but imo perfect for diabetics (it's designed for type 1, but works for type 2 and he talks about both in the book).

Well, he's no longer at risk. Yes, it was for Type 2... he's lost a lot of weight, so he's no longer in the danger zone. But he's keeping it up, I guess to make sure it doesn't get out of control again?

My dad's co-worker lost about 30lbs with the Atkins diet.

Months later, he was fat again. It's too bad he jumped the gun and got all those size 30 waist pants when he's back to a size 40.

A gym membership is cheaper, and you'll also decrease your chance of dying from the cholesterol overload by following an Atkins diet.

The Atkins works. There's nothing special about it except the fact that you cut out the body's copout energy source, carbs. If you get on an Atkins and workout, you'll burn weight quicker than any other diet IMO. You get carb cravings, and you have to keep your sugar up, but it's really a great diet otherwise. I use it ocassionally. I'd have to kill myself if I couldn't eat bread or pasta. I eat that stuff everyday. PEACE.

I still say the best way to maintain a healthy weight is simply making healthy choices over unhealthy ones in your diet, and getting moderate exercise. It's really not a huge lifestyle change, and it makes you feel like a million bucks when you're getting all of your nutrients and eating wholesome foods. :)

Yeah, go ahead and eat your whopper.. just throw out the bun. All that greasy meat and secret sauce is the real energy source.

You can't eat "secret sauce," that fucking garbage is loaded with sugar. Same with barbecue sauce & ketchup.

That's what people who say they are on Atkins but really don't know jack shit eat. Anyone who's actually on Atkin's wouldn't be allowed to touch the 'Atkin's Approved" fast food shit.

Since your brain runs off of carbs and the diet vanquishes carbs... then yes, most likely the Atkins diet is for making you dumb.

Except that the body can convert amino acids into different sugars and the brain can also run on ketone bodies.

Again, if you actually follow the actual Atkin's diet and not just the way people THINK what the Atkin's diet was, you would know that after a week or two into the diet, you are supposed to have some small amount of carbs to counter this.

But ketone bodies are bad. If your body is producing too much of those, get off the diet RIGHT THE FUCK AWAY!

What did he die of and what condition was his body in?
Thin and about 80.

atkins is good for people who need to lose a significant amount of weight (50+ lbs).

But if you're only looking to lose 5-20 lbs, it's not a good thing to try.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
people do realise that you have only meat/zero carb for TWO WEEKS, right?

after which you phase in carbs upwards and upwards until you find a nice healthy level.

People seem to think people who do Atkins just eat cheese and meat for the rest of their life. Agreed - people who do do that are utter mongs, but the people who believe that that is all the diet is are just plain wrong...

for the record, i did Atkins for almost a year and lost around 20kgs, i stopped atkins about 4 months ago, and my weight has gone up a little bit (1 kg or so) - and i must admit i feel a hell of a lot better than i did! >:)

Saying that, i've upped my exercise routine as well.

Nothing wrong with atkins if you're eating healthy. Fish, chicken, and your veggies. Stuff like that. But it seems like 99.9% of the people on atkins seem to do it because they can still eat total shit, and lose weight while doing absolutely nothing.

Hey fatty, you might be losing weight while shoving bacon down your throat by the fuckton... At least you'll be skinny when you die of a heart attack at 35.

I am on the bacon, vanilla ice cream and white bread diet; I am 160 pounds, 6'2".

The key here is pooping.

Also regular excercise, cereal, and a lot of orange juice can help too. I play a moderate amount of video games, browse GAF more than I will ever spend the same time on homework, and brush my teeth twice daily with cinnamon toothpaste.

Italians eat a shit load of carbs, yet they manage to look healthier and live longer than Americans.
And no, i'm not talking about the Ney York pseudo-Italians.

Not sure if people who spend time regularly watching "The Food Channel" have room to call anybody else dumb...

This man is correct. If you go low carb for a few weeks, then maintain a normal, healthy diet while exercising, it's an effective way to quickly shed some pounds and boost your metabolism. My friend's mother lost quite a bit of weight through Atkins.

Thankfully, I already have a high metabolism, and I go to the gym anyway...

...well considering what they put in some of these complex carb foods like processed bread and easy mac etc , it not such a bad idea. The amt of carbs you can get from readily available food is nuts most people dont have their metabolisms up high enough to handle it.

I think the weirdest thing about this thread is that we learned that MAF watches the Food Network. Who would've thought?

The key to any diet, IMO, is that "exercise" part. I figure before hopping onto a fad diet, people should at least give a balanced, portion-controlled diet with a decent bump in exercise a shot. If it doesn't work, then go crazy on the Atkins or whatever.

One of the worst things to come out of this Atkins craze is low carb 'beers'. I know of one person who actually enjoys consuming these godawful things. Of course, this is the same person who used to really enjoy Zima.

WTF is wrong with watchign the food channel? Is it any worse than watching reality shows, or .......anime?

You know the host of Low Carb and Loving It (the low-carb show on Food Network) is slowly dying inside, not being able to eat bread or pasta. His imitation macaroni and cheese using cauliflower was extremely ass-tastic.

My biggest problem with the low-carb movement are people who believe that since they're cutting carbs out of their diet, they can eat as much of whatever else they want (ie. loads of red meat, fat, etc) without exercise.
