Atlus handling the western localization of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

Game Informer confirms. Not much meat to the article beyond that, so quoting the entire article is fairly pointless. This bit may be of some interest, though:

“It was a priority to ensure the game feels familiar and appeals to longtime Atlus fans. Any changes made to the in-game content were due to varying requirements and regulations in the many different territories Nintendo distributes its products.”

I want to say that this is the first time that Nintendo has handled a localization like this, as Squenix and Level 5 manage the localizations of their own titles that Nintendo publishes for them abroad. They've worked with other third party companies before for localizations, most notably 8-4, but getting Atlus USA involved is a pretty big deal.

I see atlus don't want to get blamed for any changes fans don't like lol.

Not sure this game has many fans though. Did it end up being any good? I know there was a lot of blowback because it wasn't what people wanted, but that was about all.

Nintendo of America made that statement, not Atlus.

It's supposed to be a good game, didn't sell well in Japan though but that's beside the point.

It was well received in Japan as a really good RPG winning some awards. Didn't sell well, tho

If there is one game that Nintendo shouldn't have felt the need to 'localize' its this game, its not even going to have english audio at all. Why not just go for the M the game isn't going to sell well in the west as it is anyway.

We all know that Treehouse will get blamed anyway like Bravely Second.

Anyways I'm okay with this news regardless cause I just want to play it. Game looks fun and silly.

By all accounts from the import thread, there's really little content in the game that would justify an M-rating as it is. The bigger issues for localization seem like it's trademark-related, between the licensing of various logos and whatnot and what sounded like some not-so-subtle allusions to pop culture among the enemy ranks.

And yes, it is important to mention that Treehouse is still managing the localization, so any final decisions on anything will come down from them.

So at whose headquarters do we form our riots? NOA or Atlus USA?

I don't care about censorship mishaps and overreactions, I just want to play the game.

Was anything in the original release deserving of an M anyway?

That's great. The less memes, the better.

Can we not?

Nintendo localization is not a meme factory, despite everyone's vehement claims to the contrary.

It's not like Atlus localization hasn't used memes before.

the Import OT is filled with people that enjoyed the game and alot of youtubers i saw that did playthroughs say they really enjoyed it.

Nope. Even Japan the game is a Cero B rating.

I get the feeling that Treehouse inadvertently set expectations somewhat high for the game's content when they ran the trailers last year with a note at the beginning that they expected the game to be rated M. Persona 3 and 4 were also CERO B in Japan and released as M in the US (I think P4G got bumped up to a C? Not sure), so they probably based their expectations on that happening again.

Nah man you dong get it, Atlus meme usage is like super duper subtle and only serves to strengthen the narrative of their games and don't forget they sometime use GAF memes so extra points, basically fuck Threehouse

Are we still not getting swimsuits and hot springs?

Nothing official yet, though someone is probably going to show up in here at some point to post the 4chan rumor that's currently 2/2 on information for this game prior to their official announcements that alludes to such.

Is that entirely true though? I thought I saw some NoE English localization credits in Professor Layton Vs Ace Attorney.

Interesting that Atlus is handling it after all though! I'm sure it will be well done.

I'm not sure covering a girl non-revealing costume is due to "requirements and regulations" in the west, but hey, I guess we'll see what will be changed apart from that and likely the swimsuit episode...
Interesting to see Atlus handling this, always wondered who it'll be. Wonder how much input Treehouse had too.

Interesting, might be something to that. It's funny though because PEGI 16 JRPG's sometimes end up being T and this is only PEGI 12 (though persumably with the same changes).

Yeah it's not, it's NOA being NOA.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that Level 5 handles just the NA localization. You are correct that NoE takes care of that themselves over in that area, hence the VAs not being shared.

Supposedly playable at Pax East, curious if it will be a localized build or not.

Interested to hear impressions.

At least that's a meme/inside joke that fans of the original Persona 4 and hardcore gamers would appreciate. Same with this NeoGAF shout out in the original P4.

It's different when it's not just a random meme that most people will get. It's more a shout-out to fans than anything.

Oh, so Level 5 actually did the English localization of PLvAA for NA then? I always assumed that they just used NoE's translation over here because it came out in Europe first.

Even without the rumor we know there are planned to be 5 pieces of DLC all priced equally at $1.99.

Japan had the following DLC packs, Crossover outfits, Cosplay outfits (400 yen), 3 support quests (400 yen each), womens swimsuit and hot spring DLC (500 yen) and the men's swimsuit and hot spring for 300 yen.

The 5 pieces of DLC must be the cosplay, crossover and support quests as the prices are equal.

The swimsuit DLC is priced diffently based on gender because of number of characters. Even if they combined for US release they wouldn't price it the same as the rest considering the amount of content.

Even with/without this statement from Nintendo, some people are still going to find someway to
be overly ''upset'' at the localization of this game.

I'm hyped though. I've already preordered the Special Edition of #FE.

That one, I'm pretty sure they just reused what NoE did since it had the Euro VA for Luke. Probably much cheaper for both Level 5 and NOA.

That was not a neogaf shout out.

I may be misremembering or confusing that with something else, but wasn't that a change made in the Japanese version between prerelease and final versions?

Yes, Kiria's idol outfit changed between reveal (was even shown in the Western direct) and release. Funnily enough the original design is still visible in the game's anime intro for a brief moment.

This is different though, further pointless censorship of an ultra-niche t-rated game.

You know, once some people decided that Treehouse is basically Memetendo, you will have a really though time to convince them otherwise. Since Jokes = Memes and Memes = bad. Very bad.

But don't get me wrong, I agree with you :p

Oh wait, this is not as exciting of news as I thought. So basically Nintendo decided what content to axe for no reason and let Atlus do the translation?

Yay...
Wish NoA would just fuck off on anything not guaranteed to be rated E

Yes, though additional NA-specific costume changes have been seen in the recent trailers as well.

Yeah I wouldn't look at this announcement and think less edits will be made, as Nintendo is still publishing.

Not that the edits would have anything to do with a M vs. T rating anyway.

Yeah, it would make sense.

I guess working with Atlus USA also makes sense, since they're used to localizing Atlus Japan titles anyway. Still, with how busy Atlus USA is these days (especially since they're now handling localization of Sega titles, from what I understand), part of me thought that either Treehouse would handle it or they'd send it to 8-4.
