i bought the new Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. they cost £380 and i've never spent anywhere near that on audio hardware before. i do own XM3 earphones which were £170 but i got them as a gift. most i've spent myself is £70 for some hyperx headphones about 5 years ago. so i wouldn't say i'm an audiophile but i am willing to spend almost £400 on headphones. i guess you could say i'm dipping my toes in the water! i do appreciate good quality sounding music and would maybe go a bit further than the average person. i do have some vinyl records and i bought a sound card for my PC.

anyway, my question is this... i am probably going to move to Apple Music from Spotify and AM has lossless/hi-res lossless. i know you can't do lossless over bluetooth and Apple recommends using wired headphones and an external DAC if you are listening at over 48kHz. if i were to use the 3.5mm cable with the XM5 headphones and get a lighting to 3.5mm adapter would i be able to listen to lossless that way?
The Apple adapter is hot rubbish. Don't waste your money on it. And iPhones don't have a great DAC either.

So you'll need a Lightning DAC adapter thatcs decent. I have no recommendations unfortunately as the 'great era of dongles providing you choice' hasn't materialised.

The current Apple adapter has a SINAD 40dB lower than a subjectively silent room and transparent measurements by every other metric. There is absolutely nothing hot rubbish about its DAC section, it's flawless within the limits of super human hearing. Being a passive dongle however, its Amp section is what sucks and doesn't have anywhere near the power to drive high load headphones.

so i posted in here a couple weeks ago that i bought the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. about to return them because they seem to be faulty. they keep randomly turning off when i've got them on and listening to music. i went into the headphones app and checked all the settings incase they was anything that might have them turn off. the only setting i could see was to turn off if i remove them but that doesn't help. i tried completely resetting them and reconnecting them to my phone but it's still happening.

either it's a bug that might get fixed in an update or they are faulty. it's frustrating and i don't know if/when Sony will patch it. i don't want to wait weeks/months in the hope of a patch and realise it's likely a hardware issue.

i tried searching online to see if anyone has the issue but couldn't find anything. anyone else heard of anything? i'm so disappointed because i really liked the headphones :(

Hopefully it can be fixable with a firmware update. What are you leaning toward as an alternative? I was tempted to get the Drop + THX Panda but ended going further into the walled garden with the AirPod Max.

i was just going to edit my post again to say that i've cancelled the return. i'll keep them and disable the "turn off when removed" like mentioned in the reddit post and i'll see if that helps any. i have until the 13th July to return but i suppose even after that if they are faulty i can return them. hopefully it is just a bug and it'll get fixed.

i was looking at the airpod max but they are simply too expensive. i had to stretch to justify £380 for the XM5. the AirPod max is £170 more :messenger_anguished: i was going to either wait a while and buy the XM5 again or just get the XM4.

The AirPod Maxes are worse as well. I'd send them into Sony and see what they can do.

I’ve had the XM3 for several years with no issues regarding self power down, however, could be model differences I suppose.

Strange. I had this happen randomly one day with my sony wf-1000xm3 buds but the issue resolved itself once I fully disconnected the buds from the phone, reset the phone, and resynced the buds

Good luck man, but for me it was just something goofy in the connection me thinks. Hasn't happened since

Spatial Audio alone makes the price tag justifiable for me. If the album has it, I would rather listen on my APM rather than my Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pros. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

i don't like the spatial audio in apple music. mostly it's too quiet. on my XM3 earphones i could hear a difference but with the XM5 i can't tell any difference except it's quiet. with it off it sounds better, i think.

maybe it's different on the max headphones.

Interesting, I thought the feature was captive to Apple headphones. Even when I force Always On, I do not get the effect of Spatial Audio on my DT 1990s the same way I do on the APM. I'll have to mess around with it some more I guess.

i don't know to be honest. i have the option to turn "dolby atmos" on so just thought it was the same thing.

edit: it seems if you have airpods then it uses the gyro/motion sensors to adjust the audio. maybe dolby atmos is a basic spatial audio for all headsets but if you have airpods it's enhanced?

The head tracking stuff honestly kind of sucks. I keep it stationary when using it.

Get a Sonos Arc, or beam if you wanna go cheaper.

Or better yet get a the new Sony sound bar bit more than 1000.

They all do virtual surrond and do it really well. The new samsung sound bar with rears is also pretty good.
I ended up getting the Beam and One SL’s for surround sound. I had $110 Costco card I used for the beam and $180 in rewards from Best Buy for the One’s. Eventually I think I’ll get the sub too but so far I am extremely impressed with these. Super easy setup, impressive sound stage and separation for my bedroom and the surround sound is nice and loud. I have a mini home theater in my king size bed now!

Anybody got experience with FiiO products? My Marantz HD-DAC died and I need a new headphone amplifier with DAC.

This has gotten some glowing reviews but just not sure how well these are build as the brand is new to me? The specs seem good though.

Only the FiiO E10k. I was not impressed by it but that's probably more a byproduct of the low cost than the quality of FiiO products. I say that because FiiO seems widely regarded. It was also driving my DT 1990 Pros and my comparison was to the Schiit Magni & Modi so not exactly a fair shake for the FiiO.

They are a decent budget option and have been around quite a while with a good reputation.

I wouldn't get their higher end stuff, but only because at those prices more specialist products are available.

If you want an amp for a specific purpose though, then they probably have something that'll do. Can't say the same for many others.

I have booth headphones and disagree. Max has better anc, build quality and better performance, but worse comfort and no usb c.

And apples spacial audio only works on supported Apple hp.

The Max are far too heavy. I'd say the build quality is subjective (the Sony's plastic is fine) and their want to use metal is largely why they are so heavy.

The ANC is not subtle and has far too much of the 'pressure' some ANC has.

Lightning and USB C are inferior audio connectors as they are less physically flexible. If I care about extra DACs or amps, then there are a) still shockingly few USB C ones and b) you're probably going to be getting something less portable anyway.

I have no time for proprietary crap for audio.

Build quality is not subjective - you can measure it. MAX are in another realm compared to the Sonys. I own them, its not even a discussion.
I agree with you regarding comfort, the Sonys can stay longer on the head for more activities.

ANC with the MAX is best in segment imo, and better than on the Sonys. Not by a lot but better overall.

You don't buy either hp for listening with a DAC/cable, there are much ... much better HP out there (for a fraction of the cost) for this kind of listening (I use my Sennheiser HD800S for this).

In pro HP there is a lot of proprietary connectors etc. My HD800S being one example, the cable terminates in a Sennheiser specific plug that costs a fortune to replace etc.

I have found my end game system for our French Polynesian home.

Incredible timing, was just about to pull the trigger on DCS Bartok.

Now, this requires a much tougher discussion with the chairperson of our household…
What’s the job of the dedicated master clock in this configuration ?

I know of master clocks when syncing multiple recording / playback devices but I can’t figure it out here.

I know of master clocks when syncing multiple recording / playback devices but I can’t figure it out here.
From the review:
The Lina Master Clock performs the same function as the Rossini Master Clock, and is housed in the smaller Lina chassis. Clocking is used to keep the digital circuits, including power supplies, high-speed signal processing and modulation, in sync with the main audio clock and operating at exactly the same time. This effectively serves to reduce jitter and as a result improves the sound quality when using the network or USB inputs.

Reviewers perception of the sound with & without:
Intrigued by reports from Bartok owners of improved performance by adding the Rossini Master Clock to the Bartok, I had the opportunity to demo and compare the standalone Bartok and the Bartok + Rossini Master Clock earlier this year, at CanJam Singapore 2022. It was a revelatory experience. The addition of the Master Clock added improved soundstage depth, sounded more focused, and seemingly more musical information was able to transfer through. To draw an analogy, it was like looking at a higher resolution photo with more megapixels of information. To be clear, the Bartok already sounds excellent on its own, and the difference of adding the Master Clock only really becomes apparent on a direct A/B comparison.

I'd be curious to hear this myself as I am a bit skeptical on those claims. Not saying it can't be true, just that I want to hear with my own ears before forming an opinion myself.

How good is the this Schiit stack?

maxresdefault.jpg
I've got the Modi, Loki Mini+, and Magni. For ~$100-150 each, it's an impressive set-up IMO.

YouTubers like John Darko and Andrew Robinson have some reviews:

They do have some reduced prices on b-stock if you're looking for a deal. Because of the already low cost, Schiit products don't go on sale.

So they're good value for the money but you wouldn't consider the audio quality in audiophile territory?

To me it is audiophile quality. IMO, the modi/magni combo are more than enough for passive listening and work very well for active listening. I'm definitely a 'budget' audiophile so take that into account.

I'm not so convinced I would want to spend more money on a DAC or headphone Amp at this stage. I primarily listen to my speakers over headphones these days anyway.

When I do listen on my headphones, the DAC/Amp in the Schiit stack sound better than the headphone output on the Audioengine N22 (which I use to power my Kef Q150 speakers). I have never used a high end DAC or Amp, so I can't really state as a matter of fact how well Schiit punches above its price tag. For the price, I have absolutely zero regrets with the Schiit products.

I’m still on the RME ADI 2 DAC hypetrain. The amount of features for the money, given it’s quality and regular software upkeep, is first class.

They hooked me up within days with a custom firmware after I had some problems with an rather obscure playback app on Mac etc. dual EQ (per Channel) and all kinds of things to play around … would buy again.

You got them yet? Also keen to hear impressions. I know the monoprice monolith planars get good reviews, but dont need any over ears for now.

Recently had a go at the KEF LS60 WIRELESS and even though they were mesmerizing to look at, the longer I listened to them the more I realized that everything was flat. There was no layering, instrument separation was pretty abysmal and that string and percussion instruments didn't sound true to life. It also shat out bad recordings and sometimes even good ones. Simply put, the magic was never present in the room.

Ordered a Schiit Folkvangr. Half because gotta love that somebody is crazy enough to release a 10 tube amp, half because I’m curious to hear what tubes sound like without anything btw them and the cans, and half hoping they will warm up my Sennheiser HD820s.

That looks sick

Not gonna lie, it many outside of Schiit make good sounding AND good looking. All subjective of course but for me they nail it. My bifrost 2 + jotunheim 2 stack in black looks sick next to my meshilicious build.
