AudiophileGAF, are these good cans? Amazon is having a sale.

These cans are set to arrive tomorrow, and I'm pretty excited to use them as I haven't really had a good pair of headphones before.

I didn't realize when I made this thread that the deal price was so good and sought after by enthusiasts. I guess I checked Amazon sales at just the right time.
Yeah, you're super fortunate. And I'm glad you posted about them because I got mine today.

Can't wait to pair the X1 with the V-Moda BoomPro Mic.

Good to know.

Thanks guys!

I'm going to stick with my 555s until they disintegrate I guess.

when i compare my HD555s to the X1, i find it having this artificially airy quality to it where the mids and highs come off sounding unnatural. for some people this is the incredible 'soundstage' they use in describing the 555s but regardless of how the source is mastered, i feel as if it is constantly pushing a overly bright lively presentation which i find to be really annoying.

but for the record, outside of pairing my HD555 with certain tubes, amps and records, i never really fell in love with mine. i gravitate towards slightly warm and neutral sounds and that's exactly what the X1 excels at and i've never been happier with a pair of headphones.

seriously though, i'm assuming you've stuck with the HD555s for a long time, so you might as well see how other cans compare -- you might be surprised by what your ears will say.

Yes, they're awesome and you should get it. For a open-back cans X1 are pretty damn good bass headphone, it's both ideal for music and gaming.

If you want to escape the seemingly inevitable cycle of breaking/buying new headphones yearly, get a more structurally sound solution like Sennheiser HD 25-1 II (pictured below). The cable carrying sound to the earpieces is user replaceable (like the one in the OT, it seems), but additionally the connectors are protected from pull forces, while the cable itself is exposed to all the tension. Have been using my pair for almost four years (active usage for hours every day) without any issues. The sound quality is also great.

is this usable with a ps3/4 ?

Why not? Its just a headphone with a 3.5mm jack. You can just plug it into the PS4's controller audio output.

They're easy to drive too since they're meant to be for portable use.

hmmm But can the controller out provide that great of a quality ?

I haven't used it yet but I am skeptical.

Good headphones if you feel like permanently deforming the top of your skull with the bumps in the headband.

As good as the Q701s are, the bumps under the headband are possible comfort issues to be concerned about. I rather recommend the closed AKG K550 at the same price instead.

Valid points.

I love talking 'phones. I could easily stray into off-topic land...V-Moda, Sennheiser, beyerdynamic, AKG, Hifiman, Shure... :)

Despite the bumps, the AKG K701/K702/Q701 are world class headphones, and compete with the best of the best. Excellent buy at $200. If not for the bumps, I would wholeheartedly recommend them for anyone that's not looking for basshead headphones. They're even incredible for gaming, with their enormous soundstage.

I do need to find a fix for that headband though. It seems like you could easily just wrap some felt or soft material around the headband.

I just replaced the default cable with a monoprice cable and I'm surprised at the difference. I didn't expect to hear anything different, but things are definitely a bit clearer, things in the background are more defined, especially when it comes to percussion.

The AKG Q/K701 series are not easy buys like the X1s. The AKGs have nothing but treble so if you want bass, they're not the headphones you want. Its kind of expected of open dynamic driver headphones though.

I own the AKG K550 and can't recommend them enough. The sound isolation is great, you won't disturb anyone that easily and these headphones still have an incredible soundstage for a closed design.

Is $229 a decent price for these? I was going to just get some M50s but I thought this might be a nice upgrade, as it seems to have a profile I'd enjoy. I have Grado 225i's so I'd like a more bass heavy headphone. And they'd be much better for gaming, as the 225's feel like wearing a stethoscope.

I think that price is fair. I love my X1's and even more after my $7 cable upgrade. M50s are excellent, though. I have a pair of those and recommend them freely. If you don't mind an open can and the higher price point, the X1's are winners. M50s may give you more bass bump. Can't remember and don't have them immediately available to A/B test.

Definitely. But I'm not a fan of the M50s. I prefer more instrument separation and a wider soundstage with my headphones.

Just found out yesterday that my pair was supposedly delivered last week. The ups guy left it on my porch and someone took it tt i never have this problem before so now im paranoid of all my neighbor. Props to amazon on their customer service. They're sending me a brand new pair with 1 day shipping no question ask or extra charge.

Glad it was rectified, but man, whoever has that package is gonna be so happy...

I'll have to pick up the cable as well then.

I was just checking on the price. Wasn't sure if 229 is their new standard price or what. Seems fair enough. And thats basically what I budgeted anyway.

Thought that I should update mine coming in. I've just gotten to trying them and they certainly haven't disappointed for the great sale price! As someone that is in love with bass, these emphasize it enough to keep me happy while maintaining clarity. The cups themselves are unlike anything I've put on my head. Absolute divinity in comfort.

I bought one of the V-Moda cords posted here as well for it. So far, so good on that end. Yeah, I'm loving these.

Since I' missed the deal, I'm curious: how would these compare to my akg702's?
I have them running through a 5.1 virtualizer and then a headphone amp.
(The difference the virtualisation made to skyrim was staggering)

Very happy, but do agree that they lack in bass and the headband is a real pain after moderate use...
