AusGAF 6 - Ricki Lee is awful. Everything else about Australia is AMAZING [Free hugs]

I only know of them because of the splenetic hatred expressed about them on GAF.

I don't think they're that bad.

How could anyone hate them? D:

My mission is to decipher New Pornographers lyrics. Or to decide whether or not they can be deciphered.

Its too late to look at the deeper meaning. All I can do at this hour is drowsily enjoy the lyrics at face value. I'm sure if you google it someone will have done all the heavy lifting, but perhaps its more fun to insert your own meaning.

I'm terrified that Manchester United's IPO is going to go the same way.
Just don't buy into the hype!

I know nothing about Man U financials, but I'm pretty sure they would have more predictable future earnings/sustainable growth than facebook does atm.

Also, ugh that band. Too cute and happy.

I know nothing about Man U financials

In May 2005, Malcolm Glazer purchased the 28.7 percent stake held by McManus and Magnier, thus acquiring a controlling interest through his investment vehicle Red Football Ltd in a highly leveraged takeover valuing the club at approximately £800 million (then approx. $1.5 billion). In July 2006, the club announced a £660 million debt refinancing package, resulting in a 30 percent reduction in annual interest payments to £62 million a year. In January 2010, with debts of £716.5 million ($1.17 billion), Manchester United further refinanced through a bond issue worth £504 million, enabling them to pay off most of the £509 million owed to international banks. The annual interest payable on the bonds – which mature on 1 February 2017 – is approximately £45 million per annum. Despite restructuring, the club's debt prompted protests from fans on 23 January 2010, at Old Trafford and the club's Trafford Training Centre.

In August 2011, the Glazers were believed to have approached Credit Suisse in preparation for a $1 billion (approx. £600 million) initial public offering (IPO) on the Singapore stock exchange that would value the club at more than £2 billion.

A rich American bought us, and saddled us with a stupendous debt in order to do so. It costs us a goddamn absurd amount every year to even service this debt, let alone knock it down. Hence the IPO plan, and hence also the intense risk if it goes bad.

Huh, interesting.

Well as long as they can raise the amount they need, they will (theoretically) use it to deal with their debt accordingly, and you'll continue to have an awesome team to barrack for!

Leaving aside the straightforwardly unappealing nature of some of the competitors.
That first pic in the smh article D:

Going through the photo slide show is pretty bad too lol. But at least I got rewarded with an Ellyse Perry slideshow link at the end of it!

Due to travel plans outside of the UK during the old cunt's celebration, the events of E3 will pass me by and all news/bombshells/megatons/meltdowns/gifs will have to wait until my return to Old Blighty.

Despite having played all the mainline MGS games with the exception of Guns of the Patriots, MGR: Revengeance will be bought and played day one with no knowledge of the events and outcomes of MGS4.

Zero fucks will be given.

What? Manchester United is going on the stock market >_>?

You know whats stupid about European Soccer, and maybe soccer in general?

No salary caps, nothing to help the small teams... Its pretty much who can afford the best team wins... fun!

That's the good thing about soccer.

oversimplistic generalisations on an internet forum? pishaw!

new Gears of War made by People Can Fly!
I'm down with that. I liked Gears 3 but loved Bulletstorm.

I like MGS games but have only played and finished 1-4. Not sure I'll ever try Peace Walker or Rising, but MGS5 is a day 1 for me.

And when the hell is Jet Set Radio coming out? I want a release date stat.

If only there were some kind of large scale videogame event coming soon whereby information on release dates is furnished.

AusGAF, I have a question, any place online I can get Australian iTunes Gift Cards (like the voucher code would be sent to me for redeeming on iTunes)? Yes, for the Australian store.

GAF going into the negative phase of the pre-E3 nintendo hype cycle today. In the absence of actual news, IGN surveys rule the airwaves.

PhotoGAF (I think that's Danoss and maybe someone else? Vince?) I'm thinking of buying a basic DSLR. What are some recommendations? Is the Nikon D3100 decent? With the 3200 out it's a pretty rad price at the moment.

Also is buying online a good idea with this? Or should I just suck it up and go to a Teds or JB?

Hey guys, the JSR HD soundtrack has been announced.

What they missed out on:

NOTHING!!!

Fuck yeah. Loves me some JSR. I wonder where my Future disc is. That

Definitely not me I'm afraid.

It was definitely someone. I remember people talking about cameras and someone having a photo of a spider or something? Probably a couple of AusGAFs ago though

Usually Canon and Nikon are both valid options, depending on a number of things. But, we live in Australia where Nikon's presence isn't that great; they only stepped in and took over once a third party company did all the legwork of importing and distributing their cameras. After working in JB selling the things for years (and knowing someone who works for Nikon), you're better off looking down the Canon route. I'm not steering you down that route because I shoot Canon, I'm doing that because you're honestly better off because of how good Canon is in this country.

With that said, the best thing you can do is go into a camera store and handle both equivalent cameras and see which one (if any) feels better in your hands. If one feels far better in your hands, you've found a winner; if neither feels that different to you, go for the Canon.

Since I'm going in blind not knowing your level of dedication to the hobby, what you will be shooting, what conditions you may be shooting under, or what your budget is, I'll just have to throw a couple of things out there. My personal pick for a starter camera would be the Canon 550D, that is unless you really want a flip-out screen, then the 600D is the choice for you. What lens or lenses you will want or need to go with this camera will depend on the info I've mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph.

Fortunately, you don't have to pay retail price (whilst still getting the benefits of buying retail) once you have decided on a camera (at least if you chose Canon). JB Hi-Fi started doing camera imports for Canon SLRs only, as seen here. The savings vary depending on what you're buying, and you can still go to a JB store should you have any warranty issues. It's probably still worth checking out a JB store to see what deal they can offer you on a memory card, camera bag, and maybe a spare battery if you want one. I wouldn't worry about Ted's or Camera House as I find they're not great deal cutters, but DigiDirect is a place I've dealt with and they are truly fantastic, seriously the best customer service I've ever had whilst still enjoying competitive prices.

There are other places to buy online, but the camera body at least will be rather similar at the entry level. Once you look at the better bodies and lenses is when the gap starts to widen. Once I've got some more info on your planned shooting habits and such, I can be a bit more specific.

You are a legend.

OK here is my thinking. I pretty well want to get better at photography and I know I'm not going to do that with my existing (and barely functioning) point and shoot. I know I'm pretty turd at it at the moment but I figure if I spend a bit of money (and looking at some of the prices not much more than you'd spend on a fancy point and shoot anyway) I'll be more likely to get into it.

I'm looking at going overseas soon so I figured that would be a good excuse to get one. Plus I think I need a new hobby and photography seems to be a good one.

But I'm definitely not looking to spend a fortune on one. Simply because I don't want to risk wasting a heap of money if I don't use it. But if I get a good price on one and even if I only use it occasionally then its something I think I'll be glad to have.

Same, will try any of their games since the gameplay is always awesome.

You obviously didn't play it. Or like FPS games.

Yes they did. Twice. Damn legal issues.

Heh I wonder if it is an Asylum production?
I do like that they have Liu in there though as she can be a great actress

What you like to shoot (or think you want to shoot) and your budget are most likely going to be the two biggest things to figure out before you jump in. e.g. Do you want to shoot travel, street, people, architecture, macro, portaits, studio, nature, etc? If the answer is "everything I guess" because you don't really know yet, a versatile zoom lens is going to be a good starting point.

I have nothing against "Joan" Watson, or Liu. What I dislike is the fact it is ripping off the idea of the BBC production (Sherlock set in contemporary times) and the use of the word 'elementary' in the first place.

Also, it doesnt help that the US version of Sherlock looks more like the BBC version of
Moriarty

Three people missed the obvious joke: Geelol

I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

edit: what the fuck are you lot on about. Geelong are flogging them. Nutters.

It's more like I can rule things out than say what I for sure will be doing. Portraits and studios are probably out. I know from working with the snappers at work I don't have the visual imagination for that. So I guess it is a bit everything.

Like I said, the best thing is to go into a camera store and just hold the Nikon D3100 in your hands and see how it feels, then do the same with the Canon 550D/600D. If one feels far superior to the other, you've found your camera.

If you prefer the feel of the Nikon, the D3100 twin lens kit is $843 at JB, which I think they could drop to $800 easily.

If you prefer the feel of the Canon, the 550D twin lens kit is $780 (incl. shipping) with JB Direct Import.

Grab yourself a nice memory card for it, my pick would be the SanDisk Extreme HD Video SDHC 16GB 30MB/s (watch for old stock that says 20MB/s, you don't want that) which should cost you around $60. Don't worry about the 'HD Video' part, it's fine for both photos and video.

When you're making your purchase, don't let them sell you UV filters, they offer nothing outside of lens protection whilst making your images look worse. A good UV filter that will protect your lens whilst having a minimal impact on your image quality will cost more than those kit lenses, making it not worth it. Unless rocks and crap are flying at you, don't waste your money.

I've recommended the twin lens kits, because since you're starting out and haven't mentioned what you'll be shooting, I don't know what you'll need and perhaps you're not sure yet either. Those kit lenses will give you a great place to start and cover just about any focal length you're likely to need, they're not much more than the basic setup and won't break the bank. You may grow out of these lenses soon enough if this hobby really grabs you and that's a good thing, but at least you'll know what area your gear is holding you back in and will have a better idea of what you'll need to fix it.

Since this hobby is new to you, something I would consider a necessity is the book 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson. It'll help you undersand, well, exposure. You'll learn what ISO, aperture and shutter speed are and how they work together. You'll learn how to read a scene and how to interpret the camera's light meter so you can expose the scene correctly using those three camera settings. It'll give you a big leg-up in understanding what everything does so you can get out there and have fun and worry less about wrestling with your camera to get it to do what you want. I might even have a second copy of this book lying around if you want it.

Once you've gotten ahold of how to use your camera, have a look at buying 'The Photographer's Eye' by Michael Freeman. It's an excellent book on composition, and I think a must have in your collection, along with Understanding Exposure. It'll show you how composition works and how to make your photographs interesting. There are a number of composition rules that apply to the photography medium that have been around for decades for a very good reason and this will show you what they are. The cool thing with these 'rules' is that they're not hard and fast, they exist more as a guide, but once you know what they are and why they exist, you can break them and know why you are doing so.

I hope I haven't made anything too complicated for you or scared you off this amazing hobby. I just thought I'd throw this all out there to give you a good starting point. Without anyone to guide you or show you how and why some things are the way they are, it can be a little frustrating. I think those books will lead you out of the dark very quickly and to a place where you can just enjoy yourself and your new-found hobby and equipment.

Boxers to bed are the best. All you need. I used to wear t-shirts to bed also, but gave up after a few times with the sleeves snagging and wrapping around the shoulder/armpit area and cutting off circulation.
