Might be going to Brisbane in December 13th-15th.. and a bus ride to canberra sometime next month. Wonder if I'll be able to slot in a BrisGAF meet-up in the former somehow.

Funny where this political activism path is taking me.

What kind of activism specifically? (if you don't kind me asking)

So folks, Capcom sale on Steam. Are either of the Lost Planet games worth $5? What about DMC3?

DMC3 probably isn't unless you're really good at video games. Like, really good. Otherwise it's either too easy and boring or too hard and frustrating.

Gonna make this my obligatory "everyone buy Bionic Commando Rearmed and Bionic Commando 09" post since they're on sale too and everyone should buy them.

I've mainly being doing activist stuff for refugees (because of the recent policy), but I'm part of the Socialist Alliance in my area now which is like a left-wing political group that do activist things for all kinds of left-wing issues such as feminism, education, human rights etc. Of course the basic thing that ties us together is a hatred of capitalism and everything it stands for.

Think I already have the BC games. I'm more curious about the Lost Planet titles... I believe LP1 was supposed to be marginally better despite LP2 looking amazing (I think?) but can't remember. But for $5, I wouldn't mind having a crack.

But capitalism has given me all this money so I can buy all these huge piles of video games.

Elevating millions from poverty?

Cool beans. Good on you

Haha in my family.. sometimes strangers think my brother (whose 19) is older than me.;-;

Aight then I'm gonna claim the title of youngest AusGAFer (at 20yrs old) until some juvenile comes forth and steals it from me.

Feminism, education and human rights aren't just left-wing issues, they're issues for everyone. Unless you miss-typed and you are talking more about your left-wing position on these issues...

I have to say though (and no offense personally), but the SA guys really gave quite a few people at my Uni the shits as they used to try and lecture to us and give us pamphlets on the way to the place where food was served :p

Socialist Alliance guys give everybody the shits everywhere

I dunno, ours changed their name to "fuck fresh" after the union party in power (named fresh) rigged the elections and stuff. I thought that was pretty funny. Then they only pestered people about fresh.

Well I can't speak for SA in sydney.. but I was actually handing out pamphlets about a refugee rally happening in geelong next saturday with a few SA people at the cafeteria in my uni and we were pretty nice about it, I'm pretty sure we didn't lecture anyone, although I really wanted to lecture the ass-hole that seemed really anti-refugee despite the fact he's studying primary teaching.-_-

Dabbling in both Socialist Alliance and Socialist Alternative. It's actually the latter that most people would find issues with considering they're heavily dogmatic, believe that socialism can only be attained through a VIOLENT REVOLUTION (MARXISM) and genuinely think anyone who is not like them politically or even ideologically is a terrible person. Plus their the kind of political group whose solutions to fighting the refugee issue is to burn down detention centres.:p

The terrible thing about political ideologies.. is those things I listed really aren't issues for everyone considering if you consider yourself a conservative eg right-wing you are more likely going be against things like free tertiary education, free healthcare, funding towards social services, rights for refugees to seek asylum etc.. but the latter thing about refugees is more the nature of the political climate and the media's influence, considering we have a former liberal PM that finds our current treatment of refugees to be absolutely abhorrent.
Elevating millions from poverty?
You can argue the opposite and say it keeps millions of people in poverty!

Ozgameshop. 4 days to get WW HD to me in the US. That's faster than anytime I bought from them when in Aus.

So Halloween.

In Australia: "Oh shit, some kid's trick or treating! Where's that half eaten pack of smarties?"

In America:

It looks even better when they turn the dry ice on at night. This is outside my building in a Halloween display by a pizza place downstairs.

When talking about "the right" you really have to separate out the conservatives from the small l liberals because they're ultimately fairly different. Of the three issues you've noted:

Feminism: obviously a conservative wants existing power structures in place, but a small l liberal sees equality before the law as a very important thing, so would be dead against any sex based discrimination on a state level. They would also see any attempt to force certain types of equality, such as wages or positions in certain industries, as unnecessary state force against individuals to make their own decisions about who to employ and how much to pay them. They would say they are for "individual" rights, and females are individuals like anyone else.

Education: The small l liberal position on education would be that the private sector does better at everything, so they would be better at delivering education too. State based education moves too slow to get anything done or make changes with the time, pumping out pointless degrees that no longer have relevant in the workplace. Perhaps the more extreme view is that it's funded by taxation and the state has no right to force people to pay for other peoples education.

Human rights: Parts of the right define themselves by their defense of individual rights. When talking about asylum seekers for example, the question from them has to be, what right do you have to force me to pay for a stateless person? I think some of them would ultimately be ok with asylum seekers as long as there was no welfare state, and fewer labour laws so they can be easily employed.

If you want to make a difference to anyone you really have to understand the viewpoint of your opponents. It's not good enough to suggest that only the left has positions on those issues.

You're exactly right here, I wasn't actually trying to say that only the left have a say on those issues, I probably more or less meant that I have left-wing positions towards those issues.>_<

When talking about "the right" you really have to separate out the conservatives from the small l liberals because they're ultimately fairly different. Of the three issues you've noted:
Of course the point I'm probably trying to make is certain conservative positions (eg extreme right-wing) on those issues appear to be out-of-sync with reality that actively promote worse solutions (rather then different) in terms of questions of education, human rights and feminism, but again because we are on a heavily-american centric forum when I talk about conservatism i'm probably characterizing it too much as being akin to the republican party breed of conservatism from america. Australia right-wing politics is ultimately much more moderate than that.
