Aussies: getting a X360 at launch?

$650 AU for the non retard pack (which is pretty much all they're offering right now).

Not very good compared to the the american price which the americans bitched about (650 AUD =~ 485 USD), but favourable compared to past aussie launch prices... US$300 consoles getting foisted on us for 600 to 700 dollars at launch. Then again the american dollar was far stronger back then...

That said... is it worthwhile getting? You'd have to sink at least 1000$ AUD to get a decent launch, with the X360 and 3 or so games. Even more if you want accessories like headset, (full) remote, and extra controller.

What games are worth getting on launch?

I'm guessing avoiding PD0 is a good decision, while PGR3 is a must have for racing fans.

FN03 looking alright, maybe. Or maybe I'll wait for the PS3 version, which they're undoubtedly improving thanks to feedback from the X360 version...

Also intrested in Oblivion...

which leads me to...

If I spend all that money on a X360, would it be smarter to just upgrade the PC? If I buy PC stuff now though... well I'll know for sure that it won't be able to display HDCP stuff (still not sure how the X360 will manage the HDDVD drive).

I think the main reason for the Xbox success in australia was because it was so easily moddable, providing a wealth of functions beyond just Xbox games. Until they manage to crack the X360 wide open, I wouldn't be suprised at all if the X360 had difficulty getting traction in australia despite the success of the Xbox here.

Personally, I think I'll see how the LIVE service works out here in Australia... if I do buy into the X360, I think it'll be because LIVE is a large determining factor in it.

I won't be, but I guess I'll get one when Blast Corps comes out. Buying a new console on launch doesn't seem important to me any more. I didn't even get a PS2 until I was given a broken one and fixed it :)

I wasn't ever going to get one, but i played it recently so here's my thoughts.

I saw PDZ which looked nice and smooth (it was on a plasma) but nothing astounding graphically.. and also PGR3 on a demo unit (which i played) .. on one of those samsung LCD's. The screens make such a difference - for me anyway, the samsung screen was just way oversaturated and made the sides of the roads and trees look all thick and plasticky.
I basically thought it looked like shit - i'm not retarded though, the videos online look hot :)
The demo guy said it was running in 1080i .. To me it was more apparant during menus and stuff, in game it all just flew by (not to say it was unnoticeable).

There's basically 2 reasons why xbox was successful here...
1) as mentioned, Modding
2) V8 Supercars and other Aussie centric games (Microsoft seem to target aussies specifically whereas Sony and Nintendo don't bother)

I'm betting the price drops fast -- just as with the original Xbox. Personally, I really don't see people buying it at that price in droves and I certainly won't for a fact...as long as there aren't enough must-buy games released on the system that I could get elsewhere.

No way im buying the Aussie Xbox 360.

Delayed, up to $129RRP a game. No fucking way.

Gonna get the american version when stocks reach healthy levels.

I thought about and I've come to the decision no way, PS3 and Revolution out later on will drop prices yada yada, early adopters am cry etc.

I've hired one out from the Video Shop (UK one) and while the graphics are great, it does'nt justify the $1000 plus I would need to get out of it.

As other people mentioned, game prices are just wrong... everything seems overpriced with the 360
I'm going to the 360 roadtrip (NZ) to check out the games... I don't have a plasma or lcd tv either so... I will be getting revo on launch... from wherever it launches first :P

Additionally, I'm not getting one.

I am, but only since I'm getting a good haul of freebies from the various local distributors. Gonna set me back about $1200 for all the equipment I need, but eh, I can afford it.

nope,

they can try and sell me anything but US$95 / game they can get f*****.

just way too expensive, @ $800+ for a console and 1 game and live. =NO

I was hoping the Nintendo DS would be the way through for fairly good pricing of consoles [it = US price]. DS games have also gone down in price [but not nearly enough].

An overpriced Xbox 360 and overpriced games = No sale.

I only ended up getting the Xbox once they started with the Halo + DVD Remote pack in, which was a great deal at the time [Didn't have a DVD player]. Since then they made LOADS of Bundles, more than I've seen Nintendo do here. Like the JSRF/SEGA GT pack, a Toe Jam III/Blinx/Some other game pack. It's really the only reason why it's done so well over here [Plus the v8 Supercar games etc].

Well, back when they came out PS2 was $750, XBOX was $750 also I think. Then a month later PS2 went down in price, causing MS to go into panic mode and do the same thing, causing the Gamecube to ALSO come down in price [which hadn't been released yet :lol ]

I forget exact prices though. Xbox did a whole lot of bundling though. PS2 never really started bundling things until Non-Games like Eye-Toy's and "BUZZ" came out.

XE.com says AU$1000 is US$736.15. Is that what you were asking?

Not getting one at launch, BTW. I can't afford one and if I could I'd probably wait a few months anyways. But Oblivion... :'(

360 ($649) is launching at less than the PS2 ($749) did 5 years ago. Of course our dollar is a lot stronger now.

And I've not seen one single 129.95 game. 2k Games stuff (Amped, Top Spin, NHL/NBA and Oblivion) are now 99.95 too. That pretty much leaves only EA, Activision, THQ and Ubisoft at over $100, and pretty much all those games are missable.

FYI $1000AU is what I would need to spend over all to get all the goods with the Xbox360

the RPP is $649 for the Premium Pack no headset though.... which is top teir for pricing only the PS2, Xbox have been more expensive at launch, and Micrsoft dropped the price of the Xbox from $649 to $399 to compete with the Gamecube which came out as $349.

At least Activision's realized nobody was going to buy Tony Hawk and Gun at $120 each, now they're bundled together. Something tells me Australia's going to be retarded as usual, and Need for Speed Most Wanted will be the top selling X360 game at $120.

And no, I don't plan on buying an X360 at launch. =o

You write for a gaming magazine that reviews games you might possibly have worked on?

CONFLICT OF INTEREST!

Yep, I'm fully paid up for mine and already have the VIP pack including PD0 as well.

I'm even happier with my purchase now that I've had a chance to play on one as well, THQ showed off The Outfit, Condemned and Full Auto just tonight in their office in Melbourne and I was lucky enough to attend and have a bash at these games (cept for condemned, but just watching that was enough).

The Outfit was awesome, it feels like a cross between RTCW and Battlefield 2, with a tongue-in-cheek feel to the whole thing.

Full Auto was a heap of fun although the physics were a bit questionable, especially when you crashed and weren't racing your vehicle, it would bounce around like a bouncy ball whilst you waited for it to land on it's wheels to settle themselves so you could boost off again.

Condemned looked awesome, I'm considering making this a day one purchase after seeing it. The animation/dialogue and overall atmosphere of the game was so immersive that there were parts of the game where I couldn't tell if it was cut-scene or actual in-game action.

I was a bit unsettled as to whether I had made the right decision in buying an X360 for the last few weeks but after seeing some of these games in the flesh on some high quality plasma flat-screen TV's, I'm really happy with my decision.

Why bother so early? The games I've played (the ones that'll launch) are fairly average and the few games I've had the opportunity to play that'll be released within the next few months aren't anything spectacular either.

I'm more than likely going to wait until Christmas where a.) there will be more games to choose from and b.) hopefully a cheaper and more effective console (one without those usual launch bugs) to choose from.

Every console has a terrible launch and X360 is no different. The only console I'll probably end up buying at launch is the Revolution, and even then I'm not too sure.

If that's the case, then why did TY 3 get a review score of 6.8? Why have none of our games scored higher than a 7?

Nice try. The mag's solid.

After hearing about how shoddy the 360 looks on a standard TV, I decided to hold off on the launch purchase untill I get a HD TV.

Any Aussies out there have some tips on quality HD solutions at reasonable prices?

I'm gonna be running mine off a 22" CRT monitor with a set of VGA cables.
I had the monitor lieing around so this is a cheap solution for me, if you have a computer monitor you could do the same?

Depends what you think a reasonable price is, my brother and I recently got a nice new HD AWA set, one of those cheaper big lcd panels found at big w currently.
When set up correctly the quality is great, same panel as found in the LG models and the like but for a great deal less, the main place you take a cut in quality is for the internal tuner which is slow when changing modes but that realy is no biggy.

Just take a look around and get an idea of what you need while checking out as many good in store display units as you can, I know we spent a few months deciding what was best to get.
