Austrian teen who joined IS beaten to death for trying to leave

One of the two teenager girls who ran away from their home in Austria to join terror group Isis has reportedly been beaten to death after trying to flee their Syrian stronghold.

Samra Kesinovic, 17, left her Austrian home she shared with her parents in April 2014 and, along with friend Sabina Selimovic, travelled to Syria to join Isis, becoming ‘poster girls’ for the group.

Austrian newspapers have reported that Samra was killed by the extremists after she tried to escape Raqqa, their main stronghold in Syria, however the Austrian government has not commented on the case.

Her friend Sabina, who was 15 when she travelled to Syria, was thought to have been killed in fighting last year.

Shortly after arriving in Syria photos emerged of one of the girls holding an assault rifle and being surrounded by gun-toting terrorists.

The two were also believed to have both married IS militants shortly after arriving in Syria.

Sabina allegedly became pregnant with her new husband’s child, however she denied the claims while speaking to a French newspaper via text message before her alleged death and said she was enjoying life in Syria.

Tragic.

Seems the fairly obvious outcome of joining ISIS.

Sucks that she was able to make that decision, and go, without proper resistance.

Oh man, I thpught this story was about two teens trying to leave Austria. Wonder why people think the Daesh is even a good idea. How will they spin this story in their minds. Sigh...

I remember reading about those two last year. Always wondered what happened that made them do it, seeing how they didn't seem to fit the typical profile of an IS sympathizer at all.

This seems to be what a lot of youth have done.

Probably a mixture of that rebellious "fuck authority" attitude and diminishing returns for the up-and-coming generations. Europe gets a lot of homegrown ISIS fans for this reason.

Yes we should remember how we were as teens, not always very bright and easily influenced by external pressure.

I don't remember leaving my country and joining a terrorist group. What the hell is happening and what kind of lives are these teens living to even consider such a thing? At 15 and up a person can tell weight their choices just fine.

Sarcastic posts? Ya'll need to learn about Schengen.

I think people outside of the Europe are unaware or have trouble understanding EU freedom of movement, not many places in the world where you can drive from one country to another with no border control other than a sign with the EU symbol denoting the country you're entering along the road. It's super easy to travel, I've known some Swedes/Danes that drove to Germany just to buy a lot of alcohol cheaply.

Good point.

I'm European but I forgot about it.

Because you were lucky not to be exposed to the wrong persons (or not to be upset enough to go meet the wrong persons). Kids running away from home isn't really a new thing, and the reason is always stupid ; the difference today is that the consequences are worse. But the starting point is still the same.

Sad story. It still boggles my mind how any western raise teenage girl can even contemplate running away to join those lunatics.

Not just a bad idea because IS could kill you, but they voluntarily uprooted themselves to go and actively support genocide. If you can get to Syria from Australia you are smart enough that "dumb kids" doesn't excuse you and the best case is upon returning home you should be locked up for the rest of your life.

Eh, I always struggle to sympathize with those who think going to ISIS was a good idea, but end up getting killed.

It's their own fault for being that stupid.

Tragic all round. Off all the rebellions to make as a teenage girl, this is the last one they should ever consider joining.

IS is trully a deviant organisation. Madness is born from trauma.

Those girls had Bosnian Muslim parents and obviously felt it was their religious duty to join the caliphate. Their stupidity killed them. And I'm not sorry. Whoever joins up with ISIS doesn't get any sympathy from me.

These girls were 15 and 17. That is fucking young. They must have had some twisted youth, or a false sense of reality to have made this decision.

I think a lot of you guys forget that these kids joined after being brainwashed/talked into joining by recruiters.
These recruiters probably paint a beautiful picture of an ideological stuggle that for kids with serious problems (at home, school, etc) sounds like an adventure, a way to to feel part of "something" or even do "good" (in their eyes).

So yeah for us with a broader view (or hindsight) and not 15 years old this all sounds incredibly dumb, but still. This isn't a black and white story (like everything else we hear, read and learn about).

(Quick edit: the whole recruitment part is something I assume, I don't think someone wakes up one day and says: "fuck my parents I'm gonna behead some unbelievers in another country")

"HEY THERE'S A WAR BETWEEN ISLAM AND THE WEST. PICK A SIDE!"

Girls were idiots for believing that bullshit. I feel sorry for them but honestly the way the "Islam is being attacked by the West!" idea spreads on social media is terrifying.

"Those girls were not pious enough. They were not submissive to their husbands. Perhaps they were infidels. Not me though, I'm in it for the cause."

Yeah, but you could say that all ISIS combatants are brainwashed into believing their own crap, as well.

I really wonder what those youth did read about ISIS to think it's good idea to go over there seriously ?

Me too. I want to feel like this is a shame, a 17 year old who joined a terrorist group like ISIS being killed. But I struggle trying to find that feeling. I can't help but believe when I was 17 I would have known better and not seen ISIS as anything but a group of hate that causes suffering. I don't know, maybe it's just because I'm from a more privileged life and had better access to information to equip myself with. I guess I can feel bad that the situation existed in the first place.

This season of Homeland briefly touched upon this, having the early episodes focus on a woman counselor who recruited young women to join ISIS. Its sad to think this is probably a reality, most of us were pretty damn stupid at a young age and if someone befriended you and gave good advice and told you that there is a foreign land where you can make a difference and help other people you'd probably be interested. In 2013 and 2014 when these young girls went, most people didn't know anything about ISIS so it would have been fairly easy to brainwash someone.

Of course the best tool against this is education, hope all these countries have campaigns to make teens aware that joining ISIS is a goddamn stupid idea and you will end up a sex slave and/or dead very quickly. The growing awareness of ISIS amongst everyone in the past year definitely helps.

As grim as this is, I hope other dumb teens who want to rebel see this as an example.

1) ISIS is literally the worst group on the face of this earth, life with them is literally hell
2) Don't travel to a fucking war zone
3) If you insist on rebelling, there are less deadly options to look for attention

I'm ignorant on this topic, but how does ISIS propose to treat women in their Islamic State?

I don't think women's rights are a factor for stuff like this. I really think it's propaganda on social media that show some random missile hitting 'Muslim' areas and the aftermath with the message "The West has declared war on Islam. Only ISIS is standing up to defend the faith. Join us and defend Islam in the clash of civilizations!"
