I was planning on watching Oregairu, but I still can't get into it so I watched Euphonium and let's just say that I managed to get past the first episode in this one.
Hibike! Euphonium 1-3
Talk about a surprise. First, I didn't even know what a euphonium is. I misinterpreted it as calliphony, so I was expecting a mixed choir-band thing, with the heroine being a singer. Pretty much, idol stuff. I'm glad that's not the case, it would be a lot more boring. Instruments are actually interesting. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing for music, so I'm not sure that I'll enjoy the series to its maximum potential... Honestly, if this wasn't something that more or less everyone here says that it's good, I doubt I'd even bother. Moreover, I'm also a newbie to Kyoani. K-On or Free look uninteresting to me and while I want to watch Hyouka, I really can't get past the first episode. The only other show I've watched is Nichijou, which isn't really an ordinary Kyoani production. I'm of the opinion that an anime needs a unique style to stand out, like the Monogatari series or even the more recent Concrete Revolutio, but Euphonium doesn't really have one and it still stands out. The production values must be really high, because this looks constantly amazing. The animation is fluent, there are so many little details in most of the frames and the characters look great. Well, it's not perfect, I don't really like how shiny everything looks, but it's far from being called just good.
So, for a show with a non-action setting, it sure lacks drama. And damn, I love this. There are shows that handle this nicely but usually, it's just unnecessary drama to create a plot. I'm not sure how Euphonium will continue, but it seems it will mostly focus on the characters themselves, their growth and the bands journey to success. I was really impressed by the pace, they solved dilemmas like Kumiko joining the club and speaking to Kousaka really fast. I feel other shows wouldn't have solved the second one till like the 7-8 episodes in the season... It's moving fast but without being hard to grasp the current situation, mostly because the setting is really simple.
The main weakness of the show seem to be the characters, other than the heroine. I don't like Katou a lot, but I guess she's there as the complete amateur. Sapphire, on the other hand, is completely annoying and I'm not sure what's her purpose is. The worst thing is, Kumiko is stuck with them so far. Asuka is also a weird case, I find some of her antics funny but she's already becoming a bit annoying. The rest of the characters hasn't done much yet, so I can't really comment on them. Aoi and Kousaka hopefully will have some interesting stories there.
Oh and I don't like that sensei at all.
Kumiko is really the star of the show though. I like that she's not an amateur but actually experienced, but the show doesn't treat her as a prodigy. She's just above the average, which actually is far more interesting. And she has so many cute and funny reactions. I thought she was bland but she's really a great heroine for this. The only really bad thing about her is that she abandoned her ponytail. Also, I'd be kinda afraid that they'd go on a weird route with all those "The teacher is hot" reactions, but I judging by what people here have said, it will try to tease another route. lol
