IBO's numbers are far worse when you consider that it was half off and bundled with a game.
Not to mention how abysmal the TV ratings are. It's probably the biggest flop for Sunrise since Age.
Well, I don't know, they bought Cross Ange.Gundam fans don't know how to react to a show that's actually good.
IBO isn't terrible, but it's clearly not winning AOTY or even coming close so I wouldn't say that it's a Japanese poor taste problem here since even GAF doesn't seem to be rating it too highly. I just think the show isn't that interesting. Gundam usually has political intrigue or character drama but here the main characters are pretty much exactly where they were in the beginning and the political stuff is completely background noise at this point. The romance is terrible (how old is Kudelia supposed to be 15? Why is she acting like she's never kissed a guy in her life?), and this human debris stuff isn't as cool as they think it is. Didn't G Reco do the same thing with a part of humanity treated as sub-human? It's getting pretty played out tbh. The show is by no means bad, but it's nothing to write home about either.
It's not easily predictable, otherwise more anime would be doing whatever it is that makes things sell. But it does boil down to a core concept: characters. Not character development, but having characters you can fawn over, fantasize about, draw fan art of, etc. All my experience with people who are heavily into purchasing Japanese anime releases leads me to believe that that is what will make a series sell, whether it is Sword Art Online or UtaPri.
Looks like Sunrise have to resort to Gundam Idols for their next title.
PS I still think it's Hino's fault.

Regardless of IBO's quality as a show, hopefully it flopping will wake Sunrise up and tell them that Gundam fans don't keep wanting the same retreaded storylines about war, conflict, and everything else often found in UC Gundam shows and come up with something completely new for the franchise.
Good idea. They can just slap a Gundam label on the next Cross Ange.Regardless of IBO's quality as a show, hopefully it flopping will wake Sunrise up and tell them that Gundam fans don't keep wanting the same retreaded storylines about war, conflict, and everything else often found in UC Gundam shows and come up with something completely new for the franchise.
lol no it wont

Well it's not like pure fanservice shows sell that great either. I guess the success recipe is to create show that doesn't have extensive fanservice to drive away mainstream but still enough material to have people to imagine those scenes in their heads lol.

They don't need to, Cross Ange was Gundam without being called such and it ended up doing better than G-Reco.

They had a good thing on their hands with Gundam Build Fighters then went stupid in the second season.Regardless of IBO's quality as a show, hopefully it flopping will wake Sunrise up and tell them that Gundam fans don't keep wanting the same retreaded storylines about war, conflict, and everything else often found in UC Gundam shows and come up with something completely new for the franchise.
False. If anything, I think this could make them go for an even more traditional AU Gundam next time. With the basic "average civilian boy is involved in conflict, stumbles in prototype Gundam and fights to protect the people close to him" plot from the original Gundam which was avoided by 00 and IBO. AGE used it, but it wasn't aiming at the same audience and completely failed at reaching anyone, while G-Reco was basically just for Tomino fans.

Creating appealing characters is not just about providing opportunity for porn, whether explicit or implicit.
No, it didn't. Cross Ange sold an average of 6402 per volume while G-Reco sold an average of 8612 per volume.
You know they're talking about IBO, right?
The amount of people just voting OPM kills me.
Why? It's the kind of show that would appeal to people who watch 1-2 shows a year.

I don't think OPM deserves AotY. Not by a long shot. Seeing all the, "I just watched OPM" feels like salt in the wound. Not that I'm taking it too seriously, but if OPM wins it'll be enough to irritate me for a second.
OPM just doesn't mean anything. It's a fun show with amazing visuals, which is fine, but when you compare it to Shirobako, Oregairu, or any of the other big contenders for AotY it just seems out of place.
People recommend Hunter X Hunter is because of the recent tv series which is 2011 - 2014 and also cover more chapters.
the 2011 series covers everything and is generally what people recommend.
HxH 2011-2014 covers the most so I would go with that.
Consensus ? Ha, more like, never ending debate over which of the two is better.
The 1999 series is better, at least out of what I've seen.
If you prefer we can just gather the animegaf student council Illuminati and do it Giantbomb GOTY style and argue until there is a unanimous winner for 20 hours.

What makes the 1999 series better, in your opinion?
So if I were to tell you that Oregairu is dogshit and doesn't deserve to lick the boot of OPM even, what then?
Vote for your own shows and be done with it. If other GAFfers happened to enjoy OPM and perhaps only OPM then so be it. It's not the list of AnimeGAF but all of GAF willing to participate.
How do those shows mean more than another show?

Or you could have an adult discussion instead of making some hyperbolic comparison. I don't think I ever said OPM was dog shit, I said it was out of place. Obviously, it doesn't really matter who wins. It's a popularity contest and OPM is a popular show. I'm just stating my personal opinion - much like the people voting OPM.
I wouldn't exactly call this "flopping", even if it doesn't match the heights of SEED or 00. And thinking that fans don't want the sort of thing they've seen before wouldn't be the right lesson to take from this, because Gundam the Origin is selling incredibly well.

While my experience with UC Gundam is only second hand, I don't get comparing it to IBO. Isn't the main focus of the original show on the conflict between two major forces in open warfare? That's completely different from IBO.
