I'm not surprised that a Gundam show full of merciless mobile suit fights and kids machine-gunning other kids isn't a ratings smash. I can see how its plain character designs wouldn't pull in viewers either, but its actual storyline has been a largely joyless, tragic affair thus far.

They should concentrate all their efforts on what works. which is Cross Ange of course. duh

IBO isn't terrible, but it's clearly not winning AOTY or even coming close so I wouldn't say that it's a Japanese poor taste problem here since even GAF doesn't seem to be rating it too highly. I just think the show isn't that interesting. Gundam usually has political intrigue or character drama but here the main characters are pretty much exactly where they were in the beginning and the political stuff is completely background noise at this point. The romance is terrible (how old is Kudelia supposed to be 15? Why is she acting like she's never kissed a guy in her life?), and this human debris stuff isn't as cool as they think it is. Didn't G Reco do the same thing with a part of humanity treated as sub-human? It's getting pretty played out tbh. The show is by no means bad, but it's nothing to write home about either.

IBO's numbers are far worse when you consider that it was half off and bundled with a game.

Not to mention how abysmal the TV ratings are. It's probably the biggest flop for Sunrise since Age.

Gundam fans don't know how to react to a show that's actually good.

Well things are building up like Char is obviously going to pull a coup and shit is going to sidewise with Fumitan backstabbing everybody.

It's a very lowkey sort of show that doesn't constantly excel and is a slow burn type of affair which is unusual for Gundam.

Holy crap is Concrete Revolutio really good. Yes the non chronological storytelling can be a hit or miss for some but damn does it make the viewing experience an enjoyable ride and warrants good discussion. I'm currently on episode 12 and I can happily say the non chronological storytelling works efficiently in conveying the themes the series tries to build upon. Heck I'm surprised on how everything so far is progressing in a consistent manner with each episodic episode connecting together.

I can safely say that so far everyone should watch Concrete Revoultio. I recommend people to watch it because so far Bones have done a great job. It's definitely going to be in my top 10 AOTY list. It's a better superhero show than OPM, yes I know they are different but still.

It's not easily predictable, otherwise more anime would be doing whatever it is that makes things sell. But it does boil down to a core concept: characters. Not character development, but having characters you can fawn over, fantasize about, draw fan art of, etc. All my experience with people who are heavily into purchasing Japanese anime releases leads me to believe that that is what will make a series sell, whether it is Sword Art Online or UtaPri.

Yeah. Obviously it's pretty hard to create well selling show or otherwise all shows would be hits. Still it sometimes makes me sad. At least some great shows once in a while sell great.

Looks like Sunrise have to resort to Gundam Idols for their next title.

PS I still think it's Hino's fault.

They just need to resurrect SEED. It would print money.

It's about whether the audience can fap/slick and by how much.

Well it's not like pure fanservice shows sell that great either. I guess the success recipe is to create show that doesn't have extensive fanservice to drive away mainstream but still enough material to have people to imagine those scenes in their heads lol.

Regardless of IBO's quality as a show, hopefully it flopping will wake Sunrise up and tell them that Gundam fans don't keep wanting the same retreaded storylines about war, conflict, and everything else often found in UC Gundam shows and come up with something completely new for the franchise.

Good idea. They can just slap a Gundam label on the next Cross Ange.

Well SEED and Destiny are the best selling shows since the original sooo....

Creating appealing characters is not just about providing opportunity for porn, whether explicit or implicit.

I wouldn't exactly call this "flopping", even if it doesn't match the heights of SEED or 00. And thinking that fans don't want the sort of thing they've seen before wouldn't be the right lesson to take from this, because Gundam the Origin is selling incredibly well.

They don't need to, Cross Ange was Gundam without being called such and it ended up doing better than G-Reco.

No, it didn't. Cross Ange sold an average of 6402 per volume while G-Reco sold an average of 8612 per volume.

If anything, I think this could make them go for an even more traditional AU Gundam next time with the basic "average civilian boy is involved in conflict, stumbles in prototype Gundam and fights to protect the people close to him" plot from the original Gundam that was avoided by 00 and IBO. AGE used it, but it wasn't aiming at the same audience and completely failed at reaching anyone, while G-Reco was basically just for Tomino fans.

I think they should do a Gundam Seed style retelling of Turn A. I think that would sell. It has a very strong cast, crossdreessing (gotta hit all those markets), romance, action, pretty much everything. They'd probably have to do 2 seasons or cut it down slightly but I think it would be possible.

Turn A turn...Turn A turn...Turn AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

They had a good thing on their hands with Gundam Build Fighters then went stupid in the second season.

I still hate Yuuma to this day.

False.

AGE reached me.

While my experience with UC Gundam is only second hand, I don't get comparing it to IBO. Isn't the main focus of the original show on the conflict between two major forces in open warfare? That's completely different from IBO.

I can safely say that Bones has had a great year.

Kekkai Sensen
Snow White and the Red Hair
Concrete Revoultio

And it seems like it's going to continue over in 2016. So hopefully no more shitty anime original curse for them.

Edit: I forgot Show by Rock

Why? It's the kind of show that would appeal to people who watch 1-2 shows a year.

I don't think OPM deserves AotY. Not by a long shot. Seeing all the, "I just watched OPM" feels like salt in the wound. Not that I'm taking it too seriously, but if OPM wins it'll be enough to irritate me for a second.

OPM just doesn't mean anything. It's a fun show with amazing visuals, which is fine, but when you compare it to Shirobako, Oregairu, or any of the other big contenders for AotY it just seems out of place.

The amount of people just voting OPM kills me.

I found it meh but it honestly doesn't matter if lots of people choose to vote for OPM. Yes it's probably going to snub a lot of other good series but does that really matter. What matters is that you show your support for the series you believe is good and that you enjoyed it for what it's worth.

So if I were to tell you that Oregairu is dogshit and doesn't deserve to lick the boot of OPM even, what then?

Vote for your own shows and be done with it. If other GAFfers happened to enjoy OPM and perhaps only OPM then so be it. It's not the list of AnimeGAF but all of GAF willing to participate.

If you prefer we can just gather the animegaf student council Illuminati and do it Giantbomb GOTY style and argue until there is a unanimous winner for 20 hours.

People recommend Hunter X Hunter is because of the recent tv series which is 2011 - 2014 and also cover more chapters.

the 2011 series covers everything and is generally what people recommend.

HxH 2011-2014 covers the most so I would go with that.

I see. Thanks!

Consensus ? Ha, more like, never ending debate over which of the two is better.

So there's a debate? Hm.

The 1999 series is better, at least out of what I've seen.

What makes the 1999 series better, in your opinion?

Or you could have an adult discussion instead of making some hyperbolic comparison. I don't think I ever said OPM was dog shit, I said it was out of place. Obviously, it doesn't really matter who wins. It's a popularity contest and OPM is a popular show. I'm just stating my personal opinion - much like the people voting OPM.

How do those shows mean more than another show?

They literally have more meaning. Shirobake portrays the at times incomprehensible shifts between beauty and tragedy that life holds. Oregairu hits the heart of what it is to be in love at that stage in life and the awkwardness of friendship. Yuri Kuma is entirely a thought piece - it has more meaning than probably any show this year. One Punch Man is a satire of action series, combining gag comedy and superb animation. Interesting, awesome, fun to watch, but not nearly as much meaning. It doesn't make OPM any worse inherently, but again, it feels out of place.

But, again, I'm not trying to discuss the merit of OPM just the single vote.

I voted Fafner Exodus as my AOTY and in 5 pages there was only a single nomination other then myself, not even some honorable mentions. It's probably not even going to be in a Top 30 at this point, but who cares. I see this more of a way to show more people this even exists and maybe some lucky fellows will decide to check it out.

Certainly it does kind of bother me...the people who only watch one show and then vote for it (just as it bothers me about the single game players who do similarly) rather than folks who sampled a range of what the medium had to offer and then offered a thoughtful vote on that range. Kind of makes me wish a minimum was enforced. Not 10. But maybe 5 or even 3.

For people that aren't taking it seriously because it totally doesn't matter and you don't care about it at all you sure are spending a lot of time complaining about it and trying to limit people from voting in it.

If I had to guess why Origin is selling well it's most likely because it's an adaptation of a manga set directly in UC with a focus on the original Gundam story with characters like Char.

I'd be shocked if that didn't sell well.

But it's less fans wanting the exact same thing and more fans wanting lesser versions of the same thing with a few new spins and twists.

No, it didn't. Cross Ange sold an average of 6402 per volume while G-Reco sold an average of 8612 per volume.

Oh really? Well maybe there is some hope then.

There's a little bit more to it than that.

The conflict between the Federation and Zeon was important, yes. But what was also important was Amuro growing from selfish, arrogant brat to soldier, him dealing with the metaphysical with his status as a Newtype, Char's entire character and his relationship with Sayla and the Zeon, etc.

What my point is that many Gundam shows (and along with that, Sunrise) have been in a creative rut for a long time now. By the end of their shows, no matter how different they initially seem, they always end up going back to the same point as standard UC shows go, and I feel that by the time IBO finishes, it's going to end up doing the same.
