Apart from having bizarrely ugly character models (the eyes especially look 'odd' in my opinion), bland companions and a completely forgettable storyline, not helped by it using reams of terminology that has me scratching my head trying to remember what is what (and, seriously, who really enjoys reading dozens of notes to flesh out the storyline?), this game is otherwise an adequate my-first-RPG. I admit that I've been enjoying exploring the three or four large open maps I've discovered during my 30+ hour playthrough so far. Also, I keep wanting to come back to it to finish it so there is definitely something there.
I just wish more effort had been put into making interesting companions and a compelling story. The framework is there, it's just that the writing, the lack of any kind of moral system (I literally loot anything even in front of NPCs without any consequences) and the tedious need to read countless notes just makes this an average RPG. In my opinion, it is best to just play this as an action game and just ignore the story altogether. As an RPG the game feels half-baked in my experience.
My score so far is 6/10. Easily Obsidian's weakest RPG yet in my opinion. Was this made by an inexperienced B team at Obsidian or something? The quality of their other games simply isn't there in Avowed.
