Heavy Rain falls in the Lower Main land of BC has resulted in Major flooding. The main highways from the area have been washed away.
This is the Trans-Canada high way.

As someone who lives next to a body of water, this is scary. It's really important to update the floodmaps with climate change and all. There are many deaths already.

I'd never live beside water.

Sometimes you see people with those beach homes literally on the fucking 40 ft up the beach. Begging to be flooded with big waves.

Yup, that's just across the border from us, we got significant flooding here in northwest Washington as well. Pretty wild.

In the central part of Vancouver Island we got tons of flooding here but nothing like Abbotsford. Our place is at the top of a hill so we're good for now but the street a block or two away was submerged (it not that near the water either but it's a local minima I guess).

The road between us and Victoria washed out and now it's only open to one way traffic, switching ever 30 minutes while they try and fix it. Must be a nightmare to get through there.

Makes me feel so much better when I got the survey result of my area vs. flooding danger. Was basically one big 'lol, nope'.

I’m in Chilliwack and highways have been closed in both directions since a Monday. None of the side roads are open either, literally stuck here. Hopefully the roads are open soon as the grocery stores are empty
Yup also in chilliwack. Not a single way in or out. Ive got supplies to last a bit, but i hear the stores are bare, and a rumor superstore got smashed up. I don't even wanna try going to one in the madness.

Atleast the pump station is holding, for now

Sumas lake is trying to make a return.

For those that dont know the area to well, there used to be a lake between abbotsford and chilliwack. In the 20s They drained it for the farm land, built dikes and canals. It has one of the busiest pumping stations in north america keeping the water out. They have been talking about the water flooding the pump station forcing a shut down. This would lead to even more catastrophic flooding.

300 people showed up and built a sandbag dam around it last night.

We pay taxes to have the shittiest water drainage system ever...

Yes, it's from flood plain studies for climate change. How stupid do you think I am?
I don't know you, I don't think you are stupid at all. Then again I'm in the middle of renovating my apartment and the workers thought I will not notice the bath screen cannot fold completely due to where they put the faucet even thought I pay them 30 000€.

You live in amsterdam right?!

Jup this is a picture that presents how my city will look like if you remove water defenses.

Rain is a real issue as u can't really defend yourself against it with water walls or other defenses. However a good solution for a massive ton of rain is farmland.

Stuff like this

Here's another good example of water defense solution in a city form, there are huge defense systems u can't see in place behind all that water in the back that prevents the sea from killing that city as what u see there isn't the sea but a lake.

Here's the sea defense system making sure that height water and storm water isn't increasing the lake volumes but still connects the two whenever its good weather for water life.

images

Left sea , right lake.

Also high weights are designed to control water, even train rails and lakes are created over infrastructure to flush out height amounts of water from critical area's fast. Specially when ground can't soak stuff anymore. Also lots of green area's that all absorb water. and infastructure that transports water if needed. + flood area's that are specifically designed to take the hit if everything else fails.

Those pictures are blowing my mind… how is there enough strutual support to support that amount of water + pressure and displacement from ships without being blown apart? The fact tunnels go right under it makes it seems like it can’t be that deep or thick have that thick of walls, yet a large boat is going down it??? So confused.

its not deep, but deep enough for any ship to go through and wide enough to deal with huge amounts of volumes of water.

Insane how many jobs this impacts from a logistics standpoint. I know I'll be losing some money until supply routes are fixed. Construction will come to a screeching halt in some areas, I've already noticed an impact just in the past few days.

There’s people committed to natural disasters as the world becomes more heated every year, it’s harder to trust bridges, dams, icebergs.

Off you have kids, you might have got the same email as me a few hours ago from the the school district:

“We received information today that highway one will remain closed for next week and perhaps longer, with Highway 7 via Agassiz open for emergency use only. We understand that some staff may not be able to reach their work site due to road closures and evacuation alerts. Based on our analysis, we will continue with school closures in Chilliwack”

Hwy-1 closed for another week? Oh man.
