Bad Animation in Wrestling games?

Why is the animation in wrestling games so bad across the board?
In comparison fighting games like Soul Calibur2 have perfect life like animation.

Wrestling games have more things on screen than 1 on 1 fighting games? Games like Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter can have smooth animation because they don't have a whole lot on screen most of the time. Wrestling games these days have 4 or more wrestlers on screen plus a crowd, play by play, weapons, an interactive environment, ect.

Its interesting that you bring this, but ecomonically speaking, a developer would save more money having motion capture done rather than resorting to key-framing. In fact, key-framed animation have more negatives to it than motion capture, but unfortunately some developers like to play cheap.

One we do know, its good we have developers like Sony, Namco and Capcom who invest greatly in the potential for motion capture.

Because AKI ruled TEH WORLD back in the N64 days. No mercy is still the greatest wrestling game ever and the animations in the game were top notch for the most part.

Also, wrestling games have far more animations needed than stright fighters since there's more interaction, more wrestlers and more unique moves in total.

Not true. Acclaim used motion captures back in the N64 days whereas AKI did it frame-by-frame. Look how much better the AKI games were in the animation department.

Wrestling games need a whole new change of a direction they haven't evolved in 10 years...

THQ need a whole new change of a direction they haven't evolved in 10 years...

The amount of the characters on screen have no say in whether or not a developer can use motion capture or not. Some developers just don't want to use it because they're cheap. In all situations, motion capture delivers a better pipeline if you want to really want authentic human motion.

I was talking about things that take up RAM not what type of animation is used anyway. You can have choppy motion captured animation if you throw enough characters on screen.

But wrestling games don't NEED authentic human motion, because wrestling has nothing to do with that! The games need, more than anjything else, to have a sense of impact in the moves and a sense of actual pain. While it might make it more "realistic" if they use motion capture, it is better if they are able to design animation for each specific move and wrestler type that will actually give a cohesive feel.

They're just too lazy to do their research and actually put some effort into making a WRESTLING game, instead too focused on the flash and match types. It doesn't matter if it is motion capture or not, it's still crappy when they clearly don't give a shit.

Yeah, motion capture SUCKS for wrestling games for the most part. Compare No Mercy with WWF Attitude and tell me which one has the better animation.

but sometimes it can look like shit

see: WM21

And Raw 1 &2, Legends of Wrestling 1 through 3, hell every single 3D Acclaim wrestling game, and WCW Mayhem.

Motion capture sucks for wrestling games, that's a proven fact. 2 of the best wrestling game developers AKI(VPW1 & 2, No Mercy) and Spike(Fire Pro, King of Colosseum) did not use motion capture because it cheapens the overall experience. You wanna see the Shining Wizard just like Mutoh does it, not some knock off mo cap animation done by Nova or some other jobber. Wrestlers have unique mannerisms and ways of doing their moves, which is something that doesn't translate well in motion capture.

KOCII says to GTFO =) No Mercy's animation were excellent stuff though. I would still love to play the game if I could. KOCII and even ASPWIII are above them though for this generation.

didn't tobias or someone else from gigante also complain at how badly the mocap looked when actually put in-game and mention they had to do a crapload of fixing to make it 'look right' or something? (and apparently, it still doesn't look right!)
