That would be sweet, but:

I think the narrator is actually telling the story to Zia. At least that's how it sounded on a few occasions. Maybe they could have had Zia narrate the story on NG+ as if she was telling it to her child, or something. Haha
He definitely is during some parts. I think he is during the final level but I don't remember for sure.

Basically from what I gather
if you do the restart ending the calamity will always happen and the evacuate ending is pretty much the real ending and leaves it open for a 2nd game

This is why I went with the restart ending first since it just seemed logical and a good explanation for New Game Plus as history repeats itself. I saving the evacuation ending for my second playthrough.

Anyways it would have been cool if they forced you to take the restart ending on your first playthrough and the evac ending was an option only on your second playthrough.

He definitely addresses her directly in the final parts of the game, but it's difficult to tell if he's talking to her before that point. Probably is. I'd like to think so, anyway. It's a cool way to relate the characters together.

I really love the cast of characters that Supergiant put together with this game. The game isn't exhausted with superfluous character development and each character has a unique and interesting back plot. A great cast that I would love to see a sequel for, following the
evacuation ending.

Going through New Game+ now and in hearing it a second time it's clear now he's been speaking to Zia all along. For example, the part where The Kid first meets Zia, Ruck says "I'm sure you remember this part". At first I thought he was talking to The Kid because him meeting Zia is a memorable experience for him. But now it's clear it's because Ruck is telling the story to Zia

He name drops her a lot in the final level too. He's definitely telling it to her.

just finished the game for the 1st time, I enjoyed it, pretty cool little game, as far as the ending:
I chose to carry Zulf outta there and restore the Bastion, like it seems most everyone else did. The Zulf decision was pretty easy as he seemed like a good dude that was just pissed off for good reason, and besides I was tired of carrying around the damn battering ram and was hoping I would be escorting Zulf instead of carrying his ass around.

As far as restoring I felt a little bad for slaughtering all 1,000 people and animals who were "in the right" for protecting their lands, cores, shards. I also didn't want my actions to be all for nothing.

For weapon choices I used the War Machete and Breaker Bow exclusively until about the end when I switched to Machete and
Bazooka Thing that Rucks gives you
. Mainly just used the Bow's Power Shot on anything and diced some of the close range encounters up with the Machete. I didn't really use the Special Attacks very much at all.

Fine start to the Summer of Arcade.

1. Just found out if you press Y while in the Bastion it zooms out. Never knew that on my first playthrough. Not a big deal, just kind of cool to see the entire thing.

2. Question about the save system and endgame spoilers

So I REALLY loved the part where you carry Zulf out so much that I want to do it again on NG+ Is there anyway to carry Zulf out, perhaps restart the 360, and then have it revert back?

I wish this game had save slots. I want to see if the ending would be different if you Save Zulf and Evacuate or Leave him and evacuate. Same with Save/Leave and Restore.

I didn't get the popup for it until my second playthrough. Maybe it's (slightly) bugged?

I didn't get a popup. Sort of accidentally found out.

Also, I'm at the "Ordinary Campsite" right now. Just listening to the narrator hum.... I can't leave yet...

I saw the pop-up for the zoom out feature the first time through, but I forgot about using it really...

Anyway, just finished it! Ending is as grand as others have said.
I choose to carry Zulf, which was a haunting couple of minutes and the best part of the game. When the ninjas stop fighting you and let you through instead...powerful stuff. Incidentally as I'm writing about it, it's sort of like That moment in Children of Men(you'll know what I mean if you've seen it). I also chose to evacuate...not sure why, but I did. I think there was a vague attraction to the sense of accepting reality and living with the consequences of one's actions.

Finally pulled the trigger! Got the Maw free as well; nice offer.

Question: When exactly do you save? I don't really want to do an hour of stuff and not have it recorded.

edit- That Swery thing is pretty sweet.

the narrator is definitely talking to
zia the entire game. he specifically says "this is why i'm telling you this, zia" during the final level and at the beginning he says "no ma'am" after asking a rhetorical question about the kid. essentially the entire game is a flashback from the time the kid wakes up until he goes to the tazal terminals (because the narrator speaks as though he's not sure whats really happening between him and zulf).

I think it saves every time you see a load screen, essentially. It's invisible to the player as far as I saw.

Finished my second play through today. Such an incredible game. It's just one of those games that you makes you feel great to play.

Still haven't finished it, taking my time with this beautiful gem, if it's not a spoiler could someone tell me what are those landscapes down there on the background? Isn't the world "gone"? I'm so confused by that.

I don't think the whole entire world is gone, but rather the world is just REALLY damaged.

Man, it is only like 3 songs in the entire game with lyrics but they are so great. Starting in NG+, it is clear that Rucks is telling the story to Zia as the Kid is out at the ura's temple where zulf is at. The story is really well done, told in flashback methodology. I chose to save zulf and having them attack me, I thought I would die but then they stopped shooting, fantastic job.

Also, when you hear Zia talk, actually talk, it was refreshing and took be back abit. I also evacuated the city because that is what I felt was needed to be done. The past is in the past, life would just repeat itself.

Also, it doesn't need to be said but the art if so FUCKING FANTASTIC, such a beautiful looking game.

Just finished. Pretty good game. I love how they handled the upgrades and all that stuff. It can be pretty annoying in a lot of other games. Music was amazing as well. I however didn't like how the ending was structured.
It could have been amazing, but it was too obvious for me. It was too obvious what the developers intended and too obvious what the "moral" and "logical" answer was. This may sound weird but stay with me here, because it's the sort of situation I remember from an episode of Buffy.

It's an episode where the heroes of the show have been reset into an alternate reality where everything is really shitty. At some point a character is given the option to reset back to what it was before, but of course the character will no longer exist once they do it. The villain asks when the character is about to reset everything, "How do you know that world is better than this one?" and the character responds "It has to be." Now of course you are killing off a bunch of people in this reality and logically it might not be the best thing, but as a viewer you are in touch with the emotional response, and you don't care about the unintended consequences. Bastion didn't succeed at that at all for me.

I sat there and thought, "resetting will just create a feedback loop so all those people who I could be saving will just die in the exact same way, so I'll just move on (as so many people say when bad things happen) and do what Zia wants essentially." It would have been sweet to make that decision to reset in a moment of emotional desperation, and then do new game+ with the realization that I made the wrong choice, but I get another chance and I can fix it. It would be like actually going through the calamity all over again but this time I have a connection to it as a player instead of just starting the game with zero background.

That being said i'm going to read through the thread to see if others had the same experience or if the ending worked for them.

I keep getting deeper into the game and it is locking my GOTY spot up so fast.

This is a game design wet dream. I don't think I've found one thing really wrong with it yet. It's fucking amazing. This needs to be on PC DD services now so more people can enjoy it.

The way it blends the best from certain genres amazes me. Bullet-hell shooter lite, RPG elements, adjustable difficulty, parrying and counter-combos from fighting games.... my goodness.

If everyone reading this thread has a 360 and doesn't have (or has not intention of purchasing) Bastion, shame on you.

Every time after a loading screen you see this little cogwheel in the lower left corner. That is your indication that it saves.

just bought this game and started playing it. i love it. so charming and it looks beautiful. i like the machete but am not happy with either ranged weapon yet (Bow or gun)

not a fan of the proving grounds or the combat in general. the targeting system sucks too, would have worked better with 8 directions or something.

however, i'm still able to enjoy the game but it's really scraping by on its charm for me. glad it's short, less than 10 hours for 2 play throughs.

way overhyped, imo.

I would have liked a force save on exit from the Bastion itself. My typical "quit an RPG" style is to return to town, shop and upgrade as needed so next time I load up the game I can just go. Here I need to go to a new area to force a save before quitting.

Just a small thing but I've never liked games without some sort of forced save mechanism.

Other than that I LOVE the game. Been having a great time with it.

Who else is not really feeling the combat in this game? The controls are tight and feel fine, but targeting with ranged weapons is often frustrating, and honestly, the enemies just aren't very fun to fight, for me at least.

I'm enjoying the game and continue playing to unravel the mystery of the Bastion, Caelondia, Ura and everything else about this strange world, as well as to see all there is to see of the beautiful art, but the actual running around and hitting things part is not particularly enjoyable for me.

My only problems with the end part of the game:
the ability to jump made combat way worse, because you couldn't do the normal roll anymore. And the battering ram was boring.

Finished it last night, immediately jumped into NG+. I adore this game. From the sound design to the chewy writing to the hand crafted visuals, everything blends to create a comforting, dreamlike atmosphere that's both unique and cohesive. I found the combat mechanics to be snappy and fun, plus gameplay options open up quite nicely as your arsenal grows larger. The weapon, skill and tonic variety is great, I'm getting a lot out of messing around with different combinations and difficulty options now that they're all powered up a bit. And for having such an in-your-face storytelling device as the narrator, Bastion's actual plot is subtly told and quietly affecting. The game doesn't spell things out for you, but there's plenty of backstory to uncover if you go looking for it.

I really don't have many negatives to harp on. The game is not terribly ambitious in terms of level design and the character animations could be more detailed, understandably when you make a game with a small team there's going to be some limitations. There's plenty of content for your $15 outside of the critical path story areas, and perhaps most importantly there are some incredible individual moments tucked inside Bastion that will stay with me for quite a while. One of my favorites of the year so far, bravo Supergiant Games.

Just finished the demo. I like how the narrater is telling you exactly what's going on. Is this for the demo only or what? Pretty cool either way. Will be downloading shortly.

Anyone know where I'm suppose to get the Pecker Nest?

As well as the other Who Knows Wheres? I only have the pipe still and I'm

Anyone else reminded of Radiohead's Paranoid Android from the ending credits song? It sounds a lot like it to me. In a good way :)

Never Leaving the Bastion. Guess the world is fucked.
