Why does it take so long to find a game? The matchmaking in this game seems to go about the process as if it some sort of MMO but it is more a FPS. I don't get why it does not go about it like any other FPS. Seems so artificially implemented to give the guise of being more a MMORPG.

Just found out Marquis, and I suppose Thorn can really cheese incursion. I really hope they expand the upper platform walls to prevent it or that will be that for the incursion mode.

They should really give people 5 min to reconnect and then replace with a bot. Every single match I play is tainted by quitters. The game already has bots, use them. I supposed they are worried about a bot helping the enemy team by being farmed, but that can't be worse than being a man down.

Decided to give this a shot and while I have absolutely no interest at all in the competitive side of it, the campaign is surprisingly charming as hell!

It's very satisfying to see the opinions on Battleborn moving into a positive light. I played the Closed Technical Test and thought Gearbox did a really good job melding shooter and MOBA mechanics and blended an interesting world to boot. Very happy to see people enjoying the beta.

They're like snipers in any other game. The point is not to leave them alone, but if you have things like healers attacking thralls or people getting in slap fights while the "sentry being attacked" light is blinking, that's on that team.

Being able to just peek the tip of your head over the ramp by your sentry, and shoot all the way over to the enemy sentry the entire game is bad map design. The only ways to counter it are to body block shots or to make pretty much a suicide leap into the enemy ramp, dealing with players, minions, and their sentry. Even then the sniper is likely to just run until you die and then continue popping your sentry. A suicide rush to buy you maybe 30-45 seconds is not a viable tactic.

It is bad map design, one that can easily be fixed by decreasing the size of the sentries or expanding the wall behind each ramp. That would make it so that if you want to snipe the sentry you have to go through the tunnels and hold them against a counter attack.

I liked the few games I played, but my biggest problem with the Battleborn beta is that I'd just played the Overwatch beta and greatly preferred it. Of course, I haven't been a multi-player type gamer since the Halo 2 era, so my opinion may well be wrong.

I have to admit that's pretty bad, but I've also never had an enemy team's sniper try it.

Hmm...

Hmm...

I just had a enemy Marquis do it earlier. Pop pop pop. Even alerting my team didn't help. He had only a couple pixels of his head exposed to range attacks. Melee got schwacked trying to get him. It is made more dangerous, I believe, by the MOBA mechanic where if you attack a player near minions or a sentry they target you.

Yeah, melee has it rough in the enemy camp, especially without leveling. I play mostly Marquis but I like going in to support and assault so it never occurred to me to snipe from all the way back. Sounds boring as hell honestly lol

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Played a few matches and enjoyed it more than I expected to, a few thoughts:

-Art style is still horrendous and way too much shit is going on at once. Too many times in a match I have to just sit there and let everything simmer down

-Can already tell game will require way too much grinding for my tastes. Looking at how you unlock characters, like geez. I dont doubt there will be options to outright buy characters when it launches.

-Gearbox humor is still Gearbox humor. Still dont like it, it's particularly frustrating since it invades even the menus now. I just backed out of the fucking loot screen cause I dont need a 4 paragraph monologue on how fucking loot works, Gearbox.

-Seems like the heroes could be better balanced, the sword guy is super frustrating to fight.

-Aiming on the X1 is way too finicky, I have trouble making nearly every shot

Overall I think this would do better with a F2P model, since the grind is already there for the characters and you cant switch mid match.

Matchmaking has been fucking me over badly tonight. Virtually every game me at level 18 or 19 and a bunch of 1-3 level guys against a team where everyone badly outranks my teammates. And I understand level means little, but sure enough most don't have a clue what they are doing. Had two different teammates in different games go 0-20+. Yikes.

I love Oscar Mike though. Hilarious letting my health get low and baiting people into getting obliterated by my air strike.

Played the PS4 beta and wasn't too impressed, but the performance boost on PC makes a big impact. I prefer controller /couch gameplay at this point, and a matchmaking pool balanced around that, so it's a shame that the console versions perform so much worse.

Still liking it a lot, wish you could unlock characters a bit faster, but it seems like you can unlock them by playing the story missions in the full game.

... I actually think I like it better than over watch

Seems ok. Gets really boring when someone on your team quits (every single match I've played) and your team gets rolled. Unlocks seem a little ridiculous too, more akin to F2P. Curious to see how this does sales wise.

-Command Rank needs to be considered in matchmaking
-You need to be able to change characters on the select screen to adjust for team make-up
-Quitting a match needs to penalize the quitter, not the team (need option to join in-progress match, preferably with status info visible)
-Needs a PvE tutorial for match modes
-FOV on console is too small

These are the main issues I have regarding gameplay. Gearbox humor is hit and miss but a few things got legit chuckles (more in the lore and PvP, story is pretty bad in a lot of places, particularly the sentry robots).

Overall though, enjoyed it enough to preorder and hope Gearbox takes note of the feedback they're getting.

I think for me an influential factor here that despite being a 'direct control' moba as you say, it favours the mechanics of shooters more so than MOBAs, in many instances.

If you play league, smite, dota etc the combat in those games is always regulated by range and other properties like rate of fire, etc. The attack speed of characters is always awkward and determined by itemisation, and range of basic attacks is limited and standardised across the cast. Thereby, this makes a lot of the characters in those games play quite similarly, dominantly because their basic attack is near identical. So it's a gradual exchange of powers more than anything else. It's slow in comparison, and less defined by the users accuracy in moment to moment gameplay, and more by specific crucial moments, often focused on coordination rather than individual skill.

I don't feel as though Battleborn is of the same ilk in that regard. From the moment you come into lane, you're often attacking other players. Every moment I'm in the mid area I'm firing off at other players and or supporting team mates in a meaningful way. It's much closer to Smites Joust or Arena type modes, than anything in traditional MOBAs, but even then the pacing is drastically different, and I think sufficiently so to justify it's space in the market.

Orcs Must die looks neat but I think there's some merit to Battleborn being an FPS in honesty. Of course their are disadvantages of that and Gearbox would do well to address some of these (like making it clearer when you're being attacked) but I think it makes combat much more viceral than anything in Orcs Must Die, Smite, or even Paragon.

That's just my take though.
You make some good points, though for my money this still isn't nearly as intense as 'real' shooters or even a lot of other direct-control MOBAs like Guilty Gear 2 or Awesomenauts, which have a similar feeling of constant player vs. player combat but at a way faster and more aggressive pace. I understand why the shooting needs to be slowed down versus a COD or whatever, it's a MOBA and you can't have everything dying instantly, but you still have a lot of characters here who simply feel kind of lousy to shoot with. It's better than most MOBA's auto-attacking for sure though, I agree with you there.

The first-person view is in the end more of a hindrance IMO. It does add some immersion, but the penalty is melee combat is super messy for both attacker and defender. I don't know if third person would have worked here, but even at the widest FOV I often feel I can't tell what's going on near me.

But the biggest problem I'm having so far is the one-lane nature of the map seems to make snowballing absurdly effective. I don't think I've seen a single comeback after the first sentry is destroyed, and it's routine for me to encounter complete blow-out matches 100-0 (or more often 0-100, to be real). I know the game is new to people, but unless I'm missing something obvious there's not a lot of obvious counter-play like there is in other MOBAs. The 'dragon' Thrall minions in the middle are really easy to get to and the already pushing lane has ready access to them without losing their momentum.

My thoughts:

This game is really fun when everyone is in game doing their thing and no one randomly quits. I only played one match of Meltdown but I just wasn't feeling it so I played only Incursion. I'll probably give Meltdown another chance when the game comes out but Incursion is the perfect mode for me. I also didn't try story as I didn't want to spoil myself. The Gearbox style humor is surprisingly tame and barely relies on internet humor. The FPS is ok. I've already played enough 30 fps shooters to where I'm used to it. It could be higher but right now It's good enough. I do wish the FOV was pulled back a little especially when your playing as melee characters. There's lots of character variety and I like art style. I was able to main Miko, Phoebe, and Reyna. Phoebe is my current fav. I really think this game has a lot going for it. It's itching that MOBA itch I haven't felt since playing LoL years ago.

The characters look and sound terrible and there's way too much visual clutter. Between that and the usual flat Gearbox gunplay I'm having a hard time enjoying it tbh

FYI you can change it so when you level up in game to make it so hitting the button to bring up the choices a toggle instead of having to hold it, makes it easier to move and select your choice and exit out real quick. Really recommend it.

LiQuid!

I proudly and openly admit to wishing death upon the mothers of people I don't like
I've been playing this and I don't have any strong feelings one way or another on its quality, but having played extensively in the Overwatch beta over the last couple months I can say that that game does a much, much better job providing auditory and visual feedback about the flow of its combat. Battleborn is such a confusing game and I think they've gone a bit overboard with the information clutter you're receiving.

I did one of the campaign missions twice (the one where you fight a spider and save ISIC at the end) and it really, really feels like a slog. Both people in my party agreed. It feels very tacked on.

I could see the PVP being fun after getting used to its gameflow and learning the interactions between all its heroes a little more, but it left a really bad first impression. Didn't help that my team lost all 6 or 7 of the games I played (and they weren't even close, most ended 100-0 in the sentry mode or 500-100ish in the incinerator mode). I also had some pretty severe performance issues even with all my settings turned down as low as possible, but admittedly I have a pretty shitty PC. I still run Overwatch flawlessly at near max settings.

I see the potential in a half-way point between a class/hero shooter a la TF2/Overwatch and full blown MOBA a la Smite/Paragon, so I went in really wanting to enjoy my time with this. I'll be giving it another try tomorrow with more friends but unfortunately nothing about this so far has given any of my gaming group a reason to anticipate it.

It's intimidating since it just throws you in without a tutorial but you learn the basics pretty fast.

Not really i played Dota 2 a lot i know how mobas work but this? Such a visual mess all around terrible characters, screen clutter the FoV at 100 is still a mess those weapons and arms clutter up the screen nearly 50% off it etc on the heels of being released during the open beta for Overwatch well good luck with that.

FoV I see. The game gets chaotic with the clutter but the thing is, and maybe it's just me, but I can see through it? Like it doesn't bother me like it does everyone else. And I'm playing on console using melee characters.

I feel the same way. The only "good" thing about the game is that the shooting movement and camera are more free/natural than in Smite or Paragon

Last question: all of the "equipment" that you pick up at the end of story missions are basically items that you have to use shards to activate during both co op and PvP matches, right? You make a load out and then choose if and when to activate your buffs? Is there anything else to it? Any more permanent aspects rather than temporary buffs?

That's exactly it. There aren't more permanent aspects, and I think it's a good idea, or more veteran people would have advantage over new players.

Oh, I didn't know there were bots. Then you are right, it would be a good idea to replace them with bots.

I think it's the best thing they have done, the melding of shooter and MOBA. I like how they didn't transplanted the classic MOBA into a fps, they just took the general ideas, like tug-of-war style of fight, minion waves you have to attend, a small side of economic part (scrap, gear and deployables) and reimagined them in their own modes.

-Can already tell game will require way too much grinding for my tastes. Looking at how you unlock characters, like geez. I dont doubt there will be options to outright buy characters when it launches.

I don't think there is going to have an option to buy characters. I would also like to have the heroes directly available, but the grind isn't so high. I estimate in 25-30 hours you should unlock most of them. Some of them will unlock with playing the 4 hour campaign, others winning just 5 times with a faction (which comprises of 5 characters), etc.

But I'm sure they will have paid skins, because the present "free" skins are super lame, just very basic recoloring ones. So I suppose the proper skins who really change their aspect will be in micro-dlcs or something like that.

-Seems like the heroes could be better balanced, the sword guy is super frustrating to fight.
He is fine.

So guys tell me about the Mobaish mode. That's what i'm mostly interested in.

It's called Meltdown.

-Two lanes instead of three.
-No proper towers as roadblocks in the lane.
-They are shorter lanes, they don't extend all the way from your base to the enemy's base. In fact they start being very short, and once you reach half of the needed score, they extend a little more (but still not up to the bases).
-No final objective of destroying the enemy base, you win when you reach 500 points of score (you are given points when your minions reach their goal).
-The lanes are pretty close, you need just a few seconds to switch lanes.
-No jungle with camps, but there are some small and big crystals to destroy to earn credits.
-No shop system, but you can spend your credits to activate a series of pre-selected passive buffs and to buy and upgrade deployables in set places in the map (a mini tower in the middle of the lane, a supply station that heals you a bit on the back, another station that speed ups your minions, etc). They can be destroyed by the enemy, and pretty easily.
-You can back to base like in LoL/Smite.
-You level up from 1 to 10. I think the game is a bit more lenient and "feeding" the enemy team is bad, but not as bad as in classic mobas, they don't win as much power.
-A nifty trick to finish: each wave has a big minion and a group of small ones. He gives a buff to shields (overshield) to everyone who is close (including yourself) in specific places where he will activate it. Useful to have an edge for the fights.

edit: I think it's interesting that the other mode, Incursion, is only 1 lane so it feels less like a MOBA but... actually it has some elements from it not present in Meltdown. In Incursion you have to reach and destroy the enemy base (well the guardian), so the lane extend up to that point, there is a forward guardian who dishes out a lot of damage which is basically a tower, and there are neutral camps to defeat to gain an advantage.

Man in meltdown I feel like I'm really helping, and a lot of the time single-handedly delivering minions to the enemy base, but my score is always kinda low. Do I suck?

Oscar Mike Napalm grenade plus Thorns AoE slow wrecks bot waves in seconds. I imagine there are several such combinations. Every lane should have one.

You can ignore the score, it's just (kills x 2) + assists, it doesn't contemplate deaths, or minion kills, or objectives, or scrap or anything else.

Edit: Galilea is <3 <3. Her stun should be nerfed to 1.5 seconds.

I had a game yesterday where I went 25 and 3, was constantly pushing minions and we still lost.

I don't think my soul has ever ached so much.

Very disappointed open beta progress doesn't carry over to retail, the grinding in this game just to unlock a character is unreal. If this were F2P, I'd feel better about it, but since it's not it's very disheartening.
