Battlefield 2042 | Review Thread

Mate battlefield 4 was a fucking shit show compared to this. I had to restart the campaign 3 times because it kept wiping my save file near the end.

The Multiplayer was a laggy disaster for the first 12 months, and it constantly crashed altogether. Half the menu didn't even work properly either.

Don't compared bf4 after about 3 years of constant fixes to this day 1 because it's not a fair match up.
You’re right in that comparing BF4 to this isn’t a fair match up, point taken.

The difference for me is that at least BF4 was salvageable. The foundation of 2042 is just broken and it doesn’t know what it is, for it to be a good Battlefield game, they are going to need to go back to the drawing board with some of the bigger design decisions and rethink what it is they want this game to be.

This is a game that feels designed by people working from home over the last couple of years. I know that this is likely the case but there is barely any cohesion between any of its elements.

Mate. I played through it campaign in 1 sitting because it kept deleting my save files.

I played in actual closet beta(when this word still meant something) on PS3 with missing textures.

Still had more fun, still was a better game than this POS is now or will ever be.

Opinions seem to be all over the place on this one.
$70 is too steep for a game in this state. Hopefully shit gets ironed out and a price drop hits.

Im wondering why they even tried to squeeze Portal Mode into this game? Portal should be its own release with its own fully dedicated resources. Seems its just a way to try to entice old time Battlefield fans - but realistically looking at it - its going to take them a long time to release an adequate amount of maps to make it worthwhile. 2 maps per game is so weak. I was hoping once they announced singleplayer was dropped this game would have the highest map count of any BF ever.

Anybody comparing this to the launch of BF4 either didn't play BF4 at launch or has the worst memory in the world. BF4 was completely broken at launch and MP wasn't fixed to be able to actually play it consistently for a month.

I'm surprised to be very happy with the core of the game as a long time BF fan. There have been some connectivity bugs and I don't like the end of match crap but that's not that big of a deal. You're playing a game where you can paradrop a tank on top of a skyscraper/grappling hook all over/do other BF shit so if the end of match screen breaks your feeling of realism and that stuff doesn't, it's more of a you problem.

That being said they absolutely need to get going on adding more maps (after getting other things ironed out first) but seeing how BF4 recovered from the worst online launch of any game I've experienced, I have faith.

BF4 had technical problems. Lots of them.
But gameplay, game mechanics, UI, presentation, etc, was very good.
All that Dice had to do was fix the bugs.
BF 2042 not only has technical problems, but it also has problems with gameplay, UI, sound, voices, presentation, game mechanics, etc.
This will be much harder to fix, than BF4. But the main problem, is that Dice seems to not want to fix most of this.

You couldn’t even play BF4 for about two weeks after launch. That’s a pretty big technical problem! And as far as getting things fixed you can’t just throw a patch together in a couple days! As we all know if you don’t test first it can make things worse.
If you don’t like being part of squishing bugs you should always wait at least 3 months before you buy a new battlefield game. I don’t mind so I’m in day one

That's not correct. I could play it since launch.
There were many bugs, and latency issues.
But the game was playable from the start.

Can't you read or something? It's not about damn bugs. New BF is broken in its core ffs.

I could play it since launch.
Same.

Theres just so many things pissing me off to no end about this game now. Like firing mode on your weapon, auto vs single shot.

Why would they make the design choice to have this display on the crosshair and not in the corner..... Your cross hair dissapeared when you spring and you suddenly forget what mode you are in. Just so dumb.

I played the beta. Yes it’s about 6 months early. But on PlayStation BF4 was on life support for the first two weeks.
Cant read but I’m really good at sensing things. But I probably shouldn’t share..

Not on PlayStation. Not sure what you played on.

I remember starting off on ps3, had good times. A few months after the ps4 launched I managed to pick one up, "ooo time to upgrade to 64 player next gen Battlefield!".

Pay my ten extra bucks, upgrade and....I'm met with an essentially unplayable mess of a game. The rubber banding was LUDICROUS. It felt like it took months for those issues to be worked out and the game made to a playable state.

I wish I could restart the campaign on 2042. I can't even find it in the menu.

Yeah I started on PS4. What a disaster !! But it got good

It's been a good five or six matches since I've experienced any bugs. The lag can be bad at times though, affecting everything from aiming to moving.

My criticisms are the same I've had of every DICE BF game: their design ideas get in the way of the fun all too often. Can't even go prone in foliage now, it makes your player start hurking and jerking every where. There's even more obfuscation from simple gun fire and small explosions than in previous titles. The visuals from every weapon in vehicles has this annoying blue filter to make it even more difficult to see enemies (why not actual night vision? Or nothing at all?).

I think the map design for conquest is better here than in the previous two entries, that's for sure. Lots of varying elevations, lots of cover, a virtual absence of those artificial-feeling choke points that seemed to exist everywhere in BF1 and BFV. The ability for everyone to call in vehicles and equipment is also cool. I would like more devastation though, there seems to be a measured lack of destructible structures. It's BF, let me blow shit up!

Agreed. I think they will do just fine and the delay was worth it and the free maps vs paid DLC makes more sense to keep the community together vs BF4's situation. With free maps, Portal and cross platform play, I think this will be just fine long term, it just has more going for it long term then BF4 did and BF4 turned out just fine.

The difference for me is that at least BF4 was salvageable. The foundation of 2042 is just broken

Unless you can see the future, how do you know 2042 isn't also salvageable? This is why I don't care for such hot takes, it makes it sound like NOTHING can be done, yet references BF4...one of the worst launches for a BF title and after almost a year of many updates, it turned out to be one of the most beloved BF titles.

So I never fucking make some judgement on shit like this launch day, let alone BEFORE the official large scale launch man. Using that logic I would have never kept up with BF4 and put 400 plus hours in one of my favorite BF titles. No online game is just having some perfect launch with zero issues. I believe they will be just fine and gamers tend ot exaggerate too much.

To add bigger maps cause folks hated small maps
To add a higher player count based on people asking for it
To add back bots
To add back server option

Tells me clearly they are listening, reacting and taking in feed back, to then fucking pretend a fucking scoreboard won't be fixed sounds silly, hyperbolic and exaggerative in comparison.

So....you just don't have much evidence that this won't be fixed or they won't fix it or anything weird like that, you simply want that to be the narrative.

Dice seems to not want to fix most of this.

Just stop man. I get you might want to say differences from BF4 to 2042 at launch and its debatable, but relax with this fake shit like "not want to fix most of this" where the fuck did you read that? What evidence do you have of this?

We literally have updates RIGHT NOW regarding the fucking game, so I've yet to see any comment from DICE like "we not funa fix dis" lol Debate what the launch is sure, but don't lie about stuff like that. It makes it hard to even believe anything else you post when the thing you are saying is so wild, facts simply don't support any of it.

They don't want to fix the game that is currently being updated RIGHT NOW as of today? Ummmm ooooooook, not sure how that works given they are doing the thing you are saying they don't want to do lol

A reminder of how BF4 launched. I forgot about some of those issues as I don't play its single player, but I now recall the whole save corruption thing and other issues. I also forgot about that lawsuit too.

If anything, I want you to look at the comment to see what was being stated in 2013. I love BF4 too bud, but I love what it is now after years of updates, I don't just pretend it was perfect. Its why I disregard MOST of what is being stated about 2042. It was also delayed to skip next gen launch, it also has free maps, it also has Portal. I'm more then fine with what they are doing now and believe they can patch and update this no different then any other BF title. I've never played any BF title that was just broke FOR LIFE or something, BF4 was the worst launch and if it can become a fan favorite after all those updates, give DICE the same respect given regarding BF4 to 2042. Let them polish up the game over time as this is a online game.

Have a good one.

my friend who i played years of BF2, BC2, 1943 and BF4 with came over and finally tried this

he did like the wingsuit tho (as do i). and the plus system . I dont have the grapple hook guy unlocked unfortunately because that was the only other good thing about the beta i played.

As someone who was excited for this the state of the game is super disappointing. BUT the part of me that loves a good game development debacle story is loving every minute of it.

I wanted to try out all of the Breakthrough maps before opining on it. Needs some balancing work. The way it's setup, it's basically just a shooting gallery for the attackers. Poorly designed maps leaves the defenders open to fire from every angle almost all of the time. They allow far too many vehicles as well - it gets messy quick with so many choppers and planes in the air, tons of ground vehicles every place. It feels sloppy.

f you want dumb action and easy kills to bump your level quickly it's the way to go (one map as an attacker I had over 50 kills and over 80 assists with just three deaths - I gained like three levels in one go and unlocked all kinds of rewards just from that one match). But I warn you, it's truly not fun. I'll stick with Conquest until they can sort that out.

Like every other BF game, the cheaters are out in force once it's "late night" hours for the US. Seen some absolutely wild cheats while merely spotting with a recon drone. Dudes Supermanning it with tanks, basically walking through their barrages of cannon fire and LMG fire to blow them up at close range, bouncing all over the place because I suppose their invincibility script doesn't control for the rag doll effects, then they merely stand up and run away. Seen people take flight like a bird, without a gliding suit. Just straight up into the air, woosh! And the firing through the terrain is back like it was early BF4 when it seemed like every Chinese player was using the same exploits.

I'm still enjoying it, it's just sad to see DICE hasn't gotten even a ball hair's better and preventing simple cheats even after how many games they've cranked out. It's like day one all over again.

I think I'm done with this game. Like for real. I tried to like it but im just not having fun. Like at all. There are moments here and there but that's not nearly enough. Put maybe 20 hours in. I actually dread it. I dread it, I run from it but destiny arrives all the same.

Have a good one.
BF4 was salvageable because the actual framework of the game was amazing. 2042 framework is confused and doesn’t know what it wants to be. I don’t know how I can make it any clearer.

Specialists are shite, maps are terrible, gunplay is shit (but could probably be sorted with a huge overhaul). Most of the games problems come down to maps being bad and the core gameplay being reliant on specialists and solo play. That isn’t salvageable to me unless it has a complete redesign.

Oh and the destruction in this game (the one thing that makes it stand out) is absolutely dreadful and barely exists. They are trying to now sell the game based on these catastrophic random weather events which whilst amazing to look at, doesn’t have the impact that destruction on buildings does. Bad Company 2 was so good because you could force snipers and campers out of their hiding places by blowing shit up.

Let me be clear - If you’re enjoying the game, awesome and all power to you! I have no issue with that.

My issue is with DICE saying ‘we’re ahead of schedule’ and then with the delay saying ‘the games in a great place, just some additional polish to make it better’. Bullshit, the games a mess and again, developers aren’t being honest.

more i play, more i would just prefer a BF3/BF4 remaster. and as it stands their servers are not up to task with 128 players

no small gametypes either! i sometimes enjoy just playing domination.. probably not with this games gunplay though tbf

Yeah agreed, I just think 128 players feels like a mess at times - there's no pacing and your just getting shot in the back from every fucking direction. I find it near impossible to get on a streak of more than 2 or 3 on the base game, so fuck knows how these people are getting 68 kills a game. Must be spamming choppers.

I disagree.

One could have argued that BF4 is confused and doesn't know what it wants to be....

Wants to be a single player game, wants to be "call of duty" cause it has Team Death match =) Sir...you could have argued that BETTER with BF4 vs this game.

This game is clearly more MP focused with 2042 all out warfare for something new, hazard zone for something new, conquest for classic BF and Portal for even more classic BF with rules for exactly what the fuck you even want.
Specialists are shite, maps are terrible, gunplay is shit
Simply more so sounds like you don't like the game and this isn't the game for you then any real technical problem, anyone can fucking saying anything is "shit".

Reasons not to buy Mario Kart and that its "framework" is brokenz "Karts are shit, tracks are shit, drift play is shit" Who the fuck is taking that seriously? Sir....I don't think I or anyone else can ever really take a view you have seriously if it seems like most of your post are like edgelord, extreme "its shit, its shit and this is shite" etc lol

Damn it's painful to watch!

Considering how light hearted Bad Company 1 and 2 are and even BF3 and BF4, I'd say most of BF has been more light hearted then "gritty" and "mature".

Closest thing to that might be BF1 and BFV, but it seems 2042 in many, many ways wants to simply go back to that crazy, BF moments, no fucks given, lolz type thing. So I think because of how dark and depressing the actual concept is, they wanted a balance with funny shit and I get it.

I think we’re just on different wave lengths and that’s fine. I’m not personally attacking you, just making observations about the game after spending a good 5 hours on the trial. There’s no animosity from me to be clear, I respect your opinion, I just disagree with you. Please try to be a bit more respectful in your arguments though.

You’re right too, I really don’t like this game, based on everything I’ve said above.

Your comments around the games framework sound like you don’t know where I’m coming from. Your argument about Mario Kart doesn’t make any sense.

Mario Kart is a racer that understands what it wants to achieve. Battlefield 2042 is a shooter about playing as a team to complete your objectives but doesn’t enforce team play because it lets you have all the tools available to all players at once.

Anyway, nice chat. Enjoy the game, don’t let my opinions rile you up, you’ll give yourself a hernia.

This is really heartbreaking. I used to love BF. I'll still trying to hope for a BF3 remaster in a far future.

Amigo, now you're reaching a bit too far. BC1-2 were a sideshow to the main BF series with that road buddy movie adventure light-hearted vibe that was consistent throughout the games. And I have no problem with that. BC2 is my favorite Battlefield game.
BF3-5 were also consistent in their lore and presentation authenticity. That crazy "Only-In-Battlefield-Moments" would come from pure gameplay sandbox and in my understanding that's what people like and want. And I have no problem with that too.
I think the majority of BF fans also value the general consistency and authenticity of the game series presentation.
Then 2042 revealed with DICE grilling us for 6 months about its serious and apocalyptic setting and the world, preparing for the somber and serious tone of the game.
And that Apex/Fortnite/TikTok (the full boomer hate-list) abominations don't balance anything in my opinion. They just show us that EA/Dice don't care about the artistic expression of the game as long as they could sell dubbing victory poses with cringy one-liners by Ronald Mcdonald-looking characters down the road (it's just my guess that it's done for selling cosmetics, otherwise they just destroy game's aesthetics for no reason).
And even that would've been kinda ok in my books if they gave us Portal without this cringe. I'd stay there and be happy. But alas.

I'm sorry I'm just posting straight from BF2042's reddit now:

Played BC2 and BF3 via Portal Mode. It really is a different game and feels better to play overall.

i am weak, i didn't wanted to get it. but for 40 euro's was like fuck it, lets get it want to replay the old maps in a new jacket. And lets hope it gets better over time as they will be supporting the game for a while. Also the less non woke approach i gotta support after bfv.

One rank away from getting the MP9. The PKP BP LMG is amazing and already starts out with a bipod and foregrip. I've also been using the SMG rounds with the M5 assault rifle.

I forgot that I even unlocked the M44 though, so I'll be trying that out tonight.

I have my 8 loadouts created: Assault, Recon, Marksman, Medic, Engineer, Anti-Vehicle, Support, and Spec-Ops. I switch between them depending on situation and switch between specialist depending on where I'm attacking or defending.

This whole ending dialogue scene makes me more annoyed the more I play the game. There's a lot of big and little things wrong with this game. Do I still have fun? Yea, have I also been annoyed and stepped away...yes.

But these quick-witted ending scenes are just dumb. I feel like I am playing a free-to-play game. It's like lazy world/character building. Can we just turn them off? Give me some progress bars, show a scoreboard, hell I wouldn't mind showing the top squad but I don't need 'cool animations and hip one-liners'.

Exactly. Just give me a way to not see all that.
I'm still salty: I remember how EA allowed us to turn cosmetics off locally to not brake the immersion in SW:Squadrons because they were not selling them.

I just wish the game was as exciting as the trailers. I saw the trailers and was like "fuck yeah! Look sick!"

Played the trial, and i'm like:
