Battlefield 4 PC performance thread

2500k 4.8
16GB
Windows 8.1
290x @ 1100/1375

All Ultra with 2x MSAA and no FXAA

2560x1440

65+ Average with the occasional dip into the low 50's when SHTF. Mostly hovers well north of 60 though depending on the map

Another update. I was running my monitor at 87hz overclocked and for some reason the game never felt smooth at 55-65 fps, only when it would hit 85+ it would smooth-en out.

I set my refresh back to 60 and turned on vertical sync and wow. This engine was made for vertical sync. It's like playing a whole nother game. It feels infinitely more smooth despite the fact that I'm losing a few FPS and so far my machines had no problem keeping 60 locked on any map I've tried aside from Shang.

I did not know where to post this, so I'm going to do it here.

IF I was to cancel my PS4 preorder I would invest that money into my current PC. The problem is I think I'm a bit too far behind in terms of tech. My system would probably require a complete rebuild.

I'm sitting on:

i7 930
MSI GTX 460
6gb Ram

Is it even feasible to get my PC up to PS4 BF4 levels? Ideally 60 fps, 1080P, and solid graphic settings.

your cpu is already good as is your ram
just install an amd 280x for 275 euros or an nvidia gtx 760 for 230 euros (depending if you want nvidia or amd and what your budget is)
you'll be able to run the game at 60 fps with 2xmsaa at 1080p (so better than ps4)

How well will my laptop run this shit?
I ran BF3 at medium, reckon it will be the same or will it look even worse?

i7-2.8GHZ
8GB ddr3 @ 1333mhz
2GB Nvidia 540M

Fuck I can't wait to build my rig.

Whoa, this was worth it. To anybody who is experiencing stuttering and you don't think it's due to your hardware, I would echo recommendations to install Windows 8. Last night it was pretty much unplayable for me, even on the lowest settings. I wasn't really enthusiastic about upgrading my OS right now, but after installing Windows 8 it runs smooth as butter on high settings in MP and never drops below 70 FPS.

And I've only got 4 GB of RAM, so hopefully after I upgrade that I'll be able to run it on ultra.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUU...............

My BF4 stutters pretty bad but I don't want to buy Windows 8 and I even less want to use Windows 8.

But then does it even matter if you don't have a 7xx series Card?

Which Cards can use the DX 11.1 stuff?

Get the free Win8 trial installed to a partition. It's good for 90 days.

Shut up and get win8, nothing wrong with it :p

Just Bought it (Love 15% discount).
Hope my GTX 780m runs this game well.

Anyone have any experience with that card?

Have MS fixed the 8.1 lag issue with the mouse yet? I wouldn't mind going from 8 > 8.1 for this game but i'm not playing games on an OS that causes input lag.

don't do it dennis
principles or a few fps?
Some people here come cheap, are you cheap, dennis k4

Nothing wrong with Windows 8 guys, I've disabled the metro crap in my 8.1 and it's brilliant.

2GB+ of VRAM eh? Fuck, guess that settles it then.. I need to upgrade before I can even think about getting this on PC.

Has it started crashing like nonstop for anyone else? I have been playing for a few hours and just recently I started getting a freeze with sound loop crash.

I get that often in multi, makes me fucking mad especially when I'm doing well in the game and just fucking crashes on me. That plus the audio issues/horrible lag or some servers just completely dying...uhgh

I would consider windows 8 but both my build and the games I play do not make it "woth it" yet.

570 SLI
Core i7 930 @ 4.2
12 GB 1600 Mhz
etc...

upgrading my windows 7 would cost x amount, but who knows how long I will keep the motherboard + CPU combo (i have yet to see any bottleneck due to the CPU).

Similarly, I do not play Bf4 yet (if I get it, it will be when its price is much much lower)... and no other game is seeing worthwhile increases in performance in the win 7 > win 8 upgrade.

3770k i7 @ 4.4Ghz
GTX 670 2GB @ stock
16GB RAM
Samsung 840 Pro SSD
Win 8.1

Game runs brilliant. Everything ultra except effects on Medium with 4x MSAA and it usually stays right at 60fps with a occation dip down to 53-55 when something large happens. Indoors I hit 70-85 constantly. Of course that doesn't matter because I usually use Vsync.

Using Shadowplay I drop 0 frames after extensive testing last night.

by a SHIT ton..it's night and day difference IMO..DICE did well with the optimizing

Oh man that's reassuring. have my copy arriving Friday (EU) and I could barely keep the game above 40FPS regardless of any settings I used while at 1080. Hoping I can hit that magical 50FPS+ mark now at all high as that's what I defaulted to before.

A 7970 on a 720p screen!? what are you doing man!?

Good LORD man dat resolution!!!!!

Get up. Find a window. Jump out of it. BUY A 1080P MONITOR NOW. It is absolutely night and day.

Find me a 1080p 32" 120Hz TV and I'll buy in the near future. And I do mean 120Hz, the real thing, none of that Clear Scan, Aquamotion bullshit.

I've been looking for days and I can't find anything.

Fired up single player last night just to check it out and was getting major flickering of light/smoke effects with 331.65 driver. Rolled back to the one before it and got the disco ball effect on top of the flickering :(

2500k
8gig
690gtx
1080p

Any idea what it could be? I tried High and Ultra but still had flickering.

Almost any and all 3D monitors have a 120Hz refresh rate.

Dammit this game has me considering Windows 8

I am able to run everything on a mostly high with some ultra. It has some slight stutters from time to time. So I am not sure if I will go Windows 8 or get some more ram.

Overclocked i7 at 3.2 (sorry not sure the exact model it is a few years old)
660 TI 2gig
8 gigs ram
1080

Anyone know exactly how much VRAM is being used at 1080p Ultra with MSAAx4?

I played 2 64-player rounds last night, forgot the map name, but I saw anywhere from 1.7-1.94GB used on my 2GB GTX680. The engine works in a way where the more VRAM you throw at it, the more it will use, same as BF3. Just because it is maxing out your particular VRAM, doesn't mean you are going to run into VRAM problems.

I'm in actual despair @ the 720p screen.

Also, Z fighting?
Honestly, a lower resolution display isn't going to look half bad. The resolution looks terrible when upscaled on a higher resolution PC LCD but if that's actually 720p on a native 1280x720 panel it really won't look bad AND you'll get a huge performance advantage. You could downscale it easily while maintaining a good framerate.

Resolution isn't everything. 1280x960 on a CRT monitor can appear more beautiful to the naked eye than 1920x1080 on an LCD.

Honestly, a lower resolution display isn't going to look half bad. ..

I meant as in coupled with a 7970 - my bad.

EDIT: Have DICE implemented adaptive v-sync in this? When i v-sync the game it only ever mixes between 30 and 60 even though everything is on default [let the app decide] in the Nvidia control panel.

So has anyone tried both the x86 and x64 versions of the game for comparison? I'm currently just running the x64 one and I would try the x86 but my black ass has to go to work damnnit.

You'll probably have to do that manually in the Nvidia control panel.

After playing a few maps I can tell you that the CPU of mine makes up for some of the shortcomings I have vs your GPU. I have dipped into the lower 50's but my 3930k at 4.5ghz is working well for me with a 670.

I haven't done any real benchmarks but my fps is almost always above 60.

^^ I've had no crashes after about an hour of games.

I also updated to 8.1 and I don't really have a comparison but if it helps this game then maybe that's part of the reason why I'm able to sustain 60fps since some have a better GPU but a worse CPU than mine.

Not sure what difference memory makes but I have mine OC'd to 2133.

Is there any word, official or otherwise, on what is causing the crashes, and when we can expect a fix?

Well ATM it's a typical
DICE
game launch. There are so many different bugs/crashes with different configurations and settings it's hard for us and them to lockdown. Not only that, if you follow any of the DICE guys on Twitter, a lot of them seem to be signing off for the year.
-----------------------------------------
As for my v-sync issue, it's doing the same in the Unigine benchmark when i use their v-sync option - locked at either 30/60. Looks like driver re-install :/

After changing the "effects" setting from ultra to high, I am getting a stable 60fps now, seems to be the most hardware hungry setting. I also turned hyper threading off (3770k) after reading various reports that it decreases performance. Any experience on this? My fps don't tank anymore during big explosions, but that might be connected to the effect setting.

Also thinking about Windows 8 now. Fuck you Dice! :/

My Uncle said turning HT off helped him massively with a stuttering issue - 920 @ 3.6GHz/480SLI/Win 7.

There was a similar issue back when BF3 launched. Using a stock 3770 myself and have to say i don't notice any stuttering with HT on - the joys of PC gaming!

How is it possible for that to decrease performance? I have a 6 core CPU, don't have any need to ever turn that off.

Windows 8 though, I can't really attest to the difference since I have only played the final version on 8.

I don't know why but I'm unable to play in full screen. I can play border-less window but I can't alt tab properly and the game window always stays in the front.

Any tips to fix this?

I did the same thing with my 120hz monitor and saw a massive improvement in smoothness. Are you using BF4's vertical sync option, or your video card's option? (I am using Nvidia's adaptive sync and it seems to be even smoother, but it's hard to tell.)
