Battlefield 4 PC performance thread

Is it true that the in game V-sync is triple buffered? D3DOverider doesn't seem to be working on mine and with me playing on a TV I was getting some pretty severe tearing.

Bumping this since it was at the bottom of the last page.

I'm experiencing a weird pausing issue with this game. I run at ultra/1080p and my framerste hovers at 90-100 fps when playing online and i get those random half second freeeze. I'm starting to suspect ram iasues (this machine only has 8gb) unless its a known bug..

It's lag on the server, it's like you run 20 feet, then it hitches, your run another 20 feet, then it hitches, ect, ect.

Just leave the server and find a new one, I'm not sure what causes it, but it seems like each time it's happened there has been somebody connected to the game with a >300ms ping...idk.

This latest patch really helped with performance on my 280X (oc'ed to 1125gpu/6800mem).
I am running ULTRA with 2x MSAA and getting 70 - 100 FPS in outdoor firefights. AWESOME!!! No stuttering whatsoever.

I am not sure if I should buy this on PC or PS4,
My specs are: i5 3575K @ 4.4 GHZ but my GPU is an old Radeon 6950 HD slightly overclocked.

Where would I get better visuals/frame rate? I don't want to play on low settings on PC, a good medium and some high settings would be ideal.
Oh and my monitor res is 1680 x1050

I think your CPU is great... and probably the rest of your build as well. I was facing the same dilemma and have a PS4 pre-ordered. For PS4 at launch, there is nothing that I want to play besides Battlefield 4. I decided to get the Asus 280X ($309), OC it and not touch the rest of my PC components. I will get my PS4 and sell it at launch, use the leftover money to pay for the 280X and buy the PS4 a few months down the road (when there are games).

Just weighing in with current performance:

7870
i5-3570k
8 gb DDR3 1600
SSD
Win 7 x64

all stock clocks (for now)

Following the discovery that effects level is the biggest detriment to performance, I lowered that to high. Everything else is Ultra with 2x MSAA. consistently between 70-80 fps in multi now!

Your resolution probably makes up for the slight difference in our cards. I think you'll run it swimmingly.

Quick question, where does an i7 980x 4.2Ghz land in comparison with the new CPU's everyone is on about? Bah with all this Sandy and Ivy business... back in my day *yadder yadder*

With a 780 (3gb) Oc'd to 1200 core and 6700 mem (cant seem to reach that 7000 spot even with 1.2v)

I am curious as well. I'm still running an i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz. I have been putting off upgrading my mobo/CPU for a while and I'm wondering if it's finally time to bite the bullet.

I doubt your going to find many people with a i7 980x to compare it to but with it's 12 threads and compared to lesser CPUs in that same generation, you should be fine.

Also, the i7 920 seems to keep up well with the newer CPUs based on benchmarks and my own person experience.

Yeah, benchmarks seem to indicate that it holds up okay, I'm just concerned since MP is so demanding on the CPU.

Also... based on all of the benchmarks I gave in and ordered Windows 8.

Well, thanks the low native res on my monitor (1680x1050), I'm getting 80+ fps consistently with everything but effects on Ultra on SP. Only noticeable drop was the part was when going over the small hill into the construction site, got into mid 60's there.

Anyone wager if my rig can keep 60+ fps with these settings on MP?

Core i5 750

8GB ram
Windows 8.1

Once you get uses to Windows 8's speed you'll never want to go back to 7. Also System refresh is the best thing Microsoft has done in a long time. Kiss having to do fresh installs in order to get your system running nice smooth again goodbye.

I'm getting upwards of 80 in mp with similar specs and the same settings.

dunno how is that map with burning vehicles called, it's probably shanghai? it felt laggy, flames+2msaa are killing fps well it seems

Somewhat off topic - has anyone had problems launching from Origin? I can only launch the game from Battlelog (on Firefox only). It will not launch from desktop shortcuts either. Any ideas?

Siege of Shanghai has been the worst map for me performance-wise as well. It drops below 60fps in a lot of areas.

Launching from shortcuts or Origin only opens a browser tab to Battlelog. You launch the game from there.

Those artifacts are most often due to overheating GPU, I used to see them a lot back in the Radeon 8500 days.

Card only hits 75C, so I doubt it. I think it's more just that this game does not like my OC, even though it's stable in all other games. Gonna go back to stock speeds (for this card 680 DCII Top it's still 1200MHz) and see if that helps.

PCGH review is now out (SP):

http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Battl...field-4-Test-Benchmarks-Grafikkarten-1095050/

Judging by GameGPU, PCGH, PCLAB, Sweclockers reviews and some of impressions here it seems like the SP is actually more demeaning than the MP. How is this possible I don't know.

There's way more stuff going on in SP when it comes to effects, smoke and shit that really make the GPU sweat.

was just testing it out. i've read that aiming down the sight is bugged and scales with fov (it shouldnt)

and i was playing snipe without any optics so :)

I'm downloading the game right now, any info on the perfomance of the AMD radeon 7970 6gb edition?
Mi current setup:

Intel i5 3570 K (stock speed)
8gb gskill ares 1600
Sapphire toxic 7970 6gb (stock speed)
Samsung 840 SSD 120 gb.

I'm able to max the game and getting a decent perfomance with this setup? I don't want to OC the cpu and the gpu because the temps on air and the bitfenix prodigy are a little high.

lol why don't you just try a match and see? I think you'll be just fine in MP

The campaign is destroying my computer. First, I crashed immediately after
blowing up that wall and going outside.
I reboot the computer and launch it again, and then after
running through the pipes and going back outside
I start getting crazy artifacts, and then it locks up on me.

I hate when this happens, because I'm pretty confident my OC is to blame (680 clocked to 1200/whatever on the memory, I forget...but it never gets above 54 C), but it's been stable in every other game I've thrown at it.

I know the game is pretty crash-prone, but is anyone else getting artifacts on a stable OC? I've updated to the latest non-beta drivers, btw.

Did some testing. Gonna echo others: the "Effects Quality" setting has the most significant hit on performance than any other, the framerate difference between High and Ultra fucking huge. The effect seems to handle, surprise surprise, "effects" like particle effects (smoke/fire/sparks/etc), though I don't think include stuff like dof/bokeh/blur.

Without a doubt the best place to test this is the second campaign level, early on when you're looking out over the Shanghai hotel courtyard before infiltration. As most people will have experienced, framerate tanks in this area. However, with fraps running I noticed it wasn't constant; it fluctuates. The reason? The fucking water jets. When they're spraying, down goes the framerate. When they're not, the framerate soars right back up.

Here's an example of the difference in that area while the water is spraying. All other settings on "Ultra", post-AA off, MSAAx4, 1920x1080:

"Effects Quality" set to "Ultra": ~27fps
"Effects Quality" set to "High": ~52fps

That's a cost of ~25fps for one setting during intense particles.

What I'd like to know is what hardware the "Effects Quality" setting is dependant on: GPU or CPU. Transparencies and what not might fall back on the CPU. I'd also like to know what's going on with the technology between "High" and "Ultra". Density maybe, or how the particle responds to lighting and shadows. It's hard to spot a visual difference to be perfectly honest, but it would be interesting to learn what changes are made to particle rendering between those two settings.

In hindsight this explains a way a lot of my framerate dips from the beta, specifically when the tower collapsed and was spitting out particles, and when I died while in a tank and the kill cam highlighted my opponent through my smoking/burning remains. I was running everything on ultra at the time.

So yeah. If you're finding framerate dips during really intense stuff that involves particle effects (explosions, fire, smoke, dust kicked up by helicopters, etc), drop it down from Ultra to High and enjoy the tremendous framerate increase.

Speaking as a QA analyst, this post brings a tear to my eye

Was considering upgrading my 570 this year because of this game, but I think I'll postpone that. Lowering some settings really helped, or it's just Shanghai post-collapse that it can't quite handle (so far, knock on wood). Oh and single player is just barely playable maxed, but who cares.

1080p, SSAO, 2xMSAA, FXAA medium, Textures, filtering and effects lowered to high, and at least the Goldeneye map runs really rather nice. 52FPS average over a 19 minute 64p round. I'm positively surprised.

Yep you'll be fine.

This is maddening. My PC automatically restarts anytime I enter a game in multiplayer or save settings in the test range. Has anyone heard or come across this problem at all?

W8.1 64 bit

i3 2120 @ 3.3 GHz

I just want to play this game!

Haven't heard of PC restarts. Try repairing the install in origin maybe?

I'm having an OCed 7970 (3GB) - playing at ultra with 4xmsaa in SP works well but stable 60FPS are only possible withour msaa. MP seems fine though.

Just FYI, anyone having problems on the map Siege of Shanghai can fix this by lowering effects settings. That smoke kills machines, even my 290x is struggling there.

hahah i dropped effects to medium and everything esle is ultra/high and shiiiet what a difference in FPS.

yeah this map is the worst for fps by far its amazing i get 60+ on every map but this one it drops to 45 at times and i also have a 290x

Ultra everything except Mesh Quality/Effects Quality/Anti aliasing Post (running on Medium). 2xAA

GeForce 660 OEM with 1.5gb
Intel i7 3770 3.4ghz
SSD
16gb RAM

Staying above 30fps at 1080p

On my 2nd mission. I somehow ended up in some underground ice rink and had to restart the mission.
