Bayonetta out on Steam (4K, dual audio), $19.99, PC launch trailer, dev diary

SGSSAA - Sparse Grid Super Sampling Anti-Aliasing
OGSSAA - Ordered Grid Super Sampling Anti-Aliasing (or just SSAA)
HSAA - Hybrid Sampling Anti-Aliasing (basically MSAA + SSAA)

http://i.imgur.com/s9zH4A0.jpg

Using the numbers in the pic as guides:
1- Create a new profile named Bayonetta
2- Make sure that profile is selected
3- Add the game's executable
4- Set the field to 0x000012C1 and set Antialiasing fix to On

5- This depends on which AA you want, for any of them set "Antialiasing - Mode" to Override.
For SGSSAA set "Antialiasing - Setting" to 4x or 8x Multisampling (least costly performance wise of the 3).
For OGSSAA set it to something like 2x2 Supersampling (not on my PC right now so I can't check the exact name).
Not sure about HSAA, but there should be fields that mention both Multisampling and Supersampling, these are usually very costly though so better not.

6- If using SGSSAA, set this to 4x Sparse Grid Supersampling if using 4x Multisampling, or 8x Sparse Grid if using 8x Multisampling.
While not shown in the pic, setting a LOD Bias to negative numbers can help with the blur from SGSSAA (-1 for 4x or -1.5 for 8x).
If using OGSSAA or HSAA, I think this field can be left empty.

7- Apply changes.
According to MrBonk in the Guru3D forums, turning AA Fix on makes the image sharper when using SGSSAA, so I edited the quoted post to include that.

Playing this game makes me miss old school DMC games so much.

The combat in this game makes Nier's look embarrassingly simplistic, too

I would hope so... the entirety of Bayonetta is built around the combat and combo system. Not at all the case for Nier.

Nier is a story driven RPG, while Bayonetta wouldn't really be anything without its combat. That much is to be expected.

Nier combat is still deceptively good though, definitely top tier for an ARPG. Especially once you start using plugin chips and pod switching.

Nier combat is sadly brought down by the shite balancing though, it's way too easy to overlevel and if you overlevel it's way too easy. But it's mechanically great for an ARPG.

On the other hand I keep getting stone statues since chapter 2 in Bayo :P
Also, thank god for checkpoints during bossfights, just finished chapter 4.

PSA that you can flip the vertical controls on the Space Harrier section so that up is up. Open the control menu (left trigger, I think) then there should be a button to invert controls in the corner.

I haven't gotten to that level on PC, so maybe they finally made the default controls the logical option. But it took me several years and many playthroughs before I realized that option was there, so I figured I'd spread the word.

Nier's balancing is awful - while it'd never have been able to compare with a pure action game like Bayonetta, removing the leveling system entirely would have allowed its combat to be much more rewarding. It'd still have had plenty of better-implemented RPG systems through the pod programs, plug-in chips and even weapon upgrades (which offset arbitrary strength increases with marginally different effects applied to each weapon set at higher levels) - so the admittedly simplistic core of the melee combat would still not have had to stand on its own. The lack of a global power modifier like character levels would also have provided a stronger incentive for upgrading Pods and using the full plug-in chip storage capacity, and overall giving players more reasons for playing with all of the game's upgrade systems and specialising their character instead of being able to coast through on default loadouts.

Is the Leaderboards the best way to check out your current top scores/ranks, or is there another method? It seems to default to loading everyone's scores for that level, which takes ages to load each time.

I combed through like literally the entire game files and I couldn't find any obvious ui stuff :(

even after extracting all of the .cpk's there isn't a ui folder unlike in mgr and nier :/

Wow that Space Harrier level was shitty.

Also really really long.

But mostly shitty.

Welcome to Kamiya games. Every gameplay section that isn't the core gameplay is godawful.

Prior to its cancellation, I was fully expecting Scalebound to have a terrible Space Harrier section.

I think Viewtiful Joe's horizontal shmup section is okay, mostly because I remember it being fairly brief. Wonderful 101's Punch Out! minigame is also pretty neat.

Damn it, I like the Space Harrier section.

The only real problem is putting the best boss fight in the game after it, with no ability to skip it. I can't defend that, but the game's pacing for replays is bad period. So many pointless interruptions you have to skip through, some kind of auto-streamlining replay mode would have been fantastic.

It's way too long. That's a problem irrespective of the boss fight.

Re: general pacing, at least there's a button shortcut to skip cutscenes (select + RT for those unaware). Add to that the extremely short load times and I can't complain about replay pacing too much.

The game is running super bad even in low settings. And I should have a machine to run it well

My game defaulted to the integrated graphics chip at first. If it's run into super terribly (like, even the Sega logo is lagging) check that first.

Honestly i hated the motorcycle segment worse.

Agreed. At least the Space Harrier section has something resembling combat with mechanics.

Only time the motorbike is engaging is when I'm trying to Witch Time slide through the Beloveds for points. And it's just the same semi-randomized segment copy+pasted like 4 times.

While riding the motorcycle, I managed to glitch out and fall through the bridge a couple times.

Don't speed up, especially on the side bridge. Jumping is also risky.

Not making excuses for the game, but that's how you avoid glitching it. My first time playing, I remember I fell off the side bridge like a dozen times before I figured out that I shouldn't speed up, lol.

The space harrier section would have been a ton better with 2 small tweaks:

1. Make the missile you're riding way smaller. It blocks too much of the screen so you can't see what's shooting at you. So instead of precision dodging and feeling like a badass you just spam dodge when stuff is in front of you.

2. Don't spin the whole god damned screen when you dodge. Given that Japan has a lot more issues with simulation sickness then most regions, this was really surprising. I don't get affected by it, but I was getting a headache from it. I imaging folks sensitive to sim sickness *really* love this.

How can you change that? on the ingame menus doesn't appear which chip is using

For my laptop, I went into nVidia Control Panel (right click the Desktop), found the Bayonetta's program, and set it to use the graphics card.

And yeah, mine also only listed the graphics card in the in-game menu, even though it was using integrated.

Game ran locked at 60@4k in the beginning and now 3h in I get some frequent drops to 55.

I just installed the W10 creators update so I'm not sure if that might be the problem. I turned Game Mode and Game DVR off but it's still stuttering.

Anybody else having frequent stutters?

Really hope I can fix this because it's a blast to play. Can't believe I missed this on 360.

Yeah I was having the same convo with a friend after I beat nier a. It's probably the worst combat in the big budget non licensed action game type games that they've made, but considering the competition is the fucking Witcher 3 and skyrim I find it extremely difficult to gather the effort to bitch too much about it, lulz...

For a first effort at trying to do PG combat in an open world rpg type game, Nier is really, really good. I just hope we don't get another rising situation where they make this super awesome game with a few warts that could easily be ironed out in a sequel that would produce one of the best games of all time, but then shit happens and no sequel for no reason to do with anything PG did.

I haven't started Nier yet, but is the difficulty balance bad even on Hard? I hate when overleveling ruins otherwise good combat systems.

There's even some combat sections I don't like playing, actually lol

Like, there's this one section on hard with 3 gold wolverines and then the arena is scattered with random cars that drive in and can hit you.

It would be semi-ok since you can place the camera in a way where you can see the car coming in from a distance, but I'm fighting the camera in this section for some reason because it does this auto rotate whenever I start to move around.

(is there an option I need to mess with to stop this? Anyway, the tech on hard is to just do the perfect parry so that you don't have to deal with all the bullshit)

There's this one section with a giant ball falling on you while you're fighting enemies and it's annoying to do because I want to study the enemies in this sequence, but then I have to deal with this extra thing with its gigantic AOE that stuns you that only occurs like once in the damn game.

(I can probably just parry the thing or something to not give up positioning, but it's still annoying and I would have taken a normal fight over this)

There's also 2 enemies in particular that are incredibly boring to fight: flying snake (shoot it out of the air and then DPS when it lands... hit it in the air to avoid most of its ground attacks) and flying boat (always placed above a damn hole and you need to jump onto it, so I'm doing random platforming I don't really want to be doing in a game like this).

There's actually lot of things I don't like doing in the game and I don't remember this feeling being nearly as frequent in part 2 >_>

The balance is bad period. On hard, the meta is to buy 99 healing items and then stack defense chips whenever something OHKOs you.

On very hard, the meta is to go to the options menu and turn the difficulty down to hard.

Valkyria Chronicles, Dragon's Dogma, Bayonetta - what a great trend. I feel like all of this started with the Dark Souls petition.

Hope we get Vanquish soon.

Harder difficulty is really dumb in neir.

Due to the way the scaling works in conjunction with the leveling system (something that obviously gave pg fits when designing the game), the game essentially throws it's hands in the air and has enemies randomly one shot you all of the time in order to make it "harder".

I wouldn't ever really recommend playing the game on anything other than normal.

omg, it really worked, thank you so much, only a guy with an avatar of such a great game could have helped me

Something between normal and hard would have been a good start. EXP scaling or level caps based on your main story progress would have been another decent method. Or just doing away with levels entirely and have the chips/weapon and pod upgrades be the progression like Golnei.
But eh... As you said, it's their first shot at a game like Nier A, and for that it's very good.

Now for Bayonetta:
Chapter 5 was kicking my ass hard. Really hard.
The fuck.

I really wish Bayonetta had some Bloody Palace-type simplistic battle arena. The combat against basic enemies is so fun that I wish I could simply do nothing else. Sometimes I just pick a chapter with a good normal battle section early on, fight the enemies, then quit to them chapter menu and start over again. Thankfully you get together keep your halos that way.

Or some challenge mode like in Transformers.

I'm always really happy when an action game has close to zero sections with deviating mechanics, like Dragon's Crown. Or Treasures Alien Soldier that is just boss fight after boss fight.

It does. The "Angel Slayer" chapter is unlocked by beating all Alfheim challenges. Basically like a survival mode in the Alfheim area that begins at a normal difficulty, and gets increasingly and increasingly more difficult as you progress through each encounter. In Angel Slayer you fight some of the most incredibly difficult enemy counters and boss battles too (I have yet to beat it in its entirety in 7 years!). Also there's a unique reward for beating it.
