Bayonetta out on Steam (4K, dual audio), $19.99, PC launch trailer, dev diary

I remember buying this on WiiU and playing it for the first time. It was really bad in my opinion. Very cheesy and boring. I didn't understand the hype. I never picked it up again after trying it for like 2 hours.

Maybe I should give it another chance?

If you didn't like the combat, you're going to hate it again.

I would say yes but maybe you just don't like these games man its alright.

The hype is all about the game's deep combat system, the variety of enemy design and bosses, and the amount of content and secrets in the game.

Forgot I don't actually like playing bayonetta. She is far less mobile, and her attacks far heavier than other action games.

Man, I am garbage at these games, Nier and now Bayo. I mostly stick to one weapon and some combos. Really fun game though.

That's the beauty of it, Bayonetta can be really fun at a basic level.

Ah thanks. I tried to do that at first but It was hard to not hit one as it seems to automatically lock on to anything that got close. I'll try again but further away.

If you're still having issues, try using 'Beast Within' instead of regular dodges in between your attacks to put some distance between yourself and your enemies. Bayonetta's mobility is crazy enough that you can get wherever you need to be in the blink of an eye.

Straight up sarcasm?

Don't understand this criticism honestly. I've always viewed Bayonetta as more far mobile than any other action game character especially if you compare it to the gameplay in God of War and Devil May Cry. You can smoothly dodge cancel out of almost everything to continue your combo (including in the air), plus you can speed around in panther mode between combos, etc. Divekicks, afterburner kicks, stingers across the map. You can also even teleport to enemies using the "Umbran Spear" ability. Bayonetta's controls are probably the most flexible of any character action game.

Never got past the first few chapter, but it feels like once a combo string begins im just sort of sitting in place. Yes dodge is a great cancel, but your not really moving. Maybe just need to get farther.

Keep playing mate. The first few chapters you are rather limited because you don't have a lot of abilities that the game is meant to be played with and you dont have a lot of weapons unlocked. You'd be correct to think that the game doesn't feel quite as fast as it should be just yet. If the lack of movement is bumming you out, it gets way better in Chapter 5 when you unlock Panther mode.

You are not supposed to evade enemies or their attacks by running around them, you dodge them or you block. There are many hack and slash'style games where you simply go near enemies and hammer away at the attack button and run away and around them until they are dead, they don't have a softlock like Bayonetta or it is way weaker as in Bayonetta. Bayonetta is different in that regard as it is focused at fighting an enemy with focus and mechanics, if an enemy is 20 times bigger than you and has an axe that could split a building in two then in other games you mostly evade their slow axe swings and wait for your opportunity. In Bayonetta you take them head on and crush them where they stand, or you get crushed!

Well, you can't dodge into panther until like chapter 5, so i kinda see.

and you don't learn about dodge offset until you experiment for yourself... or someone tells you about it

Actually there's an unmissable book somewhere in chapter 3-5 that tells you about Dodge Offset.

I wish i could play it in 4K but my 280X doesn't support it.

Btw. can something be done about lack of AA on AMD cards? There is no AA no matter what i chose. Did they say anything about fixing this maybe?

I won't try to explain the controls here (since I'm on mobile), but learn Dodge Offset. It blurs the line between attacking, dodging, and movement.

And not too far into the game you'll pick up Panther Within, which lets you turn into an absurdly mobile Panther on command. And yes, Panther Offset lets you constantly do it mid combo.

I'm pretty sure the Dodge Offset book is in your inventory under Umbran techniques from the start. The game just never points it out to you.

Well, at last i tried this port and its not bad! But far from great either (30 fps realtime cutscenes is real shame), performance is a little wonky too - get some rare minor framedrops with 4x MSAA/1080p (used 0x00001241 bit), but still distracting. DSR or SGSSAA either too blurry (shockingly) or too slow for my GTX 970/i5-3570 combo, maybe i need to try Gedosato sometime..

Replayed chapter 3 for good measure, realized I had new things to buy (the Bat skill), switched my weapon loadout and wiped those Grace and Glory fuckers on the second try.
Feels good.
You'll get better at fighting them. They are, ironically, one of the game's most predictable enemies; you just need to learn what to look for and what to expect.

The main thing is to understand that they're never going to just sit there and let you wail on them. Always be ready to dodge (or parry if you have Moons, which you should) and know that if you get parried you need to be ready to dodge immediately.

There's also something to be said for only using wicked weaves but this shits on your score.

This game is broken for me. I played 90 minutes without problems and now I'm in the burning city and framerate gets to like 5fps. Titlemenu was 60 like ever but then ... :(

Restart on PC and Steam didn't work.

I have the same problem. Some areas of the game just straight up don't work.

I've just finished chapter 5, but the amount of depth the combos have is insane.
I still suck though.

And it's definitely not beginner-friendly.
The game is hard as fuck. Basically 'git gud or screw off'.
And I feel like the difficulty ramps up way faster than you can keep up with. I currently keep dying to the Grace and Glories at the beginning of chapter 6 and I've basically died my way through chapter 5, and it's not a pleasant experience.
I blame the loading screens. Seriously, there is no time to practice anything if you don't manually stall it and if you don't practice you get bodied. But extending loading times on your own feels so wrong <.<

Eh normal is fairly easy Non stop infinite climax is where the true difficulty lies (and even then it's not that difficult just a bit more challenging.) The thing is with these sorts of games is simply clearing is not the point and the game has no problem telling you if you suck if your abusing certain mechanics so end up with a low rank. You can button mash your way through normal and get stones the whole way through.

Holy crap, so much things I didn't know from just the first video, good stuff.

Edit: wait its only a two part series, damn it.

Saurian's videos are amazing, but yeah only 2 parts. : /

I recommend watching 'yoshesque'. I think she's one of if not the best Bayonetta players.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOVVmm4KOm4

Multiple let's plays, a bit of guides, combo videos, and research videos. Watching her play is mesmerizing, especially when witch time is turned off on Nonstop Infinite Climax.

The game never made sense for me and I was never able to play without the Marionette accessory until I watched her videos and learned about Dodge Offset. It changed my life.

Honestly i hated the motorcycle segment worse.

So much this.

The Space Harrier was fun, but it over stayed its welcome. The motorcycle section was just terrible and brought down the entire game for me. The only thing that kept me throwing my controller against the wall was that the music was very good.

It depends, I managed to get gold overall in Bayo 1 and 2 my first time on hard and these are the first games in this genre that I ever played. Didn't try a high difficulty except in a few levels.

I wasn't aware she is still at it, she even says in the latest video that she will play through the PC version again if a PC version happens (wasn't clear at the recording of the video). I will definitely keep an eye on that.

No one answered my question about AA. :( Sorry but i can't read through 30+ pages.

Can i force AA somehow? Use ReShade or something? Or should i just wait and hope they fix it?

It's crazy how long Chapter 5 is. By the end I was still almost out of health despite PPing about half the Verses. I must have died at least 10 times when I went through it for the very first time.

On the upside, I feel like I've finally reached the point where I can use the whip and not make a fool out of myself!

I've played the game on PS3 before, now playing it on PC. Maybe it's the framerate, or maybe I understand the mechanics much more now, but I'm doing much better. On my PS3 playthrough I was constantly dying or in almost-dying state. Now, while I can't say I breeze through the game, at least I can get combos, survive battles without dying, and end up Verses with decent scores. :D

I'm still baffled by some design decisions, though. I hate that the lock-on button is on the same side of the controller as the dodge button. As someone who rarely use gamepad, I'm getting a hard time constantly switching between lock-on and dodge (and no, I can't operate RT with my middle finger :/). Also, whoever made it that pressing the left stick make you drop Angel Arm -- I hate you; you made that Alfheim when you had to only use Angel Arms much harder than it should be, because I was constantly accidentally dropping weapons.

I also don't like how much the game loves to "waste" your time. You want to enter Hell's Gate just to quickly buy something? Here's a cut-scene of Rodin talking (when you enter) and Bayonetta walking away (when you leave). You want to try Alfheim? Well, instead of simply starting the mission right away (like DMC does it), you have to walk past the bridge every time you erstart it and only then you get a mission description; and when you end the mission, you have to pass the bridge again to quit Alfheim, because reasons. It's kind of annoying after a while.

And insta-death QTEs out of nowhere. Fuck them :|

And I dread to replay that space harrier section.

the problem with lock-on is that you're actually using it

and all cutscenes (except ones with QTEs) can be skipped using RT+select/back as already mentioned :P

She's fucking ridiculous.

I've just played DMC4:SE before I bought Bayonetta. You can't blame me for using a lock-on button :(

You can skip the Rodin shop or any cutscene using Back + RT.

Thanks, I didn't know about the shortcut. Pressing Start -> Skip -> Confirm every time was getting annoying.

You can enable AA through the drivers. I'm playing with 8X MSAA and it looks very clean.

Has anyone found a way to edit their X360 or WiiU save file to work on PC? I would love to pick up my progress cuz I already unlocked so much shit, lmao.

I have Steam Xbox controller configuration set to swap RB and LT to match Bayo 2's default controls. It's (Rodin voice) Beautiful.

I similarly got a gold on my first time playing Bayo/Bayo 2 on hard, but my first time through normal on the first game I got destroyed. You don't know anything on the first playthrough.

Can you please or someone else help me little more with this??
I tried this and set 8xEQ and i chose Supersampling and my fps tanked. But i was sure that it works so now i have few more questions. :)

1. First of all should i use "Enhance application settings" or "Override application settings"? I guess override is the right answer?

2. AA filter. Standard or Edge-detect?

3. Multisampling, Adaptive Multisampling or Supersampling?

Also should i change other settings for this game? Like AF, Texture filtering quality, surface format optimization, Tessellation... does it make any difference and if yes what should i change?

Thanks.

It's time for most of you to visit Saur's Youtube Bayonetta guides. Absolutely 100% essential!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqzztvoVngY&list=PLrwWQGfD4d7F1-fXzodIL1LLARxFEQAhJ

Remember, the REAL game is Non-Stop Climax mode.

My appreciation for this game just shot up 300% after watching these two videos. Very well made! Just learning about the softlock and hardlock as well as the reliability of audio cues is amazing.

And the element of offense and defense transitioning seamlessly compared to other action titles is a great insight. It really is so odd to switch between games like Dark Souls and Monster Hunter to this one where your position relative to your enemy fills a very different role, and where enemies can be in very different states - like being vulnerable to being lifted off the ground or staggered, or having your regular attacks simply bounce off.

Stuff like this is why I love videogames. Watching or reading a really in-depth guide and suddenly realizing how intricate a game can be is immensely satisfying. It takes time to "read" these games - looking at the screen and recognizing what options you have. Reminds me of when I first got into pinball and had absolutely no idea what all these blinking lights and animations on the little orange screen are supposed to indicate, and a few weeks later you see the same machine and instantly see what´s happening.

To me, Bayonetta is a prime example of a game I actually kinda hated at first and then suddenly realize that I was approaching the game with the wrong mindset. Very similar to Monster Hunter in that regard.

Shelving this until I figure out the deal with the framerate. Chapter VII was nearly unplayable -- got a gold due to the sheer choppiness of things making dodging a total guess -- and Chapter VIII actually is unplayable.

This thread on guru3d should help you get started.

Grab the latest version of nvidia profile inspector here

Latest version of profile inspector has an easy combined (Mode + Setting) tab as well that i use, so you can easily set your type of AA.
