BBC: "Profits tumble at gamer Nintendo"

Nintendo has seen quarterly profits tumble, hit by waning demand for its computer game consoles and the cost of launching new products.

Net profit for the April to June three month period fell to 14.12bn yen (£72m; $126m) from 22.64bn a year ago.

In May, the company warned that profits would come under pressure from rivals such as Sony and Microsoft.

So far, demand for its new DS portable game machine has not been strong enough to offset waning GameCube sales.

Demand for its Game Boy Advance, however, slipped to 980,000 units from 2.3 million in the same period a year earlier.

Sales of its GameCube console also declined and analysts said that this was due to the fact that many consumers had either been lured by rival products or were waiting for the release of Nintendo's new Revolution in 2006.

hmmm.

Better be thankfull Sony, and hope Europe forgives you for screwing them on the PSP launch dates.

Only Nintendo is cool enough to get three threads about essentially the same exact thing, even though they technically had better news than Sony and Microsoft in the console sector.

Nintendo's results aren't broken down by sector, or even the gaming business in general ;)

This isn't the first thread about it.
There's usually one Sony thread about losses and about 300 threads about Nintendo.

I know you're doing your best to do your cover work in every thread this morning, but we're just discussing videogames here. We know Microsoft is SUCH A BIG COMPANY that any loss they sustain in the console sector they more than cover in their other areas. This is not about which company is doomed, merely how they perform where this forum covers: Gaming.

Well, you keep making loose comparisons to Sony and Microsoft so I challenge them. Nintendo's numbers reflect all of their business, not just gaming unlike Sony or Microsoft's.

In the other thread I was just joking because you made the mistake of not specifying Microsoft's H&E division.

Its not like these threads have any value anyway, so I see no reason to carry on serious conversation. Theres already 5399 threads on this topic.

What does Nintendo do not related to games?
Game-related merchandise?
Or maybe game-related movies?
Oh wait...

Plenty. They own The Pokemon Company for starters. As well as The Seattle Mariners and several other investments.

Also, my main point was that he saud "console sector", while the numbers reflect both console sand handhelds.

And the funny thing is - IF they did make a loss one quarter - it would not really matter as they could cover the loss with their still quite big warchest. Unlike other companies Nintendo doesn't try and fight taxes by spending all of their profits each year - Instead they actually save their profits to cover themselves for development and potential losses.

Yes, Nintendo has enough cash to survive for a long time. Not that they are expecting losses anytime soon anyway

Sony posts second loss quarter in a row. Nothing happens.
Nintendo posts LESS of a profit, the world goes to shit.

This is probably because any time someone here challenges the wisdom of Nintendo's recent decisions and suggests that they may need to change their approach to the market, the response from the Nintendo faithful is inevitably, 'Why? They're still profitable, and that's all that matters.' Considering how often Nintendo's profitability gets brought up as a blanket defense against criticism, evidence that those profit margins may actually be shrinking is big news. :p

But are their profit margins shrinking? Paradoxically their userbases are lower, but they're richer and more prosperous than ever.

These numbers cover Apr-Jun as we've already discussed in my version of this thread, it's operating profit -- meaning profit minus operations, the Gamecube is at the end of its cycle, the DS is only just starting its own and its facing a real battle against PSP, and Nintendo are funding the R&D / launch of TWO new consoles within the next year. Oh and still profitable. Not that it matters.... their games are shit hot too. Thats what matters.

Just to argue on a technicality, this news (that has been posted in like five threads so far) suggests that they aren't quite as prosperous as ever. That is, in fact, the whole point of this news :P

In terms of operations no, but in terms of general wealth they are. Obviously they've got more competition and pressures than ever, and its more important that they have good results... they probably would have hoped for better than this, but I do wonder: why does this get posted in several threads like this when the Sony/MS results haven't? I'm not even sure they made the BBC either.

Nintendo's financial report doesn't cover every company owned by Nintendo. The report only covers sales of Nintendo branded products. So companies like The Pokemon Company aren't included. Also I'm pretty sure that Sony's report (the one showing the second quaterly loss) does include the whole company not just its games division.

BTW are you serious that they own The Seattle Mariners? I'm not from the U.S so I have no idea.

Yes, they own majority share. Purchased it from Yamauchi himself.

That's why everytime you see Mariners highlights, there's a DS ad somewhere on the screen (behind homeplate, on the outfield walls). Also is the explanation for the why they got Ken Griffey Jr. to back the baseball games put out by Nintendo (they didn't have a majority share back then, but had an interest, along with Yamauchi's share)
