Does that Amish Beard Balm add thickness or a product light hold post-shower, or is it simply for conditioning?

At the moment I use this AXE Tea Tree cream that I used to use in my hair for the beard. It's cheap, sold practically everywhere, smells good, and lessens the beard craziness.

It's just a balm/conditioner. There's no weight to it (my beard is only a half to 3/4 inch) but my hairs seem to sit down nicer after it's applied and I've run a comb through it.

Mine should be here today. Do you all use it every day, or every other day? I just need a small dab, right?

Also, do you guys use certain shampoo and conditioner in your hair and do you use it every day?

I shampoo everyday and use conditioner every few days.

GAF, I need beard help. Here's what I've been rocking for the past 6 months or so.

I'm constantly torn between trimming it slightly from what it is right now, to growing it out longer. I desperately am trying to achieve this look:
Kuc0wGC.jpg

Holy crap, that's me! I'd never wear 2 different flannel shirts as a fashion statement (and how many scarves does one man need?), but that's almost a doppelganger... but I'm sure if we were both shaved we'd look nothing alike, lol.

My beard is thicker in the chin area, and the sides only grow nice and full up to about the middle of my lip line, but I've learned that grooming is the key. Keep the chin hairs only as long as ones on your lower cheeks, trim your sideburns to mid-length range (not too long or they look wild), shave the cheeks anywhere above the area where they come in full, and trim only the wacky mustache hairs that go every which way uncontrollably.

But honestly, after that you have to just let it grow- past the uncomfortable 'homeless guy' stages into the full "civil war general' look. Despite the ridicule and strange stares you'll get, it's the only way. Obsessive trimming and keeping it looking sharp means it will take FOREVER to get a beard that length. Ignore the haters
and the mirror, your worst critic
and just go for it.

Also: Keep a picture of what you want your beard to look like as well as a small mirror in the bathroom; when you do have to trim it'll come in handy to have a reference. And daily beard oil/conditioner use really helps keep the unruly hairs under control, I use it every day and swear by jojoba oil. Having said that, if you can't find a good beard oil or don't want to drop the cash on something you may hate, check your local shops for ethnic hair care products. May seem strange, but coconut, jojoba, avocado, and other oils are the key ingredients in all of those products, just like beard conditioners. If the scent is a put-off (they're often girly), find the least smelly product you can and a nice bottle of a manly essential oil like oakmoss or black pepper. It'll make you smell like a man amongst men
(when used in moderation! Use even a drop too much and you smell like a freekin day spa)
.

[EDIT]
One more thing, try combing your mustache out from the center once it starts to grow in. You might be able train it a bit, which will help put it where you want it as grows out to the right length. Combing straight down just gets in the way, and is uncomfortable to boot.

INCOMING ASIAN BEARD ALERT

I know these are pretty damn rare but I wanted to try since I am mixed and happen to have my dads genes for facial hair I guess.. This is 5 weeks. Sides are a little light but the mustache/goatee/chin/neck area are really thick.

Any idea what to do with the wrangly short hairs that refuse to take any direction under my nose? They are going in every direction and I'm not sure if it is proper to trim under the nostrils or just let that all grow out.

I use Honest Amish heavy duty beard balm after a shower every day. I have experimented with Pomade/Forming Cream on the mustache but it seems to do absolutely nothing :X

Asian hair is really thick and can't be tamed. It's pretty annoying how nothing turns in on itself like a normal beard/mustache. The mustache is about 2 inches in length and it still seems to stick straight out. :\

I'm not asian, but I find if I wash my beard every day it gets unruly... are you shampooing every day? I rinse mine in the shower and immediately apply beard oil, but I only soapy wash it once per week (or as needed). Seems to help.

I was noticing that as well and bailed out of the washing/conditioning every day. I do it about once a week as well and just rinse then apply that Honest Amish Heavy Duty Beard Balm.

Ah. Gotcha.

Yeah, it looks neat. I'm looking more of a light hold to the beard. I think the American Crew forming cream works very well in that regard. It's not greasy, dries fast. Keeps my beard looking good into the next day.

Beyond that. I use the same shampoo and conditioner on hair and beard. I use that Paul Mitchell Tea Tree special, as I've always had a bit of flakes/eczema in the hair areas for years.

My wife bought my this beard balm online for Christmas. It's amazing. Smells great, and definitely helps straighten out my wirey beard hairs. I tried using some beard oil too that was okay but doesn't work nearly as good as this stuff.
This stuff is so good

Give Got2BGlued Spiking Glue a shot first. You can get it at most Walgreens or CVSs dirt cheap and it is SO much easier to work with.

Most of my handlebar stache friends have switched from any brand of wax.

Thanks, I'll check that out. Looks like it is pretty cheap, too. My beard oil does nothing for styling the stache, obviously. I've tried a pomade but wasn't thrilled with it.

I got a balm as a gift, but every time I use it by the end of the day my face sweat (?) mixed with the balm particles and basically makes my beard smell like vomit. So I tossed the balm.

Subbed to this thread, as I am not sure if I should feel ashamed or admire the rate at which my beard grows. At least in comparison to the rest of my family and friends. While I have yet to go longer than two weeks without a shave, I don't have a general impression as to the rate at which other peoples beards grow to know if this is fast, slow or in between. As a general impression, this is after one week, the phone gives the general impression that it's thicker than it is. I'll definitely consult this thread for tips when I have the courage to go past two weeks.

Takes sometime to let it grow though. I have my beard for a year now and will post a photo tomorrow how i have it now. I like to keep mine not super short but still dense it takes time to let it grow and it will ich in the first few weeks.

Hey let me know what you think.

I happened to be in the dollar store the other day, so I bought the generic ("compare to Got2BGlued") on the cheap. Seems to have a great hold, just have to be careful how much you use or it looks flaky when it dries. Thanks for the suggestion!

I don't recall the real stuff getting flaky, but if you can limit your amt and avoid it, you're good either way.

I've got a job interview coming up, and it's bumming me out, since I'm thinking I should probably shave before I go. I haven't shaved in years. I really don't want to do it.

I dont know how to put up with the derp look I will have while its growing in. Stache is nearly all blonde hair while the rest is brown dominant. So from any distance it looks like i dont have a stache.

Messed with it yesterday before shaving off a 4 day growth, mostly just practicing with neckline.

At some point it will have to rise to compensate for the head hair that is falling out.

Hi Beard GAF.
This is my first full try, always started but ended up shaving because it looked like shit, but now I went for it.
3.5 weeks so far.

Yay or nay?

Looks like you have more hair on the lower chin and neck which I'm assuming is because it isn't as full on your cheeks. The more trimmed, close beard looks best with much shorter hair imo. I have lighter colored facial hair so if I have medium length hair the beard tends to look washed out. It's not an accident that a lot if guys trying to highlight their facial hair tend to buzz the sides of their head.

Added a front pic, and yeah the chin is more dense, I always had that problem, but I think it can work if I trim the chin and let the sides grow more.
It's an experiment but I'd like to wear it for a while.
Thanks.
