First time I've ever grown a beard. So what do you think GAF, should I keep it or get rid of it?! Most people seem to approve:

If you've only just started keep growing!

If you've only just started keep growing!

I've been growing it for a few months now. It's gotten to the point now that I've been trimming it because it was getting too long and ugly.

The other day I was thinking of shaving it off, but I couldn't do it. I've formed a bond with it. :P

If you can, try and live with it through the untidy phase - it'll give you a lot more to work with and ultimately allow you to trim it to a fuller shape. That's if you want to grow it longer of course. :)

What he said.
It helps that mine grows in quite thick anyway, and I already look like a homeless bum.
You's seems to suit you, without looking like a serial killer.
Let it grow!

Thanks. Like I said, most people think it suites me. This one girl I work with really loves it! I'm 28 and without it I look like I'm about 16, so I'll definitely keep it.

I hate the remorse feeling when I shave off my beard. It's the worse. But the positive thing is that it always grows back quick. I'm so accustomed with hair on my face that without it just makes me look and feel weird.

I've always wanted to grow a beard, so I tried a couple years ago. I ended up getting massive amounts of folliculitis all over my beard area caused by staph not even two weeks into growing it. At one point I counted over 30 individual infections in my beard area. My dermatologist put me on antibiotics to clear it up, but it was so bad hard lumps were forming under my skin and stayed around for a couple months. I had spots of hair that wouldn't even grow hair anymore for a while, too.

Now I'm terrified of trying again. I can't really deal with that again. I did end up getting a massive bacteria paranoia from it, though.

which one?
Mr Bear Family, it's with boar hair.

Keep it, it looks good, you look good.

Soon as more pleasant weather comes in, I'm shaving mine.
Grow it again in the winter!
Mine doesn't bother me in summer, even in tropical places. If anything, I think it's keeping me cooler.

I had to shave my beard off due to getting most of it singed in a fire.

Things I have found:
1. The skin under my beard is perfectly clean. People would often say things like "I bet its all gross and pimply since you don't get to wash it directly". Apparently that's not true, I did wash my beard often though so that may play a role.

2. I don't feel any cooler without the beard. I was expecting to "Feel the wind on my face" etc, but really it's about the same.

3. I have a slight double chin. That wasn't there before I grew my beard out so uhh..guess I should start dieting again.

Anyways, I plan on taking a picture everyday as my beard grows back and compile it into a little gif. The first like 8 days are gonna look off as my face heals but otherwise should be a fun little project.

1) I just rub some Head and Shoulders in there when I'm washing my hair, I hope that does enough.

2)It certainly keeps the chill off my face, I've notice that this winter.

3)Heheh, growing a beard and dieting happened at the same time for me, I might look a bit haggard when I shave!

I'm defo doing a before and after when I do shave.

Yeah I washed my beard with shampoo and head and shoulders conditioner once a week. I rinsed with hot water everyday. Worked great for me!

Also, I live in Florida so that probably explains why it hadn't made a huge difference during the winter. I don't live by the ocean either so I don't even have a nice sea breeze.

I feel like a baby without my beard though. I already have a young face, so having no facial hair makes me look significantly younger.

My bro likes his beard, what are some good gift ideas or links for Christmas
For maintaining a beard, trimming, cremes, butters, any recommendations

Quick question about combs, I had the smaller version of this

But was having difficulty getting it through my hair unless it was quite wet.

So I bought this one
If I look at beard maintenance videos most guys seem to use that first one.

It's definitely easier to comb it with the wider tooth one I use now, though I still can't even use this after my beard has dried for awhile without pulling out hair. I brush it after combing.

Is there something I could do to make it easier to comb?

After washing, dry it with a brush and blow dryer, it'll become super soft and easier to comb.

I use a boars hair brush as well, it does work very well. I just tend to use the comb to get the oil or balm spread evenly through the hair.

So I started to grow a beard about 5 years ago after I had a surgery which meant I couldn't go out the first few weeks. Since then I've lost it and regrown it a few times, but the last few months I've kept it.

I'm ugly as fuck but the beard helps covering that up just a little bit ^^'

Now I'm planning to start something like beard oil or balm, my question is though, what would be the best option?

You're beautiful!

I've used balm and oil. I find oil smells stronger and tends to leave more of a shine but balm tends to keep the shape a bit better. If you use oil just use a few drops and really work it in. My beard is ... a bit longer than most in the thread at this point so I use a wire brush.

Number one product you should be using in your beard is shampoo and conditioner!!!

Not every day though right? I usually do it 1-2 times a week. When I do use it my hair doesn't feel quite as manageable or soft. Like I find I have to use balm on the days i use shampoo and conditioner just to get it close to shaped properly.

Every 3 days I put extra virgin olive oil in my beard. I just use an old tupperware container and dunk 2 fingers in and then apply. Rub all over beard and face and then wait 20 minutes and then take a shower. Those same 'every 3 days' I use just conditioner (most shampoo's dry my skin out really bad) but make sure I rinse out the olive oil first. Leave conditioner in for 2-3 minutes and rinse. Apply beard oil and shape/work beard oil into my skin with a boar bristle brush.

Thats how your beard wins at life.

Looks good to me!
Are you Scandinavian?
You look Scandinavian to me...

So BeardGAF, I have a silly question re: barber shops, and their beard trimming abilities.

Full disclaimer, I haven't been to a barber/hair dresser in over a decade as I shave my head, so I'm a bit out of the loop.

I normally trim my beard myself, and keep it fairly short using clippers. I'm in the process of growing my beard (about 8-9 weeks since last trim), and it's starting to get to the point where it needs a bit of TLC.

So I'm planning on going to a barber to ask for a trim and to help shape it - as I'm not confident in doing this myself. Do I take a photo along for inspiration?

Also bonus question, I've found recently that my beard sits really nice when I first wake in the morning, as a result of laying on it all night. However after showering etc, it is all wirey and sticks out in all directions - basically it's unmanageable. Are there any products or tricks that can help me maintain my post-wake beard?

So BeardGAF, I have a silly question re: barber shops, and their beard trimming abilities.

I've had a 2 different barbers have a go at mine. Both times they took out more than I was looking for (hair grows back though). I'll probably try again, but I'm letting it grow out quite a bit now so that hopefully it'll be easier to shape.

Beard oil/balm after your shower will help a lot in managing your beard. I would also suggest a boars hair brush like the guys a few posts above mentioned.

Edit:

Meant to ask Beard-GAF, I find the weakest part of my beard is my mustache. I'm just not sure what I can or should do with it. It doesn't come in super thick and I attempt to use mustache wax to comb it to the sides but the hair gets bent out of shape within like an hour or less.

Should I try a different wax, I find if I use more the hair feels way to heavy and stiff.

Edit2: here is a pic, this is after being at work all day, combed it a few times today but just doesn't seem to make it neat. Should I just let it try and grow more or trim it and stop trying to shape it out to the sides?

So I'm giving a beard an honest attempt for the first time in my life. I know a lot of people say no shaving for 4 weeks. I'm a little over 2 weeks and I'm hitting that apprehensive stage because I feel like it's way too patchy.

Yeah, keep at it. AT LEAST 4 weeks, I'd say more like 3 months - I honestly think 4 weeks is a useful milestone only if you're naturally hairy. For me I don't feel bearded until about 2 months, and not *really* happy with it until 4-5 months in.

Just over 5 months now and almost back to where I was last time I cut it. Never doing that again.

Keep at it. It'll fill out over time. 4 weeks is a magic number, mine took his sweet time before all the patchy parts are filled out.

So beard GAF, I am having second thoughts about my beard, any advices?

And anyone cold figure out the format of my face for me?

Past 25.

Beard is almost coming along for the first time. Still not quite there though, will need a few more months.

I can't have a mustache though, apparently. Shit just doesn't grow !
