Zane Lowe interview from Billboard

How will Apple Music work if you get all of the components to click?
What we’re working toward is this one place where people can go to [the] “For You” [feature] and be fed these wonderful handmade playlists according to their tastes, go to Beats 1 and have a shared listening experience and then go to “Connect” and get close to the artists. The whole thing should work symbiotically. Also, we’re a broadcasting platform on a music service, so when people hear something they like, the idea is they’ll go deep: go into the music service, learn more, listen to the albums. That’s really important.

Beats 1 was basically Trent Reznor's idea?
Yeah. I'm not sure if you've had a chance to sit with Trent, but he's one of the most intelligent, eloquent, passionate people I've ever met, not just for art, but also the way people can use it. He's really committed to the user experience, so his whole thing was like, "People have been splintered off into individual experiences -- let's see if we can bring them back together and if so, what would that feel like for the user? What if they're using it on a device in a music service, and not in the traditional places where radio is experienced?" It was incredibly useful for me to hear him say that because it really [solidified] some of the ideas that I'd been kicking around but wasn't sure if I was on the right path. What is really valuable and exciting about radio is the connection to a community. Trent has been incredibly supportive every step of the way.

Based Trent!

Kind of a cool interview to see what went on before Apple Music debuted and the plans for the future. They sure put Beats 1 together the quickest and it's by far the best part of the app.

I really like the different artists that create playlist. Josh Homme mostly has rock songs and WRTJ has hip-hop/rap/soul and stuff like that. It's very diverse and there's something for everyone. They've done a great job in getting all kinds of artists.

Now gimme that android app.

Apparently today will be the last Disclosure set. I didn't expect long term roles for the guest DJs.. But it makes me wonder how long the others will stick around for.

Hopefully Apple have more DJs lined up to fill the schedule.

This Abstract Radio 2-hour Michael Jackson party is giving me much-needed life right now. I do wish Q-Tip would ease up sometimes on the voiceovers and sound effects and just let the music & mix do the talking.

Uhh...I'm listening to WRTJ and they're playing their Close Your Eyes, and this is definitely the explicit version. F-bombs everywhere. Did Apple get rid of the clean-only requirement on Beats 1??

For the most part, I've noticed that when no clean version exists they do use the explicit version. RTJ does have a clean version in the wild so not sure why it wasn't used in that case.

Looks like the Major Lazer one is replacing Dr Dre.

Is Dre's show done?

Disclosure is normally in a similar time slot so I'm guessing they're replacing them (who had their last show a few weeks ago)

Beats 1 really needs to convert the on demand service into podcast form. It's annoying not having a play where left off feature.

At the very least they should set up an alert service that sends a message when a show is about to start

From this week's Popbitch newsletter:
Tidal might be the streaming service it's most fashionable to stick the boot into, but it might actually be time to have a go at Apple Music.

Beats1 was supposed to be the future of radio, wasn't it? It's not like Apple to stay quiet when they're onto a good thing, and yet they are being pretty secretive about their listening figures. As it's all streaming it should be easy to access accurate data.

Well, this could be the answer. Their posterboy signing, Zane Lowe – a man who commanded an audience of 3 million in his Radio One days – is rumoured to be drawing more like 25,000 listeners globally. Apple Music sources say Zane's ego, whichwas pretty much the size of Jupiter when he was in the UK, is not coping that well now he's not got his former pulling power.

I wonder how the ratings for the other shows compare if this turns out to be correct.

Yeah, I enjoy it too.

But it seems like when they wanted to create the future of radio... they made radio.

This is such a big part of it. Nothing wrong with the radio they've created, it follows in the vein of Radio 1's specialist output, some of the great stuff in Australia, with some brilliant minds... but it's just traditional radio. An industry I'd argue is currently coming up with more interesting reinventions of itself than Apple has so far. I've probably repeated myself in this thread about it, so, sorry if so.

It being traditional isn't necessarily a bad thing - radio as a medium is still fucking huge. But it's just so normal people forget. Like, 90% of the population of the UK tune in every week. Though much of it isn't stuff like Beats1. For however much mainstream stuff is repetitive, the bulk of people listen to Radio 2. They listen to local radio. That's where the mass audience is. Beats1 is supposed to be cool, it's always going to be niche.

So it was never going to be multi-million mass - but I don't think Apple's approach is helping. In the UK, online listening is around 7% of all listening hours the last time I checked. So again, you're going for a niche section of a niche market.

Radio is basically the easiest user interface there is. You turn it on and it entertains you. And you can press a button to change to something else if you're not liking it, but normally you'll settle on a regular station. Even going in to an app is more dedicated behaviour - finding it within that. And then listening on a computer, you have to listen through iTunes. Understandably from a strategy POV, they want you in Apple Music, but my job is doing web stuff for radio stations. Live players are usually the number 1 page of a site by considerable margins. Apps for traditional stations are mainly downloaded by the most dedicated listeners to a station - they're not really building a new audience, and I wonder if there's a similar issue there for Apple, it's not easy to sample and get in to. You have to make an effort.

In short, it's not innovative, it's not that easy to use (not even discussed listen again) and it's aimed at a niche, not mass audience.

They might create incredible radio - and god knows they've got the talent to do it - but it's not going to be a mass market station without a change of strategy.

It was/is an interesting idea, but I've all but stopped listening tbh. I don't care for most rap and I care even less for censored (clean versions) of songs. This made it hard to listen to for stretches. I find myself listening to Apple Music's curated playlists that are updated regularly (e.g. Best of the Week) as a way of discovering new music.

Anyone still listening to this? Some of the shows they have are pretty great, but I always forget about it and end up listening to my own stuff. I can't believe they still haven't improved some basic features..

No saved playback position, no offline mode, no notifications for upcoming shows etc. The notifications is the main problem. I don't wanna keep checking the Beats 1 tab everyday just to see when the next Frank Ocean set is.

I want to listen to shows but I hate iTunes with a passion so I don't even bother anymore.
