Why pretentious..maybe I don't understand the meaning in this context. I've heard this word regarding criticism this film a lot so..

Edit - bro fist at your initial paragraph
Hereditary was simple and ferocious. Zero fat in the narrative.

Midsommar for me was a lot of filler about a chick done with her dude. With some weird shit thrown in.

Yes. But how is that pretentious. Like oh hey look at me showing you this relationship drama etc? Just looked up some translated definitions and I don't know man.

More like he put to much focus on the inter personal relationship drama (with good context though).

It was already established so the climax of their drama could've been more subtle of left to the imagination.

But then again I'm dumb

I think Ari Aster rides a fine line between horror and comedy. Like with the mom in Hereditary swimming across the walls. A part of me wanted to laugh, but in the context, I still found it scary by putting myself in the son's shoes. And that scene you mention in Midsommar was horrifying to me but I can see why someone would react with laughter.

I'd really like to hear from him directly if it's an intentional balancing act that he's doing because I think there's something to it that makes his movies really effective
Agreed, I do believe he’s directly referred to Midsommar as a dark comedy, and I think he’s said something similar about inserting comedic elements in hereditary.

Here’s some quotes from an interview re: midsommar:

“I would say this was, for me, a way of making a breakup movie and having fun with clichés and tropes that are inherent to two different genres, doing something that’s simultaneously absurdist and nakedly vulnerable. It’s folk horror, but being given to you with the trajectory of a high-school comedy.”

“: I hope it’s wrenching and funny. And I hope you’re laughing at the end! Best-case scenario, you’re laughing at the end, and the laughs catch in your throat a little. You get so lost in the making of a film; I certainly will never be able to watch it with fresh eyes. So much of it is by the seat of your pants.”

Thanks, brudda. If absurdist and vulnerable was his target, I'd say he hit it!

Loved both Hereditary and Midsommar. Ari Aster has a very good eye for details, making repeat viewings so good, and I love that type of filmmaking. It's not about gore and cheap scares, instead he builds up tension with slow and creepy scenery, always hinting at some form of menace that lingers in the background. Aster has a nice visual flair too, especially in Midsommar, which is what distinguishes his work of horror from other contemporary directors, at least for me. He is definitely one of the most interesting film makers working today, one of the few who manage to produce thought provoking movies without underestimating his audience. I think Ari Aster is equal to that of Alex Garland, who also makes intelligent and cerebral cinema, something that is a rare commodity today in the movie industry. Looking forward to this new Ari Aster flick.

i really liked both midsommar and hereditary. ari aster is a great director but comedy and horror don't mix well for me so i don't know about this one

He is calling it a "nightmare comedy" or something

I'll watch it out of curiosity, but it looks like a Charles Kaufman movie.

I expect many people to be disapointed if they are going in blind. It'll be a divisive movie, I think.

Also, you cant go wrong with Phoenix. It will be entertaining regardless.

Although simultaneously disappointing and explanatory, in the end it's what he likes to do.
Ari Aster directing, and Joaquin Phoenix starring?

Man, I don't even want to watch a trailer, I already know I'll be watching this one.

Nah it was the other way around dummy

John Marston John Marston I think/know that what interests or resonates (neutral) with the viewer that's going to be the semi main focus.

I'm pretty drawn to the whole pagan cult psychedelic aspect so that was my point of interest with the relationship drama and slasher part filler.

Just got back from an advanced screening.

Wow... absolutely loved it. I think it's going to be a very divisive film, but I personally think it's his best yet. Phoenix was phenomenal as usual. Bumping my own thread here lol

Mild spoilers on the theme..

If we consider that Midsommar themes were grief, trust and escaping from a toxic relationship.. Hereditary was grief, loss and exploration of pure evil, Beau is an exploration of guilt, regret, and primal anxiety, mainly of our mortality. It's a masterclass of film making yet again

I was not expecting this to remind me so much of Hitchcock's original Psycho. It takes the mother/son relstionship to another level of what the fuckery. It's also intentionally hilarious in a dark humour way, just perfection.

Oh man, I’m very excited. I am curious, Hereditary and Midsommar were stories that were plenty blunt in the tone that “oh yeah, no one is getting a happy ending here”, but the trailer for Beau is Afraid gives me vibes that while there will be some horror, unsettling, and maybe mind fuck elements, this film might ultimately be more idealistic compared to his first two films. Don’t tell me the nature of the ending or such, I’m just curious when I see it which direction he’ll go.

Interesting you mention Psycho. I don’t think that‘s what you were implying, but I hope you didn’t give away that Beau is a murderer! :messenger_grinning_sweat: For me, the trailer reminded me of Darren Aronofsky‘s Black Swan, what with the implication of an abusive mother and not being sure of what’s real or not, though again I feel the film might be more idealistic than Black Swan (at least my interpretation of it, the movie is such a mindfuck that there are quite a few theories about what actually happened).

One thing you can let me know, how much is Richard Kind in the film? I hadn’t seen him in anything in forever (I did love Inside Out and his performance of Bing Bong, but obviously that was just his voice), so it was cool when he appeared in the trailer, dude was mad funny on the show Spin City, I watched that so much back in the day.

there is very little I can say - it would spoil it. I was more referring to the relationship that Beau has with an overbearing religious fanatic type mother and literally makes him fear ejaculation for his life. lol. And all the shit that brings for a man...

Finally watched it now that it's available on digital.
Well, that's gonna need multiple viewings!!

But I enjoyed the ride, it's like "The world according to Garp" had a baby with "Jacob's Ladder" 😃

I really liked this. The first act and the third were much better than the second, but as a whole it's like David Lynch and Wes Anderson decided to collaborate and make something so memorable, hilarious, depressing and just awesome. Very under-rated.

Honestly that movie is hot shit.

It's basically scrotie-mcboogerballs and just like the episode of South park everyone is dying to try find meaning in it hahaha.

What a movie. From reading people's impressions I thought it was going to be an incoherent, indecipherable mess, but boy is this movie funny or what. Honestly think it's Ari Asters best so far.

The movie is fucking shite. I hope his next movie is back to horror. Stick to what you're good at.

Ari Aster wished he had Anderson's or Lynch's talent! And that's coming from someone who liked Midsommar and kinda liked Hereditary.

This movie though, no thanks. The director was obviously surrounded with yes men so no one ever said, maybe change this or rather do it so-and-so. I feel someone else should at least write his movies.

Also there's so many red herrings and confusingly unimportant sequences that all meaning got lost in the end.

I watched the first half and kind of lost interest. I like Joaquin. I like Aster’s previous movies. I’m a big fan of Lynch so this should’ve been a home run but it didn’t grab me. Anyway if anyone wants to see this Lynch done right Inland Empire just got a remaster. That’s a fuckin movie.

Imho I think he is good at tragedy/comedy and not so much horror. I really like Hereditary but it's horror elements are pretty run of the mill.

Hereditary wasn't scary at all. It was unintentionally funny though. I prefer Midsummer though. Not sure if I'm going to watch Beau Is Afraid.
