Being a Parent really changes gaming...

So, my kids are 9 and 7, and man, so many things in gaming just hit different now. The Last of Us came out a few years before my first, and at the time, yeah it was sad, but replaying it after having kids....tears me up.

I started replaying The Walking Dead Telltale games. I've had the collection in my backlog forever, mainly because it's 4 games in one and I've played them all. However, cleaning up my backlog, finally replaying them. I'll straight up warn you now, SPOILERS AHEAD. I'm not putting spoiler tags on a 13 year old game.

YOU'RE WARNED.

In Episode 3, when Duck gets bitten, and you finally convince Kenny that something needs to be done, it tore me up. I can't even imagine what that would be like, having to decide the fate of my child in that situation. Logic seems easy, but when it comes down to it, it's so easy to understand why Katjaa couldn't and killed herself. Granted, if I was going that route, I would definitely make sure my child wouldn't turn before I did the deed, but geez, it actually brought me to tears.

Well done, TellTale.

Yes of course. Same with Taken as well. Then again I had a child in high-school so this stuff has always affected me most of my life.

Jk, i have a 2yo baby girl and my wife usually says that i don't have much emotions or empathy for this kind of stuff, it must be a really really sad thing like in Grave of the Fireflies to fuck me up emotionally.

This are the only two times i remember to tearing up with mídia.

Empathy for video game characters? It's unusual for me to feel anything for movie or TV characters, I don't think video games have ever done that to me.

I don't have kids, but if I did, I could see how that would make the "dad" moments in games more powerful. When I play Dad of War or TLOU, I know the writer is trying to tap into my love for children. Since I don't have kids, I don't feel the emotional punch that the writer is going for. If the writing is good, I might feel some sympathy, but I don't get the same impact as I would if I had kids. Give me a story about a dog dying, though, and I'm a blubbering mess, lol.

So running in the opposite direction to the mission objective in the division so you can chase a dog down and shoot it isn't something you'd do?

I fucking hate kids 🤷‍♂️

I care the least about what happens to children in movies, shows, or games. Just fuck off with trying to make me emotionally invested in it

The responses make me wonder if some of you could use a therapy session lol holy shit.

As a parent to kids- can agree. That scene in TLOU at the start fucks me up. The end of Plague Tale 2? Same thing.

Hell- the dog dying at the start of GoWR had me in tears.

In all fairness- having kids has woken up the emotional side of me. Its weird and can’t explain it.

I'm childless with two dogs, I can relate with the switch. Stuff like Marley & Me wouldn't phase me before and is unwatchable for me now...

I supposed it's akin to finding religion: you can't go back. And it doesn't make sense to whomever it hasn't happened to yet.

I reckon having something living depend on you and accepting oblivion in death are the two gateways into adulthood.

Good for you.

I don't have kids but there are a large number of co-op games by Nintendo and Hazelight(to name a few) that allow one to play with a less experienced person and still have a great time all around. Enjoy!

Thought the thread would be about not having enough time to mess around with gaming. And then everyone says buy a Steam Deck. Mildly surprised by the unintentional twist here.

Unrelated but the ending of MGS4 hits like a truck if you played the games in release order and the years they were released because you yourself are older and Solid Snake is almost someone that grew up with you. (I am talking about that Otacon scene)
