I can't really tolerate that level of production.

This is ingame graphics of a video game in 2016 for fuck sake :

:/
Making all of the animations, voices, and modeling for that one char is probably a good 1/4 of the budget this anime has.

I'll echo thoughts that the sound design is particularly jarring which I think does a disservice to the music they're using to score the series.

The art style being what it is brings with it that stiffness often associated with CG which I expected from the low production budget, but I was kind of hoping that the overall direction and frame composition would make up for that.

Unfortunately I found many of the scenes to just look dull and uninspired (save for the close ups on Guts' face which do look great) which gave off a flat perfunctory feeling to the episode.

of, not good. Looks aside the biggest disappointment for me was the music-just terrible. OP is particularly awful.

Lol did they mix parts of 4 different arcs in this episode? That was a bit weird.

My reaction

That was hot garbage. Terrible animation, terrible direction, bad artwork, Sagisu forgot he wasn't working on Evangelion (and when he remembered he used some grungy metal). And holy shit at the adaptation. We got bits of the first episode of Volume 1 , the entire episode 2 (80-90 pags) and then volume 14 (at least 2 more episodes) completely destroying the possibility of seeing Jill's rescue . The entrance of the Holy Iron Chain Knights is wasted in a couple of seconds. I expected bad. I didn't expected something this bad.

The only good thing I can think of is the Hai yo from Susumu.

Yeah I can't do it. I got to the skeletons and I just fucking lost it, burst out laughing hard.

They look like the Army of Darkness skeletons. I guess I should skip to the ED.

Also Guts looks really skinny.

This is pretty insulting to the Army of Darkness skeletons.

I can't believe it was even worse than I anticipated.

Few times in my life I've witnessed a piece this badly cut ; music is off and all over the place, it's framed like someone who liked reading the manga but never took a directing class, it really feels like one of those poor AMV from the early youtube days.

I still don't understand why the CG, everything looks so ugly and empty.

Here's hoping it gets better along the way...

Can't wait for the full version of that Hirasawa song.
Also the scenery CG is great. Those are some great 3D trees!

Dragonslayer hits sound like they're mixed by Lars Ulrich.

This was terrible, I don't know why I keep holding out hope for a proper Berserk anime adaptation because it's clearly never going to happen.

The art is shit, the animation is worse, nonsensical story continuity and even aside from that the pacing itself is horrible. Oh yeah, and the sound design and music? Come on.

You can't blame the budget for what is simply poor direction.

Is it Crunchyroll doing the censoring, or is that from the original Japanese broadcast?

Crunchyroll streams whatever is provided to them by the Japanese companies they work with. They do not make any further edits or censorship on videos themselves.

The characters are like complete cardboard because of that shitty animation. They have no expressions. Collette is much more affectionate over Guts (and she even plays with Puck). So is her dad, being in complete awe with what was happening. Holy shit they just trample over all that shit. Guts striking her and going crazy after. What the fuck man. What the fuck are you even doin. Why? Tell me why

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Hold up. What if they do puppets for the next Berserk adaptation? mitebcool

One of my dream projects is if Laika, the studio behind Coraline, Paranorman, Kubo and the Two Strings were to do a mature TV show with a big budget that was all stop motion puppetry version of Berserk. You wouldn't have to worry about actors outside of voice acting, you could make super incredibly detailed models and use CGI to cover for other elements that are harder to recreate. Seriously, imagine how good it would be. Just get Netflix or HBO to do it!

Maybe this is just an elaborate hommage to Hidetaka Miyazaki -- thanking him for the Souls serie by using the classic PS1 King's Field graphics

That might be the only way to emulate Miura's detail.

Just imagine these kinds of models in motion with all the details you'd love from the manga but with the kinetic motion of film. Throw a great soundtrack on top of that, film it in a clear but consistent and dramatic fashion and BOOM! You have an incredible Berserk series.

I expect that in the next episode Guts
kills the entire Holy Iron Chain Knights, cause they sure as hell ain't match to him. Unless he had been fighting against an Apostle and was barely conscious. Luckily he didn't

As my introduction to the series I didn't think it was that bad.

I'm going to assume the manga and original anime are much better though.

Oh good god stop watching this. You are going to ruin the series. At least go back and watch the 3 movies or the original anime. You are literally missing like the first quarter of the story and jumping in now, quality aside, is a bad idea as a lot of things are not going to make sense.

You should watch the '97 anime. Everyone should. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to read the manga after that.

Jesus christ at all the hyperbole in this thread

Solid first episode, animation was a bit uneven here and there (those fucking trees), but overall I enjoyed it way more than I expected after reading some of these comments here

Dude was talking about how good it looked, not how it was put together. The budget is to blame for the former, the latter is all on the director

The director is ultimately responsible for all the aesthetic choices in the show. Even if there isn't a large budget it is possible to make something look great through smart decisions. (It's also possible for something with a large budget to look awful due to bad decisions.) It all comes down to making good use of the resources you have.

There's hyperbole, and then there's having standards.

What the heck at them making Casca even lighter (again). Really pathetic.. The fuck is with that seriously? The first episode was absolutely horrid. I question the taste of anyone that enjoyed it

Woah don't make this your entry into the series. Plus it also spoils the biggest twists in the manga

I don't see how people can critize the story fumbles in this new amime but praise the '97 anime, which differed heavily from the manga.

I too miss the 90's artstyle for sure, but even that was a budget project. While I still prefer the score from the 90's anime, how can ANYONE say that the opening isn't the cheesiest, most out of place song in the series. It's charming now, but showing that anyone for the first time is jarring.

But I enjoyed this new one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And Berserk '97 is a masterpiece.

Forgive me, the actual criticism wasn't for you. It's for people who are coming down so hard on this while looking at the 97' anime. And while I understand that that was over 20 years ago, I still enjoyed it.

Just saw the first episode. Not surprised at the quality of CGI animation considering these changes between teaser trailers:

But holy crap did Colette, Adolf, the skeletons and that tree look like shit. I've seen PS1 games with better use of 3-d models. Someone really needs to go and fix this stiffness. Which is disappointing because there is actually a lot here to like.
That scene at the start with Schierke and Flora was actually a pretty good combination of the styles they were going for. If the whole thing was like that I'd be fine with it. Puck emoted well enough as well. Additionally, the times traditional animation showed up it complimented what was happening well (Guts straight up swallowing that rabbit and such). I actually liked the change in pacing considering what we know about the story for this season (although I'm definitely going to miss Snake Baron, Count and Lost Children sections).
I'm conflicted on that OP though. Song is fine, it just seems to betray expectations. All that animation they show is just wasted and gives the wrong impression of what's to come. And what's with the shot of CGI Guts swinging at literally nothing?
We'll see how the rest of the anime turns out since I know I'm going to watch the rest of it anyway. Gotta watch Berserk. Not the best of starts so far.

No matter what superfans of manga series seem to think, an adaptation that is different from its source is not automatically bad. If all you want is the manga in color with voices, well, that's a highly unambitious goal which is of questionable value.

The 1997 OP is great. I'm in the midst of watching that show for the first time, and I think the OP is perfectly fitting for the kind of series Berserk is and the kind of character Guts is.
