Holy crap that was not great. For every good background or piece of animation there were 10 dumpster fire 3D animation trash bits. Their was no pacing to speak off with scenes not being allowed to breath before speeding on to the next scene. No atmosphere or tension

Voices were fine and I loved the sound his sword makes but why does it look like Guts was struggling to wield it? He's so skinny and it looked like he was just swinging it around but not in the ferocious way he murders things in the manga.

Music was all over the place but I did like the opening song and the preview music.

I hope it improves as I need this to be good. The movies animation improved over time so hopefully this will too.

I don't see how people can critize the story fumbles in this new amime but praise the '97 anime, which differed heavily from the manga.

I too miss the 90's artstyle for sure, but even that was a budget project. While I still prefer the score from the 90's anime, how can ANYONE say that the opening isn't the cheesiest, most out of place song in the series. It's charming now, but showing that anyone for the first time is jarring.

I don't really understand why people say that the old anime differs heavily or skips a lot of content. Most of what it skips is rather inconsequential to the central plot, barring a couple of scenes, but even those aren't a big deal. I recently watched that anime without having read the manga and then read the whole golden age arc in the manga (since people said the anime cuts out so much things) only to find out that I really wasn't missing much - some nice fights sure, but nothing much that would really add to the central story of the arc.

Meanwhile, this new anime just jams in a bunch of scenes from different arcs without a coherent narrative (some of them I can understand, but what the tree scene was doing here I really don't know). This sort of storytelling probably won't continue, but it's still worth pointing out.

Also, the opening was still charming (and awesome) when I first saw it last year. As long as you don't take it too seriously.

Watching shit from polygon pictures prepared me for the cgi awfulness but nothing could ever prepare me for how bad the sound design is.

The music is godawful and out of place, the sfx equally as bad, and then to top it all off there is a distinct lack of rage in guts' voice.

How could a group of what i assume is intelligent people approve that music

Erm... yeah, not sure what to make of that. I enjoyed it, because it's Berserk, but the budget is clearly very, very low on this. I guess I'll wait and see where it's at in a couple more episodes before really passing judgement.

It's mostly a well directed, well paced show. That's why people like it even though it has differences to the manga and the movement in the animation is rudimentary.

Or maybe there are unrealistic expectations despite knowing about who was working on it, what it will look like and that Berserk in general is difficult to adopt without a huge budget

Because they are talentless we shouldn't criticize their lack of talent? What?

I had very little expectations for this, but does that mean I can't say it's awful? People should be allowed to dislike things, even if all signs pointed towards said things being bad. Aside from that, people who knew nothing beforehand should be made aware of just how bad the first episode was.

It doesn't work.

This ugly ass animation ruins the whole thing. There is absolutely zero atmosphere. There are fractions where it actually looks good, like that shot in the OP where they show all characters or a few close ups here and there, but outside of those seconds it's pure garbage.

Puck is also terrible. I absolutely hate the voice. Not at all how I pictured it.

The only good thing here was that Forces-esque song at the very end.

Just watched! This was great. The CGI isn't as awful as I imagined it would be. I do especially like the hand-drawn intro and some bits in the episode itself.

I can't wait for episode 2! Farnese!

This was terrible, I don't know why I keep holding out hope for a proper Berserk anime adaptation because it's clearly never going to happen.

I'm not sure if you meant 'a good non-Golden Age adaptation', but I've always been a fan of the original TV series. Those high-quality art stills that it often uses combined with its soundtrack is effective at bringing Miura's work to life on the screen imo. I mean, sometimes they feel kinda cheap (as in, forced) but I still think they're used pretty well on the whole.

/shrug. I personally didn't see a problem with the animation style in the movies, and really don't see a huge issue here either. Yea, there was a couple of weird seconds like the picture of Collete already shown. The brief glimpse of Femto looked ugly.

OP was trash, and 1 terrible metal song. The rest of the music was good. I liked the ED.

I enjoyed it, glad to have a new Berserk anime. It's probably a blessing that I haven't read the manga at this point.

A quality product isn't unrealistic.
This wasn't.

People aren't asking for the world here.

Missing out on one of the best manga ever and watching this trash instead can hardly be considered a blessing.

If people have read it and are okay with whatever this here is, fair enough, opinions be opinions, but this is definitely not how your first experience should be. That much is clear now (and no, I'm not a "manga is always better" guy, quite the opposite actually)

Seems worthwhile to criticize the lack of talent of talentless people, lmao

You can absolutey dislike things, but you can either a) look at the facts of the whole project and try to be constructive or b) have your dream Berserk anime in mind and throw a tantrum because this obviously isn't it

It's not unrealisitc but difficult to pull off when what you have to work with is not a lot

I don't care about Berserk but I'm just popping in to say that 9mm Parabellum Bullet doing the OP song is 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Dope song.

Berserk has a huge following. I like the CGI from the mini series they did but what they did here was badly put.

Dont get me wrong, the story itself was awesome but then they have to add rock music and bad cgi. Come one son, do better for a series as acclaimed as Berserk.

oh god, I was sort of optimistic, I found the movies enjoyable and the CGI not completely distracting, but this..this just looks like a couple of amateur fans produced it.... yeah, I doubt I'll be continuing with it. Such a shame.

I thought it was... OK. Man the pace was crazy though. And not in a good way. Obviously the animation suffered a whole bunch from the crappy CG and poor framerate too.

That said, I liked some of the scenes. Directing was hit and miss imo. I liked the scene with the voices in Guts' head for instance. I liked the music too, except for that vocal piece when Guts was dreaming, that seemed a bit too much. I look forward to more straightforward adaptations of what follows.
I expect that in the next episode Guts
kills the entire Holy Iron Chain Knights, cause they sure as hell ain't match to him. Unless he had been fighting against an Apostle and was barely conscious. Luckily he didn't
Yeah, that seems really strange. I mean, it wouldn't fit with the manga at all but having the tree injure him woulda been an easy fix, but it doesn't seem to deal much damage at all.

Bleh just watched this. Where to even begin. The CG animation is the least of this adaptation's problems. Which speaking of, am I crazy or does the Musou game look visually better than this anime? Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaCyHxcZSxQ Not only does it look more accurate to the manga, but is just visually more pleasing to me. Maybe I'm crazy.

But yeah, the continuity for the anime was all over the place.

The worst part is that this guy composed the fucking Neon Genesis Evangelion soundtrack. And he's still doing kickass music in the Evangelion Rebuild movies.

It should be quite a simple job for Sagisu but in the movies he went with a completely bland and forgettable orchestral score and here he goes for incredibly stupid guitars.

I don't care about Berserk but I'm just popping in to say that 9mm Parabellum Bullet doing the OP song is
Dope song.

It's definitely growing on me.

Terrible CG , The atmosphere was off and the sound design is a mess. So damn disappointing.

I thought Puck was handled fairly well considering how fucking fast everything moved. Will have to get used to that voice though as I always heard something more male.

Oh yikes, I came back for the reactions and yep, its a good idea to stay away from this until I read the manga however I watched the OP and ED and they were good, obviously they are 2D so I haven't been exposed to the garbage (except like 3 seconds from the OP).... but have you guys seen this?

Berserk (2016) Opening *Fixed*

lol that was fast.

Might do an edit myself if the show gets better (like the song in the OP just fine tho, could see it growing on me).

Man wut....

You guys remember some of the worst parts of the movies? I mean the movies had a lot of beautiful 2D stuff in it and most of it was fine but when the 3D reared its ugly hell on the extra characters who were off to the side and not zoomed in...

That's the ENTIRETY of this episode! And they streaked everything with lines to make it look like shading but it just looks like awful.

You would think that with CG at least the movement would be fluid but not it's still choppy and feels like the anime is running at 10FPS.

Lack of atmosphere and sound design fell flat. When he was slicing up the skeleton it felt like metal clanging metal... what the hell man.

Worst offense is the soundtrack. The only good tracks were lifted STRAIGHT from the movies and then remixed with metal grunge. The original music is all garbage metal grunge that starts when Gutts is slicing people.

Disappointing but I will still be watching it of course because it's god damn Berserk. Man when is a studio going to give Berserk its due respect and dedication.

P.S.: Caska is definitely white washed. You know that iconic scene of when Gutts is holding her in the forest and they are both naked? In that scene Gutts was always seen to be more light skinned than Caska (even in the movies) but in this scene I couldn't tell the difference in skin tone!

This looks much worse in the actual episode shockingly and the side characters look like that in 90% of the frames.

Only thing that looks good is when they are fully zoomed in on Gutts' face.

Only seen the OP so far (out on Canada Day), but I love the shots they used for it. So many iconic moments that just really let you feel the weight of Guts' burden.

As for the CGI, I liked Knights of Sidonia and Ajin, and think Polygon Pictures is a fine studio. So I'll probably be more 'okay' than some of you who are dying lol

I'm on halfway through the episode but I just wanna say that all close ups of faces should be burnt and thrown in the trash. Why are they even doing these close ups, they are horrendous and ugly as fuck.

I'm intrigued to see how bad it can be, though I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I don't expect perfection, but hope to see competency that respects the source material.

I actually had to use region changing to watch on Crunchyroll since it's blocked, so maybe AnimeLab will have it (Australian)?

Well, I didn't hate that first episode overall.

I did, however, hate the music. Who thought that style was a good idea for Berserk?
