Cry cry cry, yet the first ones stealing it off the internet when a new episode shows up.

This post is great.

You aren't for the show. You aren't against it. We don't even know if you watched it. Or if you even have any expectations for that matter.

You aren't making any assertions. You aren't defending the show against any claims being made. You aren't talking to anyone in particular and you didn't even bother to address the show itself.

You just come in here complaining about people's reactions and accuse everyone who watched it of stealing.

And then you leave.

Anyway it was okay. Why they decided to mash up random chapters from the first 18 or so volumes together in an intro episode is strange but it makes sense. I can see the connective tissue between those dots.

It wasn't as bad as I was expecting but it wasn't good either. Sound design writing, and a lot of the visual direction isn't great but honestly I feel like this was better than the first episode of the 1997 series which means I still may look favorably by the end of this run yet. And who knows maybe a Jojo can happen here that over time budget/ quality increases so I'm crossing my fingers. Either way I'm in for the long haul for better or worse. At least it isn't a crucified smoldering corpse of a show I couldn't bring myself to continue so that's already in a more positive direction than I was fearing. It was clunky but it served it's purpose and if the writing/ directing takes a more sensible direction moving forward I think it will be okay.

Even if it's not perfect, it's better than nothing.

eclipses are fun!

That's not fair. Shitty tweens in fast motion shots are forgivable as long as the keys are fine and they were okay, okay?

This was just painful to watch. On so many levels. I can only sum up my criticism with 'terribly directed'. Bad cuts, inconsistent style, ill advised liberties taken with the story, it just goes on and on. It's like they went 'quick, we need something to promote the new chapters on no budget'.

there are a lot of better ways to shit on the anime than taking stupid stills that no one notices while you're watching

There's also people shitting on the show based on what a HBO funded Berserk animated by Madhouse could have been.

Considering I'm one of the few people here who seemed to actually not have an aneurysm watching the first episode I'm gonna say I have the liberty to post funny inbetween frames.

Well, that first episode was certainly a mixed bag! As someone who decided to finally give Berserk a try after Koei-Tecmo announced Berserk Musou - I've become a huge fan in a short period of time. I think I saw the first CG Berserk movie forever ago, but I don't remember anything about it. Last week I started reading the Berserk manga right from Vol.1, Chapter 1. Currently I'm in the middle of Vol. 18 & coincidentally also on the 18th episode of the original '97 anime series as well.
This Inquisitor dude Mozgus is HORRIFIC

So, knowing what I know about the story, seeing how they mixed the different arcs together in this first episode was a little jarring - I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. Introducing the Holy Iron Chain Knights this early seems like a mistake. I was sorta hoping this series was going to be a more straight run-through of the Black Swordsman Arc, but I guess not. The music is terrible - besides the one 'Forces'-sounding song at the end, the animation is VERY hit & miss, and the sound design for Guts' sword is MEH. I'm definitely going to keep watching as I want to see what they'll adapt in the future, but yeah.

Man, I wish Berserk could get the Hunter x Hunter treatment & get a nice traditionally animated series that adheres mostly to the manga structure and would just run-through the entire series until they run out of chapters to adapt.

Between this thread and /a/ I thought this was supposed to be utter shit.

It wasn't that bad. The animation bothered me a lot less than I thought it would.

I do like all the close ups of Guts, just not the ones showing his face directly. All these face close ups look dumb as hell. I mean, if you wanna work with cheap CG, at least don't try to show its terrible side like that. They should stick to bigger shots showing more of the environment.

Missing out on one of the best manga ever and watching this trash instead can hardly be considered a blessing.

If people have read it and are okay with whatever this here is, fair enough, opinions be opinions, but this is definitely not how your first experience should be. That much is clear now (and no, I'm not a "manga is always better" guy, quite the opposite actually)

I'd say it is a blessing. A lot of people seem bitter about this adaptation, one way or the other. It's something I don't really have to deal with. I think the series/movies are pretty satisfactory. I'm also pretty happy getting a new continuation, and I didn't think it was bad /shrug.

I've read the manga up to where the original anime ends, and stopped there, so what I said before wasn't entirely true. It was years ago, but I guess my opinion is validated now :p It'll be a long shot for me to read it at this point. I told myself I would hop on it many times now, but never followed up.

From what I understand, the essence and themes are still nicely represented in the anime, and movies. This may be hard to believe from someone who calls Berserk a top 3 GOAT anime, but I enjoy the movies more than the original anime series/manga. Details/characters/plots missing and all.

I mean it wasn't great but I don't think it was a total dumpster fire either. Compared to the Ajin movies this isn't utterly horrible. There's definitely parts of the CG that make me wince a little bit but it isn't like that the whole entire time.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

Just pointing out that the anime series/movies and this new series probably don't even cover half the Berserk storyline and I'm not even talking about the edits they made to the arcs they do cover.

I'd also point out that the movies don't cover the themes/details of the manga as they excise huge parts of the characters backstories, etc. Not too mention the movies still cut out fucking Wyald.

As did the anime, right? That part alone was worth reading it even though I had watched the anime and the movies beforehand.

What the hell did I just watch?

Terrible art and terrible pacing. What was the point in mixing different parts of the story?

And then they had to make Casca look even worse than she did in the movies.

I didn't expect it to be this bad.

My biggest surprise is how they just miss Guts features. In the opening and in the big majority of the episode. How the hell nobody had the nerve to point that the protagonist looks completely fucked up? There's probably two times where he is clearly well drawn. 1 in the opening and 1 in the end of the episode.

The animation wasn't too bad except for that old man and girl. I guess minor characters will continue to look like shit throughout this series. Guts, Puk and what we saw of Farnese look pretty good though. Overall, I kinda liked it, I guess I'm just happy to see them finally move on to the Conviction arc.

Why the hell can David Pro give us a Jojo anime that while cheap is pitch perfect to the source material. While Berserk get's one hot mess after another?

The material is extreme and no one probably feels it is "large" enough to support a full scale decent quality high budget anime adaption.

So people aren't liking this, eh?

Is the original anime held in high regard? I loved it in spite of it kinda looking like shit most of the time.

Watched it. Thought it was really good. Not surprised the internet hates it though

The OP was decidedly not good for getting me into it, but the snipped at the preview theme was as it should be---big decline from the original score/theme from even the movies though. Was the OP actually Susumu Hirasawa's work or did he just do that extreme end bit and some minor background themes throughout?

Otherwise....I still reckon it has a fair shot and I make ample allowances given the long and bizarre transmedia road that Berserk has trodden upon all these years now.

Could still totally go for a JoJo/Hunter X Hunter/Legend of Galactic Heroes comprehensive rendition of it though~ I guess this one will get a better chunk done on margin than, say, Guin Saga did---but who even knows what the future holds from there...

Just the small bit of music in the preview.

I thought it was good but it's ugly as sin, so I'm also surprised people don't like it. This could be great without the horrendous 3D models and animations but I guess we'll never get that.

[edit]

Isidro's model is especially bad, when he's running is almost looks like when the Avatar's fucked up on stage during E3.

I agree. Hand drawn animation would look way better. Some of the CG animations did impress me, though, and I'd take this over nothing any day of the week.

The cgi at least let's them use it in more creative ways to facilitate some nice shots. It can look really rough at time, but overall, I'm more surprised than hateful towards it.

Well about halfway through the episode and... yeah its not great. I was of the opinion I was just glad to get a new Berserk anime but at this point I'm feeling like I did when I read the final couple of Dune books written by Frank Herberts son after he died. Yeah I could have lived without this honestly. I hope the following episodes are better and didn't mind parts of it but yeah there were a lot of choices all around that don't make any sense.

I wonder how much of a say Miura has on any of this as Casca being fucking white is weird man, not a fan at all.

Mediocre as fuck first episode. If you don't have the budget for great animation, get creative like the 97 series, half the time I never noticed nothing was moving because of the angles and direction. Sigh.

Still sad we aren't getting the Guardians of Desire storyline. It's great, and really adds a lot into the world and fleshes out the Apostles. That arc is underrated as hell.

I really wanted to like this so I tried going in with low expectations but MY GOD. Every character moves and walks like an Autobot slowly walking under water. There are brief flashes of it looking good, but that doesn't make up for 95% of the rest.

That bar scene is just laughable. When the music kicked in, I didn't even know how to process it, its so bad. I'd kill for just the 97 animation style at this point.

To say nothing of the rushed plot, there wasn't one second to breath throughout the whole thing. I'll give it another episode or two but that's about it.

so I just watched it and that was better than I expected it to be, you guys still have completely unrealistic expectations of this series.

Yikes that was some really rough CG...
I thought it was entertaining for what it was and I'll keep watching it because it's Berserk, but eeshh...

my expectations were for it to look more appealing than the cheap ass 90s anime, couldn't even reach that bar.

reminds me of Kingdom when they kept doing that terrible 3D until they finally got the message and switched to all 2D.

I don't think wanting it to look decent, have good atmosphere and be well paced is an unrealistic expectation. Especially for something with the Berserk name.
