You gotta give respect to this DMB/Phish cover of Gin and Juice.

uh, Stevie Ray Vaughn- Voodoo Child
my buddy likes the No Quarter cover that Tool did of Led Zeplin.
Aerosmith did a sweet cover of Come Together by the Beatles, too.

Bjorkestra

Most covers Mr. Bungle do live

Cap'n Jazz- Take On Me

Lovage- Sex (I'm A)

Fantomas Director's Cut album

UMASS Front Percussion Ensemble - Paranoid Android (this is good stuff)

Outkast- My Favorite Things (I really do love to listen to this rendition)

Tool- No Quarter

Bjork- Oh So Quiet

I also appreciate a lot of the covers from that one String Quartet that does the Nine Inch Nails, Tool, and Radiohead stuff.

I really like Vanessa Carlton's version of Paint It Black. And I'm going to get hate for this I'm sure, but I also like Limp Bizkit's version of Behind Blue Eyes *ducks*.

I'm not sure if this one counts, but I very very much prefer the version of Dave Matthews Band - When the World Ends on the Matrix Reloaded soundtrack to the original.

John Mayer - Message in a Bottle (probably blasphemy)

Metallica - Whiskey in a Jar

Ben Harper - Superstition

RHCP - Higher Ground (But, I still like the original more)

The Revolting Cocks - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy (Rod Stewart)
Ministry - Lay Lady Lay (Bob Dylan) ... Ministry improved this song 10000 fold

Society and badabing should be ashamed of themselves. I am a fan of GnR but they massacred Knockin' On Heaven's Door.
I must have been drunk. I like the original Last Kiss as well.

i love the string quartet stuff. although the first tool quartet cd is much better than the second one, imo

Probably not something you guys have ever heard of, but the best coversongs I've ever heard are made by a group called Come Shine. Strike that, the best music, period. They only do covers, as a matter of fact, and they're by far my favourite group. Björk, Radiohead, Massive Attack, Miles Davis and all the rest of my favs pale into insignificance next to Come Shine's treatment of old, tired evergreens you probably hate.

Think you've heard My Funny Valentine, Over The Rainbow, Nature Boy or September Song? You haven't if you haven't heard Come Shine's versions. They make every other version dull, tired and pointless. And it's that way with ALL their songs, not just a couple. Everything they touch turn into a masterpiece. But why do I bother? It's not like any of you will hunt down their stuff, anyway... but for those of you who might want to nonetheless, you can buy and download all three albums (two regular and one excellent live-album) here: http://www.curlinglegs.no/index.php?action=artistbrowser&artist=Come Shine

I'm sorry if I seem a bit stupid, but I really love this music. Really.

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Johnny Cash - One
Gary Jules & Michael Andrews - Mad World
Guns N' Roses - Knockin' On Heaven's Door (I notice that this inevitably ends up in virtually every Best Cover and Worst Cover thread. Go figure.)
Soft Cell - Tainted Love

Cash has done some great covers.

Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus
Matthew Good - Enjoy The Silence
Marilyn Manson - Down In The Park
SchĂĽssler DĂĽ - True Faith

Dream Theater's cover/medley of Led Zeppelin's The Rover, Achilles' Last Stand and The Song Remains the Same. Seriously, even if you hate DT, you should check this shit out. It's just awesome.

Rockapella- Sweet Child of mine

Yes yes YES! I was hoping that SOMEONE in this thread would know of Rockapella. ALL of their covers kick large ammounts of ass. I like most of them more than the originals. Their version of Here Comes the Sun is just....wow, so good.

In fact, they are so good, I can listen to their Christmas music year-round. They even covered "It's A Small World" and it ROCKS.

Rockapella is my favorite group ever. I can't wait for their next album. Hopefully a studio version of Pappa Was A Rolling Stone will be on it. *fingers crossed*

Less than Jake- I think I Love you (Patrtridge Family)
Bratmobile- Where Eagles Dare (Misfits)
NOFX- Vincent (Don McClean)
No Use for a Name- Ballad of NYC (Pogues)

And I', proud to love 311's cover of Love Song

ehh.. not the best, but I REALLY enjoyed Rob Zombie on Children of the Grave from Nativity in Black.

Whooo.

If you like Rockapella, there are two songs that need mentioning...

Off the Beat [Penn U]- Lean on Me
The Trenchcoats- I Can See Clearly

Nothing new in this list:

nine inch nails, "Metal"
Social Distortion, "Ring of Fire"
Johnny Cash, "Hurt"
The Prodigy, "Phoenix" (Nirvana's "Love Buzz")

The Vandals - Don't Stop Me Now (Queen)

Seriously one of the best covers I've ever heard. Everyone should track down that song now.

The Vandals have done some great covers:

Supercalifragilistic and Kokomo immediately spring to mind
