Best lines in gaming?

KCD2.

By pressing F5 in Microprose Formula One Grand Prix you could activate the ideal line which was pretty much perfect.

Doesn't get better than that.

'We appreciate you mowing the lawn but...' - air traffic control in Flight Unlimited 2 when you fail to keep the airplane on the taxiway/runway.

Context:

In God of War 2005 inside Pandora's Temple and during the Challenge of Poseidon Kratos comes to an impassable door at the far end of a small room, blocking his progress. On the door is a graven image of Poseidon and a riddle carved into the door: "Sacrifice the ultimate to continue your quest." In the same room is this:

The absolute despair and hopelessness in this moment, and the events the immediately follow it, left a huge mark on me. I am not exaggerating when I say I experienced a shift in my taste in entertainment when I played this.

MGS4:

The way Snake brushes off the things he has done in the past, it almost implies a sense of regret about the way his life has unfolded, even though he could not have lived it any other way. He was a caged bird from birth, and this line expresses that he did not care that his cage was shinier than other's or that his singing voice was praised.

He expresses a similar feeling when he says to Raiden: "You still have your youth. Don't waste it. You can start over."

I love MGS4, it has awesome scenes. It just has some others that are insufferable like Johnny/Meryl stuff.

Baldur's Gate 2 : "I cannot be caged. I cannot be controlled. Understand this as you die, ever pathetic, ever fools!"

Tales of Symphonia: "Farewell, my shadow, you who stand at the end of the path I chose not to follow."

Order of Ecclesia: "Hear me, Dracula! I am the morning sun, come to vanquish this horrible night!"

Warhammer 40k Darktide: "BLOOD FOR THE EMPEROR! SKULLS FOR THE GOLDEN THRONE!" (and they wonder why we're basically a penal legion...)

There's some if my absolute favourites lines here already, Jill Sandwich being one of them. My absolute favourite line from a game however isn't even intelligible, but cracks me up evertim. From Toshinden 2:

Grandia 2 had some great ones.

"I'm sorry, were you waiting for me to give a damn?"

"Well well. Look what the slavish devotion to sanctimonious bloodshed dragged in. What brings you here - or did I answer myself?"

"Now you mock me."
"No, I've been mocking you for the last half hour. A little slow to notice, aren't we?"

"What is this "purify" thing? For some reason, I doubt those knights are packing soap and bubble bath in that armour."
"... She means to kill them. I remember one city that was burnt to the ground by the Cathedral Knights."
"... That's some strong bubble bath."

My favourite line from Darkest Dungeon:

"Success so clearly in view. Or is it merely... a trick of the light?"

It's all in the delivery, the narrator lets a tiny bit of confusion and alarm into his gruff, gloomy voice.

I'll throw in some Deus Ex series quotes:

Deus Ex 1
  • "You mechs may have copper wiring to reroute your fear of pain, but I've got nerves of steel." - JC Denton (could be Duke Nukem though)
  • "The Individual desires judgment. Without that desire, the cohesion of groups is impossible, and so is civilization." - Morpheus
Invisible War
  • "All free societies have started with one premise: human nature is cruel, unjust -- a force to be controlled." - JC Denton
  • "The commodification of ability -- tuition, of course, but, increasingly, genetic treatments, cybernetic protocols, now biomods -- has had the side effect of creating a self-perpetuating aristocracy in all advanced societies. When ability becomes a public resource, what will distinguish people will be what they do with it. Intention. Dedication. Integrity. The qualities we would choose as the bedrock of the social order." - Paul Denton
Human Revolution
  • "Technology offers us strength. Strength enables dominance, and dominance paves the way for abuse." - Adam Jensen
  • "How often have we changed the dream of progress, only to see that dream perverted? More often than not, haven't the machines we built to improve life shattered the lives of millions?" - Adam Jensen

No need to go any farther than this game right here for the best lines in gaming, of course.

Edit: I am satisfied that it made it to the first page of the thread, though.

I don't get this, is this some child-level "lesbians are men" "humour", surely there's more to it than that?
No. Neil would never. Critics hailed it the most powerful line of the show and groundbreaking. Very little chance at this point that the PS6 versions of TLOU are using the traditional Ellie model. Between the current gender status of the person she was based on and the widespread adoration of the HBO Original Show, it's a no brainer.
