PS3 is the awesome. The plastic actually looks exclusive.

....
So, you are saying Sony scored an exclusive polymer blend for its next console?!

.c.o.n.s.o.l.e.s..... handheld-consoles -------- It's really not too hard to comprehend, and yes many have had some of the best looking industrial-design among products in generall.
there's no such thing as a handheld console.

With portables it's more matter of combination of style and functionality then just style... GBA SP is the best so far, the screen stays protected and the system is small and stylish. GB Micro is also pretty good. PSP looks great, but it's not very functional design. DS is functional, but just ok looking.

Uh-huh :lol What does functionality have to do wtih this thread?

I have to say the Revolution/Whatthehellever looks very nice with that minimalistic design. It's not intrusive, the blue light line is nice, and the clear coat really sets it off. It's the only system that jumps out at me in a unique manner.

1. The white Revolution (that is seriously slick)
2. The white PSTwo (wish they'd release it stateside)
3. The 360 (never in a million years did I think MS could make anything so stylish)

When you see the Revolution next to the PS3/XBox 360, you'll realize how much better it looks because of its size as well.

It'll be like seeing an i-Pod nano next to a regular i-Pod, the regular i-Pod looks clumsy and bulky in comparision.

My faves ...

1.) PSP (black)

2.) Revolution (black)

3.) N64 ... Just really like the "curvy sports car" look and the cool detachable power source. The Ultra 64 one was much better looking than the "more Japanese" final model they settled on with the grey controller/green logo (meh).

4.) PSOne ... So compact and cute.

5.) PSTwo ... Very slim, minimal.

I'm sorry. It's impossible to think ANYTHING but the PSP is the best looking handheld ever. I'll give the GBA Micro points for sleekness and the GBASP points for practicality and functionality, but the PSP wins hands down by looks.

Absolutely no contest.

PSP is fucking UGLY. Great screen FUGLY design. It's like one of those American cars of the 90s where there's all these curves that go NOWHERE. BLEH BLEH BLEH.

However, I'm willing to note that I'll be in the far minority here. But christ on a stick, is it ever UGLY from a design standpoint.

i agree with you 100%

Revolution and PSP are tied for my favorite of all time, although I don't really like the "puke green" color rev. The white and black are hot, though.

Well basically, if the design is not functional, then it starts to look silly when you look at it a bit longer. Like PSP, it looks pretty good in pictures at first, but when you think about throwing it into your pocket with you cell phone and keys or whatever, you realize that it's just style over substance, and not a very good desing. The screen would get raped in minutes.

That's what the pouch is for.

I agree that the PSP is more form over function ---- Each time I look at mine, it sticks out how noisy the machine is.... you don't need 2 buttons for volume, just a hidden slidey bar --- that way you can actually mute the bitch when you turn it on to take a crap in a public restroom....

Scrow, handhelds are consoles ---- get over it --- Like i said, if Yoshi's Island is a great SNES console-game, why is it no longer a great GBA console-game???

The N64 is so fucking ugly as shit... I mean it was cool-looking when i was in middle-school ---- but those curves are entirely useless .... has anyone ever had need to put their N64 into a wind-tunnel to test its velocity??

as far as good ID "form following function" goes --- the RevO has really kicked it up a notch.... sure it may look like other products (like a router), but does it need to look any different? It's pretty much covering any function a router would for its games.

I'm still partial to the original Sega Genesis.....not the bland, steril, "Jolly Rancher" redesign of it though (or was that a Halls cough drop?). The Atari 5200 was pretty cool for its time. The original Playstation was always simple but effective.

As for the next gen boxes, the Revolution love confuses me. It so heavily apes the original PS2 that it's not funny at all IMO. Sure, it manages to do it without looking exactly like it, but all the principle ideas are there (Black, blue light, stands up, squared off.) At least Microsoft managed to rip off the standing up-right thing without copying everything else.

And for all the talk of grills and refrigerators (however I do think the PS3 looks more like a fridge than a grill, or maybe a soda machine), not many seem to notice that the 360 looks like some mini-air purifier. Now that's Sharper image if I ever saw it. All three have something questionable about them.

I undertand your point but I think its irrelevant in a thread about the "best looking console ever" If this was a thread about functionality and ergonomics I would agree with you.

Three words: interchangeable colored overlays.

Come on people, that wrinkly depraved stare doesn't lie!

But seriously, my list of consoles turned out to look like this:

Sega Master System - threateningly ugly black plastic crap
NES - gray toylike plastic crap
Sega Genesis Mark 1 - black plastic crap (the "discus" kinda-sorta saves it)
SNES - gray toylike plastic crap, even more ungainly than the NES (but with cute purple buttons!)
PS1 Mark 1 - gray toylike plastic crap
Nintendo 64 - hideous overNURBed plastic crap
Dreamcast - gray toylike plastic crap
PS2 - featureless unmemorable black plastic crap
XBox - featureless unmemorable black plastic crap
GameCube - multihued toylike plastic crap, but with dimensions and styling that scream "erectile dysfunction"

Notice a trend here? I guess they could have been covered in lichen and dogpoo, as long as the games were good. But can't we have Porsche or somebody design a "special edition" console, one that doesn't look like a cross between a Fisher-Price toy and an Onkyo CD player? I mean, talk about easy bling-bling money.

So my choices would be the first two iterations of the Atari VCS. No-BS, but not invisible. And that reset switch made a satisfying *thunk* when you slammed it 15000 times after getting killed by some inhuman cheap-ass automaton that had, like, a byte of AI code tops.

Best reset switch ever.

Always been a fan of this one:

Also I'll second the GBA SP and Revolution. I also love the slimline PS2.

i'm disappointed in gaf...

Looks like you missed my earlier post... Oh shit, it's not showing up now, but anyways there was a SFC pic there :D

I really don't see what is so sexy about the PS3.

WOW LOOK THEY MADE IT SHINY.

That's more like it. This thread just didn't feel right without the trolls marginalizing the opinions they didn't agree with.

Here, I'll help you start that fire.

Revolution looks like a console for women. It's so small, bright, and womanly. But I suppose that's a step up from the flaming GC lunchbox, lolz, rofl rofl.

*Awaits 30 pages of Nintendo crap.*

Seriously, I'd say either PS3, N64, Dreamcast.

I'm a big fan of the PS3. I'd be an even bigger fan of the 360 if it wasn't damn concave.

Otherwise, I like the MkII Genny and Goldstar 3DO.

As far as portables go, nothing comes close to the PSP, closely followed by the NGPC.
