Best Metal Slugs

Just started playing my first Metal Slug (Metal Slug Advance), and i'm absolutely luvin' it. I'd sure like to get started in playing the rest of the series. If any of you can be so kindly, please list the best to worst in the series.

I think Metal Slug Advance is one of the best, actually. Metal Slug 3, X, and the the original are near the top (probably in that order). 2 follows. I have yet to play 4 or 5, but people on here say they're not as good. As for the NGPC games, they're fun but different.

If you want something similar to Metal Slug Advance, you should definetly check out Metal Slug First and Second Mission for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. They use the same health system as MSA. Second Mission is one of my favorite MS games. The newest MS game I played was 5 which was handled by a different studio IIRC and though it plays like a MS game, it just doesn't "feel" like one.

Metal Slug 5 feels kinda like the first one, but the art is definately lacking. I'd put it right above MS4.

By the way, I hate the slide. I couldn't tell you how many times I meant to jump -> fire down and accidently slid to my death.
I agree. The slide does get quite irritating. The crouch walk seems slowed down as well. I hate the new Metal Slug as well. It walks normally, and then if you want it to roll, you have to get it to rest down and then roll forward. What's with the melee on the Metal Slug as well?

I was just wondering....what was the point of the cards in Metal Slug Advance. I found several, but they don't seem to be of any use. Also, that last battle is hard as hell.

I haven't played it enough to really get into the card system, but from what I can tell, first, they're collectibles. Second, I think item ones, like foods, have immediate effects. As for the weapon power-up ones, I couldn't tell if they were just relevant per level or if you could turn them on or off somehow. But they do have instant results. Like the Shotgun + makes your shotgun more effective.

I luv the Metal Slug series!

That being said, Metal Slug is by far my favorite. Metal Slug 3 is just so much fun to play, it is so over the top. 2 and X are awesome too...

Now, Metal Slug 4 and 5 are horrible. By far the worst of the series...no where close to the greatness of Metal Slug 3.

NeoGeo Pocket also had 2 Metal Slugs...they were pretty fun too.

I just saw Metal Slug 3 for the X-Box the other day. Would you guys highly recommend buying it? $40 iz a bit steep for a five level game, then again, it iz becoming rare ain't it?

It isn't, considering I paid 475$ for the Neo Geo version.... while I already had the Xbox version.

I bought it used at Gamestop for 25 bucks. It was in excellent condition, as I would imagine. I think anyone who is going to shell out $40 for an old 2D game will keep it in good condition.

I bought a great looking used copy for $25. I would have paid $40 easily. Wonderful. The GBA game is fantastic, but 3 is amazing.

My copy for Metal Slug 3 arrived yesterday for my Xbox, I have played a bit of 1 & 2 but 3 is the first I have been able to sink my teeth into. ItÂ’s an absolute blast one of my mates is coming around to day for a few beers and a killer MS3 session. Defiantly a superb pick up and play game.

Andy ItÂ’s only half price in PAL areas so if your Xbox is region free you could import from Asia maybe Europe, if not itÂ’s still worth the money the only problem is now I need to buy two arcade sticks (also for Street Fighter AC)!!!

Also whatÂ’s the deal with people not being able to continue in the US version? In my PAL version you start with 9 continues.

Honestly, they're best if you play them in order. A lot of the best moments in Metal Slug 3 don't have the same impact if you haven't beaten the previous games.

Play 1 first
2 is optional
X is an enhanced version of 2
then 3

I'll agree with this. You will definetly notice some similarities as far as characters go. It helps tie you into the world much more.

Just play Metal Slug 3 and X.

Nothing else is as good as those two, and even X barely makes it onto my list because it's so damn frentic.

I dunno, maybe they're all good but I've been so spoiled my MS3 that I always come away from the others a little dissapointed.

I agree with everything this man said. MS1 is still the best, great level design, pure POV-saving, Nazi-obliterating, asskicking goodness.

[Metal Slug 3] Those 5 levels are really, really long, too.
Well, four of them aren't, just the last one. The last level is longer than the other four put together.

The last level takes me over forty minutes; which is why I cried bullshit so hard when the EGM reviewer claimed the game could easily be beaten in under an hour. That fucker didn't beat shit.

Which version did they say that about? Because if it was Xbox that is extremely ridiculous. How could anyone "easily" beat MS3 without continues in any amount of time?

The long-ass fifth stage of MS3 was awesome the first time through, but it makes the game a little more of a chore to beat than the others. That's mainly why I still play X more often.

01] metal slug 2
02] metal slug
03] metal slug 5
04] metal slug 3
05] metal slug advance (nice idea with the health bar)

999] metal slug 4 (worst game in teh metal slug series, glad that they changed the team for the fifth back to the original people)

not counting metal slug x, because its only some best of of ep 1 and 2.

Now, Metal Slug 4 and 5 are horrible. By far the worst of the series...no where close to the greatness of Metal Slug 3

no, the fifth one is great! even the music is the best in the series. now go and play it again.

What is all this no continue nonsense?

Like I said I get 9 continues when I start.

First off, you ranked 5 above 3...WRONG!

Second, I beat 5 the day it came out in Japan...I will give you that it is way better than MS4, but it can't even touch MS3. In fact, it shouldn't eve be mentioned in the same sentence!

Two quick questions:

1) There isn't a health bar in any of the other Metal Slugs (besides Advance)?
2) Iz there a turbo-fire option in Metal Slug 3 X-Box?

1) There is only when you man some of the vehicles. Otherwise, it's shoot or be shot.
2) No idea.

na, i dont think so. metal slug 3 is only in the first two levels great, than the enemy design is just boring and dull. the final boss is the biggest disappointment in the game too. metal slug 3 is overrated in my opinion.

1) Only a few different vehicles
2) Not that I am aware of, I will double check for you.

Keep in mind that MSA is closer to the NG Pocket games: Metal Slug First Mission and Second Misson, or whatever. There are health bars in those games.

Also MSA ain't real good, in case you were wondering.

Metal Slugs are boring games.
The only fun thing in MS3 is that fat mini game, where you have to get fat in order to pass a stage.. it's so short though... but very fun.

:lol

Well, it's not *exactly* the original people.. they're spread out between Dimps, Sammy and Noise Factory now. Here's the Metal Slug developers by game.

Nazca (former IREM staff)
-Metal Slug (NeoGeo)

SNK (absorbed Nazca)
-Metal Slug 2 (NeoGeo)
-Metal Slug X (NeoGeo)
-Metal Slug: 1st Mission (NGPC)
-Metal Slug 3 (NeoGeo)
-Metal Slug: 2nd Mission (NGPC)

Mega Corperation (Korean team hired by Playmore)
-Metal Slug 4 (NeoGeo)
-Metal Slug World (PS2)

Noise Factory (ex-SNK staff, part of SNK Playmore)
-Metal Slug 5 (NeoGeo)
-Metal Slug Advance (GBA)
-Metal Slug 6 (Atomiswave)

I think MSA iz a superb gba game. Since I haven't played any of the other games in the series, i can't really give an honest opinion if its a stinker in the series.

That collecting card thing in the game iz very fun and addictive. It basically makes you strive to beat a level without dying. If you can't beat it, come back later when you've gotten some more power-ups (aka the cards).

One more question: How many lives do you get per continue in MS3?

3 lives per continue.

In the PAL game you get 9 Credits/Continues however it seems you get none in the US version.

Maybe Monk or someone else can confirm this?

The main problem is that a continue sets you back all the way to the start of the level rather than let you continue from where you at. That's virtually unacceptable considering how brutal the last stage is.

Well they fixed the for the PAL version, you start from where you died.

1) How long iz an average level in MS3?
2) How long iz the last stage in relation to the previous stages?
3) Playing through the last stage sounds like a gauntlet. Does playing co-op alleviate the difficulty of the last stage?
4) Again, iz there a turbo-fire option?

Why do you think so? It's one of the better GBA games I've played lately, IMO.
It just didn't light my fire. Metal Slug, 3 in particular, has been notable for always lighting my damn fire.

Misc things I didn't appreciate.
- Short levels
- More platform type sections
- Levels that are split into rooms
- Fighting the one army enemy 95% of the time (they were nearly a minority in 3)
- Playing on a GBA with a D-pad and holding down an auto-fire
- The auto-fire wasting a special weapon shot every time I knife a guy.

It wasn't a bad game, but WTF took so long? The animation is heavily downgraded and the mission design (all 5 of em) is pretty basic.

Soooo, you're saying it's time for me to get a modded Xbox?

What color iz Marco's vest?
Gotta assume your talking Xbox version here.

1) Levels take about 5-7 minutes once you know how to go through them.
2) Over 40 minutes long, and probably harder than most anything you've ever played.
3) You're partner better be as good as you are, because the boss life definitely gets increased.
4) Don't remember. You only need it when you're stuck with the pistol anyway. Practice and that'll happen a lot less.

This last level kinda scares me. Can you earn extra lives in the game?
Playing on a GBA with a D-pad and holding down an auto-fire
Well, you do hav to use yer pistol alot in the game, so the auto-fire was a generous option (especially since the vehicular enemies can take a butt load of shots).
