Not a level, but I loved it when it rained in the SNES version of Harvest Moon.

Very atmospheric considering the game and hardware.
Oh, absolutely. It has to work with so little but nails our primitive fascination with nature. It's easily the best game on the system.

Persona 4 - Rainy days

Loved how there would be no music on rainy days. Just the sound of the rain drops. Created a great atmosphere especially because of how rain was tied in to the story.

Gears of War. It's the only levels I go back and play. They were amazing considering when they were released.

Other rain levels are cool, but when I read the thread title I instantly thought of Gears. I'm not even a very big Gears fan.

Tallon Overworld from Metroid Prime.

After the introduction sequence, seeing the droplets of water run down Samus' visor is really incredible.

The best part of the storms in RDR aren't just the effects but the build, and just how LONG they are. That vid is 9 minutes, but if it showed 5-10 minutes beforehand, the sky would looked very much like it would before a storm in real life. It's gray and moody, and unless you save to advance time, you can expect 15-20 minutes of weather like that through the storm, and afterwards with puddles on the ground. Those are the type of details that most games with day/night/weather cycles don't pay attention to.

Link to the Past is the most memorable for me - it did a really great job of setting the tone of the game and the entire intro felt like an ascension from darkness. When you get outside for the first time after the sewers, and the storm has stopped, the world looks so bright and vibrant. So good.

Also, here some pics at Games Rader about The evolution of rain

This blew so many people away at that E3 - looked so "next gen" at the time.

The only rain level that made me feel as if I was in a storm is Hard Rain in L4D2.

Everything else is just normal levels with rain particle effects.

I really liked how the ambient sounds pop out more when it is raining.

One of my all time fav rain maps.

Rain makes for the most atmospheric multiplayer enviroments.

Rain + Ripples in a lake and ill buy it no matter what game.

Timeshift had some nice rain and the time mechanics where great with it

Uncharted 2 has amazing rain fx. Of course there is MGS2 which was jaw dropping back in the PS2 days. RDR weather fx are great as well.

Gotta vote for Roller Coaster Tycoon. It's a pretty sublime experience to see all your guests pop out their umbrellas when the rain comes.

Sound design is probably the most memorable aspect of big contemporary games. The visuals are quickly outdated, the music is bland and the gameplay disposable -- but the sound design is often incredibly thoughtful and filigreed.

I love it when it rains in Twilight Princess and Wind Waker-the music completely stops threr.Absolutely atmospheric.
Tallon overworld in Metroid Prime,too.

The night time rain section in Resident Evil 4 is still great looking today.
It was especially effective because it brought you back to the first location you visited, changed so much by the darkness and lit only by lightning. The first time I played it, not really knowing what sort of game it was going to turn out to be, it absolutely shit me up: I was expecting something awful to come barrelling at me out of the rain.

Yeah, though what really annoyed me was you couldn't do certain social links when it rained. A bit of rain never hurt any body! Just the fog...

I'll agree on Yakuza 4 and Left 4 Dead 2 - Hard Rain. With Yakuza 4, I just loved how it looked on the ground when it was raining. Hard Rain on the other hand, it was incorporated into the gameplay exceptionally well.

To me, the great parts about rain levels is how well the ambience of rain is conveyed. I thought Red Dead Redemption is an example of this:

The same could be said of Witcher 2:

Hard Rain from L4D2 is the most realistic feeling one I've ever played. When the rain and wind kicks up and you cant hear or see anything including the other characters. Area you just passed through being flooded on the way back.

I just wish that when the rain kicks up it would actually affect the voice com communication too.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II had some great rain effects on Kamino, as well as a fantastic presentation overall. However, when it comes to the overall game... what the hell happened? Such wasted potential.

Heavy rain - ethan house 2years later ( with jason inside ).

Nice level , where you just have to take care of jason properly ( or not )
VERY GOOD LEVEL IMO

ALSO , MGS2 TANKER OPENING ( simply awesome )

third pick : Uncharted 2 Chapter 25 - part 2 .
